Im keen to get into collecting airliner models and have been a bit swamped with the choice of makes available. Quite like the look of Herpa but think that the 1/500 models have pretty unauthentic undercarriages. Also like the look of Gemini Jets too
What do you reckon is the best make of model and why?

Well I like the Dragon Wings models the best...they have a very good seceltion of airlines, aircraft type, special liviers and they are very detailed.

I would say Herpa have nice details, and are well made since they are painted and not decaled. They last longer, gain a lot of value(0nce they are discontinued), and if you are interested in building scale airports, they come along with accessories.

Three cheers for Dragon Wings (also Jet-X's which are manufactured by Dragon)....Have started my collection and have never been disappointed with the quality. I agree with your statement that the 1/500 series Herpa's do not provide the details or proper scales in the undercarriage department.

Are you just talking about diecast models, or also plastic. It would help to know what scale you are looking at.
Ther are a number of very good 1:200 scale models - the Herpa premium series, and Nostalgair produce the Super Constellation and Electra.

I would go for Herpa, although their undercarriage may not appeal, the detail painted on them is very precise. Herpa models are usually more expensive than Dragonwings, well they are here anyway.

The best 1:500 brand is Starjet from USA, the 1:400 is Dragon Wings from Hong Kong, the 1:200 plastic assembly kit is Hasegawa from Japan. The german brand is poor, especially Schabak. Herpa is a little bit better, but still not good. They always equip with wrong engines such as Qantas 747SP, Qantas B747-300 'Nalanji Dreaming', South Aftrican B747SP and so on. Very disappointed.
Asian Brand is better!

Models from both Herpa and Starjets are good. And Herpa is now trying to improve the quality of their models. I loved Herpa beause they would only release models which are licensed by airlines. Unlike some other brands, they would try to produce unauthorized models.

I personally prefer Dragon Wings' 1:400 diecast models. The overall shape of the airliners is very convincing, quality of livery application is very good and accurate, authentic looking undercarriages (not those stumpy lumps on Herpa models!!!), wings and stabilisers are not too thick (just compare to the Gemini Jets!!) . . . and there is a wonderful selection of liveries (both regular and special ones).
My only complaint against Dragon Wings is the absence of a selection of beautiful British Airways B744s, Qantas B743 VH-EBU in Nalanji Dreaming livery, Qantas B744 VH-OJC in Melbourne F1 Grand Prix livery, Cathay Pacific B744 in Same Team Same Dream livery . . . but I am still patiently waiting.
But to all Herpa / Gemini Jets / Starjets etc fans out there, no offence intended . . . so long as you like what you collect. At least, you have a better selection of those special liveries.

I think Herpa too, they have a big range, plus you can supplement them with Starjets 1:500 range, and you can get airport accessories for them too, that sets the model off nicely.
And their not that pricey either.

My vote is for the Herpa 1:200 series. The detail is amazing (I just bought a Lufthansa 747-400), the engine turbines even spin!
I have also heard that Herpa has plans to improve the detail on their 1:400 and 1:500 lines -- so you may want to wait and see what they come up with on the smaller end.
