Hi guys,
I need some help over here, whenever I fly a 744 on FSX, around 30mins into it, the speed drops to zero and a virtual freefall happens. Whenever this happens it is on autopilot and i take it off immediately once it starts, and I try and turn off and on the engines again. It always starts to ascend for 5 seconds than once again starts its freefall.

Well... I use FSX now, but when I used FS2002 about 5 years ago I had the same problem with default Boeing 777-300. I think Microsoft couldn't fix any problem since first FSs.
Everything is flexible if you know how to bend it.
Quoting Kimberlyrj (Reply 3): Could it be an icing problem? Ensure you have all the heating equipment on that you need!?
Should there be an icing problem associated with Singapore's hot and tropical climate?
Quoting Kimberlyrj (Reply 3): Is it the basic Boeing 747? or PMDG's version?
No add-ons yet for me
Quoting 9VSIO (Reply 1): Does this happen in all conditions
This reminded me, everytime I have flown a Boeing 747 is with the static weather update. I am now going to try it with the standard weather and then tell you the results
Two words - get some! It will add such a new dimension to your FS.

Try it with just clear weather ie no clouds winds etc and see what happens.

Does the stall warner go off? Or does the speed just plummet. Most times, I think people set their climb on a fixed V/S and the a/c is unable to maintain such a rate at full weights, so the poor thing just stalls.
Me: (Lining up on final) I shall now select an aiming point. || Instructor: Well, I hope it's the runway...

Quoting Ag92 (Reply 7): I don't know much about this but I never go above 2500 on a 744. Most of the times its at 1800
Seems like quite a lot at altitude. Safest way is to climb in airspeed/Mach mode to the target altitude and let the V/S sort itself out. As you near your cruising flight level, you might only be able to climb at a few hundred feet per minute.

Using V/S mode is fine when you know what you're doing. That's why I never use it.
Quoting Ag92 (Reply 11): All right, now what is the heat you are talking about and the level change function?
You might find the Pitot Heat in the default version of most aircraft but I don't think there's such a switch on the real 744, or on the PMDG version. There's Wing Anti-ice and Nacelle Anti-ice on the real aircraft, with switches on the overhead panel.
The Flight Level Change mode is a Boeing autopilot mode. If it's not available on the default version, I'd forget about it. It's been a while since I looked at the default aircrfat.

FL change is not avail on default 747. I always manually monitor and adjust the climbs and descents lest my speed goes a bit haywire...

I believe the default 747 has it labeled "anti-ice", but it must serve as a pitot heat as well. Make sure that is on.
