I have just received my first scanner for my birthday. I am now trying to listen to some of the aircraft frequencies but have no luck. I am about 15 miles from JFK and when I enter any of the New York Approach or JFK frequencies it is giving me the Error message. I'm doing it like it says in the manual (or so I think) but the only station I hear is transmitting the weather. Can anyone assist? I am using Uniden model. Thank you in advance to anyone that responds.

You won't be able to hear anything from that far, you might be able to hear the occasional aircraft flying over your house say something to the tower, but thats about it. You won't hear the tower talk back. The only way you could possibly get the signal that far away is to buy one of those antennas that mounts on the roof of your house, and you would probably still have problems getting a proper signal.

you need to scan through the frequencies. I have a Uniden as well but what you need to do is go to the Air frequencies, then you need to do this as follows
1. need to use the squelch button and turn it so that it changes the frequencies
2. use can use the hold button and the NUMBER 2 button to search up or down
3. once u get closer to the frequencies, just manually press up or down
UP = 2
DOWN = 8
Do what i said, and that way u can change the frequencies in a easier way.

No need to get a rooftop antenna - I have one and I get better reception with a £10/$19 aerial that connects directly to the scanner. Take a walk round your house, you will more than likely not pick up Kennedy Tower, but you will have a possible chance at picking up Approach/Departure. These can be more interesting to listen to than Tower/Gnd.
As I said, walk round your house, some places in your house may have better reception than others and sorry I cant help with the scanner problems as I currently own the Icom R-20 (<
