Video Games ... Improve Flying Skills?

I was recently playing my Xbox on Need For Speed Carbon which is an amazing game with great tunes Big grin Now on this game theres loads of shortcuts to avoid tight corners which may if passed, loose you the race. If your speeding towards a possible shortcut at 140+ Mph you have to make a split second decison, either is it a shortcut or a barrier which will indefinatly end the race for you?

I have done this many times and I know pilots need this skill in emergencies and also in some common occurrences.

Does anybody have any views on this?

I like this post actually as is throws up the chance for some good discussions here!!!

I will tell you 2 things! About aviation I can tell you that I know of real world Airbus A340 pilots who told me freely that they own the PSS A340 which they use in fun but more than one said to me that in terms of instruments and such like it really is as real as it gets (of course we cant pretend that it is like the real thing because there is a little bit more to an Airbus than just instruments) but I think what he was trying to say was that if you can work and understand the instruments you could consider that you know your Airbus stuff when it comes to instruments.

The second thing - Brian Lara Cricket on PS1.........after playing with that game my averages increased and that is no word of a lie!!!  Smile

It depends on what you mean by helping...

I've found (and I was the same way for the same reason...) that my students are much better at flying with the instruments than they are visually. Now this would be a great thing if they were getting their instrument rating, but not for student pilots. I constantly have to cover up the instruments to force them to look outside. Where does this come from? Yeah, you guessed it...flight sim. When you're limited to a 2D/limited 3D cockpit (especially when most don't have a TrackIR, which changes things a little bit...), you get really good at flying precision instruments. Problem is, you get used to that and when you try to apply that to the real thing, you end up doing the exact same thing you did in the game...not looking outside.

So as far as reaction times and in our case, instrument flying skills and procedures, yes, video games are great. If you're trying to teach a primary student how to scan for traffic and fly using visual references only, video games are horrible beause they teach bad habit patterns.

That said...I still recommend all of my sudents get FS2004 and fool around. It may not be the real thing, but it costs a heck of a lot less and there is a lot of stuff you can learn from it...for example, how to spin AND recover a Lear 45  biggrin  Seriously though...I did show my student what a spin was and how it happens using a Bellanca Scout in FS2004...he has the recovery procedures down pat now  Smile

This is slightly off topic, but in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, there is a training program where you can earn Sim Wings. It involves 12 hours min of flying time on the sims, multiplayer with six other people, talking on radios, doing flight plans, and then the instructors do a "check ride" with the real private pilot criteria. I got them last summer, and it helped me a lot in getting a scholarship to earn my Gliding wings this summer.


As long as the number of take-offs equals the number of landings...you're doing fine.

Yeah he was questioning what actually happened in a spin and what it looked like, and since we can't actually go do them without parachutes (which we don't have), I figured I'd use FS  Smile That way he could practice the recovery procedures as well instead of just watching a video on YouTube or something like that...
