Hello

I'm right in the process of buying a new PC. My requirements are simple, it must run FSX with multitple addons smoothly  Wink I also use my PC to edit photos and videos a lot, so that would be another point.

As always i want to buy a new one, i'm confronted with a new jungle of hardwares and hope for some help. Based on those requirements and actual hardware market what would you recommend I should buy (Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Videocard). I'm planning to use my currents HD's as they are brand new. Also another point, I'm not very fond to have Vista and would like to keep XP, is it possible with 4Gb RAM or more ? ... my budget is not infinite but quite high...

Help is welcome  Smile

Alpha. Good luck. I've read many blogs on this and have heard so many people say that even the best computers that you could get just don't seem to run FSX well. Frame rates are poor. It seems very hit and miss. I can't believe Microsoft would put out a product like this in this day and age. ANyway, wish I could tell you more. I have a pretty good computer. A real techy told me it would be more than adequate for FSX. It isn't. So I'm sticking with FS 2004.

Thanks Richiemo! I've bought and assembled my new PC already.
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.83GHz
Motherboard Asus PQ5 Deluxe
Radeon HD4850 512MB
RAM DDR2 4Gb
I only made a quick test so far, flew the defaults airplanes and set scenery to medium, I've targeted 30fps, it's ok. But I don't know if it's going to be the same with addons (cockpit/aircraft/scenery). I think I'm going to stick with FS9 too for the moment.
Thanks again Richiemo.

I have similar (maybe worse a little bit) PC configuration and I can run FSX smoothly with all set to ultra-high and many, many addons installed. Try to set everything to high or ultra high, install few addons and check it. I think you can run it with those settings smoothly too.

My PC:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.68GHz
Asus Striker Extreme motherboard
Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS 320MB motherboard
DDR2 2Gb RAM
Seagate Barracuda 160GB HD (now nearly 40GB is occupied by FSX and it's addons Big grin)

Everything is flexible if you know how to bend it.

Acro, good feedback. Finally a specific example with addons etc and high FPS. I may have to try to duplicate your machine. I only really want FSX cause you can see the aircraft shadows in wingview, which you can't in FS9. That's big to me. Thanks again.

This is a link to an article by Jordan Moore @ Hovercontrol.com

http://www.hovercontrol.com/artman/publish/article_90.shtml

It explains the importance of choosing the correct video card and it works.
Jordan Moore and Hovercontrol are an excellent resource for flight sim info.

I don't get it. My PC isn't the best (my newest hardware is getting on for a year old) but I can still get 30-50 FPS with the PMDG 744X and sliders above halfway. I'm more convinced than ever that these blogs are in the same league as those that decry Vista because of something "my mate told me". Sorry but anyone who tells you "it can't be done" is talking out of the wrong orifice.  Smile

I think what they mean is that there is no PC that can run FSX smoothly with all the sliders to the right and all the add-ons (AI and custom high resolution scenery) and a big resolution monitor. You will always have to trade something for performance... not like with FS9, that you can load it up with addons and everything and the sim will run like a dream in a high performance PC while landing at Heathrow.

I'm referring to the many comments that FSX can't be run "at decent settings" on any PC available today. I couldn't put all the sliders to the right with FS9 on the previous hardware.
