The best is definitely Flight Simulator 2004.

I agree. If you have a lower end computer, go with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002. Flight Simulator 2004 is very similar, but features an amazing weather engine and some nice water effects if you have DirectX 9.0b or higher. I usually don't say this about Microsoft, but you can't go wrong with the Flight Simulator series.  

Are you new here Bigpappa. Flight Simulator 2004 is the way to go. But not if you want military simulation. You cant blow stuff up in FS04

I guess no pilots have responded because in terms of realistic flight characteristics the best sim out there is x-plane. This is coming from a long time MSFS user (98, 2000, 2002, 2004). But ever since I started flying for real all the fun is gone because the planes handle nothing like the sim in flight simulator. I tried x-plane after reading a few articles on its use in government and private low-cost simulators and I must say it definitely felt more real.

But MSFS does have way better support/add-owns.

Yeah, difinately flight simu;ator 2004 and buy Ultimate traffic or traffic 2004 to go with that.

In terms of airliners FS2002 will give you 737-400, 777-300 and 747-400, no Airbuses.

If you possibly can, get FS2004, much better weather simulation.

No real liveries at all for copyright reasons, but there's a whole world of add ons, payware and freeware, to be explored out there  .

The base simulator comes with decent weather (FS2004 is much better in that field), a crappy 777, no real liveries. I do like the GA aircraft that come with it though. But, don't let this get you down! There are hundreds of thousands of FREE add-ons for MSFS, available at these websites:

FS2004 is the bomb no doubt, even if you have a "lowER" end computer there are still alot of tweeks one can do to make it run nicer and smoother, plus its all about what kind of controler you use as well, noone will ever get the most of flight sim just useing the keyboard and mouse. Some sort of flight control is almost nessasary, something with a rudder and throttole control is nice as well. Tho FS2004 is FUN and vary user friendly, if its real flght training you want go with X-plane 100%. Tho its not a airport/tree/water/building/car/road/house/weather/flightsim, its still great for training and IFR as well. Its all about fig' out how to get the most out of it tho just like FS2004.

ALSO: I dont consider MSFS or X-plane a game.
