I know lots of you guys out there collect model airplanes. Me too! So what planes do you have. Post pictures as well. Here are mine. The last ones are sort of toys, the kind you get at an airport gift shop. The rest are at my Gemini Jets 1:400 scale airport.

Nice collection. Ya gotta love the 380!! I bought that Qantas model today. The LanChile 340 is a nice model. You need an AirCanada 777. Do you have the complete Gemini airport.

Yup, I do have the whole airport, but I only have room for 2 out of the 3 terminal sections. The AC 777 is at the top of my wish list.

Have you thought about adding the runway mats. The 380 really looks sharp with the runway. I will post a few of mine later today, gotta take some pictures first!!!

I have the 787 model you have. I love that model. Not a bad price either. I have slowed down on the Gemini Jets collecting. They are pumping out too many for my wallet anymore. They are by far a great company. I am watching their new 1/200 series. They look nice. I noticed a Republic DC-9 that needs to join my collection.

I have reverted back to building them. I have found the love again in building my own.

In my view, you can't go wrong with Gemini Jets or Phoenix. Not sure if they have the models you're after, but have a browse on their website.

Currently I have A lot of herpa's and they're all 1:500.

I am a totally noob with model airplanes and I don't know what kind of companies and stuff there are. I was wondering if some of you guys could recommend some companies and a good scale( like I said I only have 1:500 so don't know if the others are good or not) to get at not too bad of a price. Also maybe a good place to get them. My dream is to maybe have a full model airport some day. Thanks

BTW, currently I have:

AF 380
EY 380
AA 772
JL 772
AF 773
QF 744
JL 762
LH 343

What a good scale is will depend on how much room you have to store them, and how much detail you want on your model. For me, 1:400 is the perfect size - not too small, but not too big either, and there is sufficient detail on a 1:400 scale with which I'm happy. I also have one 1:500 scale Herpa, but I find that they are a bit small. I notice that you also have a 737 in 1:500, but that would be so small that some detail might get missed.

Admittedly, I wouldn't know which model manufactures make good 1:500 scale models, as I only buy 1:400. Of the 1:400 scale manufacturers, I'd rate Phoenix Models as the best.

Fantastic collection, and I like the cabinet!

I collect mainly kit aircraft in scales of 1:144 or larger, I've got a huge number of these waiting until I'm bored and need something to do. I hardly ever build them out of the box as I only model those exact planes I've flown on, and TBH I've never actually completed one, as several are still awaiting printed decals:

1:72:

Airfix F27 - Channel Express

Revel B747-400 - Lufthansa ... to become KLM

Zvezda Tu154M - Aeroflot
Welsh Models Tu154M - Syrian Arab Airways ... to become AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines
Doyusha YS-11 - ANA ... to become Asian Spirit

There's a whole bunch more than those, I'm considering selling some as I'm never going to have time to make them all... but I just keep buying more!  silly  I'll try and get around to posting some pictures of my other non kit models soon.

The 3 units are from IKEA. It would be better if they had an extra shelf, as I'm out of space.

The sign on the top says 'No metal objects to be carried in this compartment'. It is from a derelict Vickers Viscount - it was attached to a compartment door in the cabin.

Interesting!  Smile I've tried sitting on the very last row on board a Delta 767-300ER and I remember the weird feeling when the aircraft turned on ground. Maybe not as noticable as an A346 but still a lot.

Loving the cabinet!

I have about 150 GJ/AC/Phoenix - mainly 1/400s but I've just started getting into the 1/200's.

The GJ 1/200 BA Tristar 500 is a beauty and have just added the 1st Choice 1/200 XL Airways 737-900ER which is great!

Also have an Open Skies 752, U2 A319, Iberia A320, MON A321 and FlyBe Dash 8 Q400 on the 1/200 side - problem is I'm running out of space!

In the UK I can reccomend the following:

- Aviation Retail Direct
- Classic Aero Models
- Airspotters

Sometimes it works out cheaper to buy from the US and have them shipped over. There are some good retailers therewhich I have used:

- EZ Toys
- Air Paradigm (but they don't stock Aeroclassics)
- Adam Jets

What is also noticeable is that Gemini seems to have an issue with their 747 No 1 engines taking off before the rest of the plane does. I have a Gemini Jets QF 744ER with exactly the same fault.

Your photo does, however, show just how much better looking the 747 is compared to the A380. I was quite surprised by the size difference, though. The A380 seems to make the 747 look tiny in comparison.

Pete, try Triking Model Cars on Hay Street or City Models (Piccadilly Arcade) in Perth. They are the ones I go to whenever I buy models. Perth Hobby Centre (Murray Street) also has a smallish collection of mainly Gemini Jets, while City Models have stacks of Phoenix and Gemini. Triking is also good but sometimes they're a bit slow to get new releases. Last time I was at City Models about a month ago they still had the GJ QF A380 there.

I like Gemini & Phoenix models the best as well. I do have an Aviation 400 SU 321 and it's well made as well. My least favorite are DragonWings. I know they have the removable landing gears for a purpose but I don't remove & find them to be very flimsy. The wings on the Dragon's are plastic reducing the wait of the diecast model and some say it helps the model look more authentic.

I've done a lot of research on the best prices and sites to buy from. Personally, I've found Jetway Models to have some of the best prices and simple efficent service.

As UK_Dispatcher mentions, it also seems Air Paradigm has some great prices too. He also does sales and mark downs I've noticed. The guy who own's it seems to be a bit testy at times from the way he writes but I don't know first hand. I'm leary of that sometimes as I have a tendency to ask questions if I'm unclear about something or want to compare as to which maker does a certain model better.

It does payoff big time in the long run to do your research as some model websites are remarkably more expensive than their competitors.

There are a couple of websites for those who are very interested in diecast model collecting where that's all they talk about, future releases, which model of a 320 is better from Gemini than Jet-X etc.. I've found them to be very informative and the members willing to help answer your questions. The sites I know of are:

www.wings900.com

I've been meaning to take some pics of my models and will work on that soon and post. I'm starting to run out of space so until I'm able to buy a glass case, I guess I can rotate, lol.

Not at all, I believe I saw them at IKEA for maybe $59.99 or $69.99, it even has a light at the top, I thought about getting one but the only thing is there are no extra shelves, so that put my models out. I got a BILLY bookcase (post 52), glass shelves, and four led lights, glass doors and wooden doors on the bottom. The whole thing is probably about $300. However I had to drill my own holes to fit that many shelves, as my collection grew I was forced to add shelf after shelf. IKEA is a cheap way for displaying models nicely.

You all have such amazing collections of aircraft models. I have a few Concordes but due to all my recent movings they are all put away in boxes. I am still on the look out for a very/most accurate diecast Singapore Airlines / BA dual livery Concorde, that is G-BOAD. Not too big. What or where would you all recommend that I look to find it?

I received a Singapore 380 model for the first anniversary of flights last year (and my birthday) that was a gift from SQ. I have 3 others from the SQ 380s inaugural flights goodie bags to SYD LHR and NRT so I do not see how I will use this one. I will have to take pictures and post them and see if anyone is interested then I might be willing to sell it or even better trade for a good Concorde diecast model.

Nice one Jack. It seems that no one builds kits anymore. Personally, I wish you'd have gone with the TWA livery. Do you remember if it was a red tail or global TWA livery?

Here's one that I built back in 1989. It's coming apart but you'll never find this Revell kit again. When I bought it, the box showed a National Airlines livery.
Back then,    National Airlines christened their ships with a womans name, supposedly an FA. This one was "Barbara". "Hi I'm Barbara. Fly me to Miami" the commercials would say. Instead, this UAL decal set was inclosed.
Strangely, the first piece to fall off was the #1 engine. I'm still waiting for a #2 turbine blade to separate.

It would be interesting to know how each company decides on which models to make? It does seem like Phoenix does mostly Asian airlines and a European carrier here and there.

I got them at the LAX memorabilia show. They are 1:400 scale and quite detailed. I don't believe they where handed out by PA, as they don't have promotional boxes. They are great models... I got the second one accidentally. I was in a hurry, and the plane was in it's plastic box on top of the normal box. I bought it and left, without putting it into it's box. I got home, and when I was going to put the plastic back in the box, I found the second inside! The seller must have forgotten about the one inside the box. I got it for free... I went back the next year to see if I could find the guy, but I did not see him. I 'have no need for two models, I hope to tradeone someday for one model i'd like

Just now getting into collecting 1:400 scale aircraft. Looking to buy all aircraft I have ever flown with each airline. What websites do you reccomend to shop at?

So far I have looked at eBay and

http://www.aviationsupermart.com/

http://www.airplanesuperstore.com/airliner_model.htm

http://www.diecastairplane.com/store/c/2387-Airplane-Selector.html

http://www.airlinemuseum.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=34_41_58

Any better sites out there?

And I am sure someone over the years has mad an AA MD80 diecast in 1:400 scale but have not found it yet.

Well, the ones I'm finding are about $150 apiece, which is a little too much considering I'd need AA, TW, and US(there were all 31 model) liveries. Although that's cheap compared to a $300 9k 402(The joys of EAS!) Think I'll live with the memories.
Thanks for the Tip re: The LAX show. I'll keep an eye out for it.

I grew up in Cape Girardeau (CGI) and spend most of time in the air getting back from ONT to there.
The Current holder of the EAS Contract is Cape air (9K). They only fly Cessna 402s on the EAS route (I think they have some ATRs). Hence my need for a 402.
I 've also flown it when American Connection/Regions Air and TWExpress/Trans States held the contract and flew Jetstreams. I've also ridden from PIT to AOO on a US Express one. Like I said ,I Think I may just forget about the commuter planes I've been on

Karabu came around from 1993 or so and lasted until the end. I never thought the DC-9's were bad myself, but I was definately glad the 717's made their online when they did! It was a sad day when I was on the L-1011, 747 and 727 final flights...

I got this from the operation liftoff store while ordering stuff for my brother for Xmas, I'll blame for this bad habit! It's also the wrong "breed" of Mad Dog for me to have flown in it:

It's a Flight Miniatures/inFlight 200
I used live near MDT. Would you like to go to PHL or PIT?

A Gemini 200
And once you got there, on to STL:

A Gemini 400
Now, to ONT-DEN:

My first couple of trip back were via Ted. Although here lately, it's morphed into a silver MD-80 bound for DFW. It's Another Gemini 400
Speaking of DFW, my First flight was on Ozark to DFW, while there , there was a whole bunch of these sitting awaiting a new owner:

An Inflight 500
I got it because it was lot cheaper than an Ozark dc9 (Maybe I'll reward myself for Christmas),and yes, I'm old enough to remember them flying said dc9's to CGI.

As far as your Diesel 9s' go. Back in the day, they were not a desirable ride. I flew on one once, STL to ATL just after the Ozark merger. Gad zooks! Noisy, smelly and the back of my seat was sticky with hair dressing. Eeeew! Also flew Hughes Air West DC-9s' (AKA The Flying Banannas, AKA Hughes Air Worst) locally and hated it. Uh, like Christmas is on the 25th and it's only the 8th (well maybe the 9th in most places). Exactly how much control over time, space and Santa Claus do you expect us to believe that you have? I think I'm at least in the same time zone as you if not the same ATC and I haven't see no Santa Claus. Has anybody else reading this thread gotten anything from Santa yet this year? That's as crazy as what just happened to me. I woke up to find that while I was asleep, some dickweed broke into my house, drank all my milk, ate most all of my cookies and then leaves a big chunk of carbon with a ribbon tied to it on my floor. What kind of sicko is that? Anyway, Santa Claus is coming to town on the 25th.

I used to think of the Tu-154 as an inferior Russky 727 knock-off. Now that I'm older (and the cold war is over) I'm beginning to really appreciate this airplane. I love how the #2 intake looks like a 7-two with a hush kit and the antenna mount on top the stabilizer looks like an exaggerated B-707. After that tragic crash outside Smolensk, I learned more about this airplane and it's outstanding performance. I now consider the TU-154 as a beautiful airplane most worthy of Tri-Jet worship.

Hello!

I recently bought a Hogan AA B777-200 'Susan Komen'1/200. After I assembled it and glued the landing gear on, I noticed that the model had GE 90 engines and not RR Trents like all AA B777s have. They look way too large for a -200 and they are exactly the same engines as are on my Skymark B777-300ER model. So my question is, can you order 1/200 RR Trent 800s anywhere? Call me perfectionist, but the discrepancy is really bothering me.

Thanks!

As a fellow perfectionist, I'm afraid that the answer to that is .... no. Gemini Jets 200 probably gets the closest to having Trents, but none of them look exactly like Trents.

Anyway, I've added the model that I've wanted for a very, very long time to my collectioon at last: BigBird 1:400 Cathay Pacific B747-267B VR-HKG in the old 1980s green and white stripes livery. In my view, BigBird 400 have the best 747 moulds in that scale than any other manufacturer. Too bad they aren't around anymore ...

So now, here's my CX fleet as it stands at present:

Just a small fleet at the moment, but I intend to add to it as soon as I can afford to.

Herpa Premiums look fantastic. Am trying to do a airport scene with !/72 scale in front and !/144 scale in back with HO trains running around. Do not know if it will work or look good.

I see so little KLM………

Mmm, when it comes to model aircraft, size matters--> I reckon. 1:100 is what I fancy!
I don´t put mine in a glass showcase……….they fly around the house, if you like:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3820316/Screenshot%202011-03-25%20om%2021.20.40.jpg

The hands you see were part of a temporary solution………we have modified the suspension of the MD-11 since then.

Compared to some of you, my collection of 4 aircraft looks a bit pale!

Cheers,

I've got the new Herpa Miniaturmodelle Qantas B737-800 VH-VZD - Herpa sent it to me and it arrived this morning.

One of my photos is adorning the package. Some other people have it:

The 2 latest additions in me collection

EI-DVM , the retro EI jet, bought on board MAD - DUB, not bad for a tenner! It's small, but that suits me. And beside it    a cute lil JL 747 toy we found in El Rastro market....so cute, & poignant as they are now all retired! €3 bargain  http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss78/kierno84/e8cd25e3-22fb-441e-a2be-fdf2cc7a3890.jpg

Everyone seems to have very nice collections!

I have over 300 aircraft (various scales) in my collection (sorry no photos), mainly DAC, and MDC aircraft. I have recently added several Aero Classic "Baby" DC-9's to the collection; Air Florida, Evergreen International, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (Delivery scheme), Continental Airlines (black meatball), and Northwest (90's livery). I am currently awaiting the delivery of my Southwest Airlines MD-95 (717-200) from Atlantic Models.

I know collecting aircraft models is a sickness........HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, but it is a fun one that not only can us the collectors enjoy, but everyone we share our collections with as well.

Cheers

One question - how do you all store your aircraft? Unfortunately I keep my collection in their boxes as I'm worried about them getting damaged, such as by uv rays.

I've been trawling the internet for a loooooong time looking but am yet to find one (I did find Gemini once but I cannot justify paying $200+ for a model airplane)

I prefer kitset models and while I haven't built any for years I have been adding to the collection of models for "when I get around to it again". More to the point when I build locking display cabinets to keep the finished articles in as to keep the wife away coz she thinks that they are disposable toys... Well not untill she found out what some of them are worth!!!

List as follows so far and boy did I get whined at when I purchased two more from the local hobby shop (and even got a discount for bulk buy), but I'd saved my pocket money. My 4yo threw a sad when he couldn't buy one but he'd left his pocket money at home so couldn't buy anything. The sad ended and he just said "oh well next time" when reminded of this much to the amusement of the guys behind the counter.

Anyhow list is thus

1/72

Boeing 707-338B
Boeing KC135R (to go with the Monogram B52)
Boeing E3B AWACS
Boeing 737-219 (ZK-NAC as delivered to Wellington NZ in 1968, custom decals made complete with aussie flag on it due to a stuff up in the paint shop at Renton. My father was one of the engineers present when the plane first arrived in NZ).
Fokker F27-100 ZK-BXE

1/144

Boeing 777-319ER (Air NZ new delivery)
Boeing 737-204 (ZK-NAI last passenger carrying 200 for Air NZ aside from NQC, latter now with Airwork I believe)
Boeing 727-200 (will do this as RNZAF NZ7271, been hunting for one of these for ages but found one at the hobby shop today gathering dust cheaper than eBay, sound of these coming into Welly airport was awesome, flew on one once, hot rod of the skies but gives you the sh!ts when sitting next to the SCD)

1/300

Boeing 777-200ER Singapore Air (see above) to be depicted as an aircraft I flew on once that cost me and continues to cost me a lot of money. That is I flew from NZ to the Philippines on SIA on a 777 just for a holiday and came back with a wee bit more than duty free....There went my boat which was a liveaboard.. Now land locked in WA but that does make storing, building and displaying model aircraft a lot easier.

By the way I've left the military aircraft out as you'd be reading for weeks, but aside from the 1/72 B52 one of relevance to list is a 1/48 Grumman Avenger to be built as NZ2504. The actual aircraft still exists in Wigram Airforce Museum and my grandfather was the navigator of this plane in WW2, It carried the "Nose art" of "Popeye" but is displayed as "Plonky" as flown by Fred Ladd (I forget the serial number of that aircraft, NZ2502?")

Sorry for crappy quality.

Me fella bought this in DOH for me during a stopover   I can't remember what size it is cause I'm only used to building 1:144 models. This lil A332 is teeny but has such beautiful detail, in the landing gear & wings.  http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss78/kierno84/IMG_0996.jpg

I picked up this random EI S330 "Aoife/St.Aoife" in West Main Toys, HKG. It has the same name as me...in HKG...I had to have it. Around €30. Staff there are fantastic & super helpful. I forget what size this is aswell, but it's slightly bigger than the QR A332. The propellers move  http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss78/kierno84/IMG_0997.jpg

Not complete enough to be considered a proper model (yet!) but I figured I'd post a teaser pic anyway… here's the inside of a 1:60 paper 77W I've been working on for a number of years. Hopefully it'll be done within the next couple months!

Aside from this, I can't say I have/collect any models. I made a few as a kid but they turned out terribly.

It's actually made from used manila file folders, believe it or not! It's a technique I learned in architecture class in high school. I've built it from scratch, mainly by looking at pictures.

Believe me, it's not something I can do 24/7! It comes and goes in waves, and requires quite a bit of patience.

Thanks for the feedback!
