PRESS RELEASE: AVSIM Hacked!!

Tom Allensworth, CEO and Publisher of AVSIM, today issued the following announcement; “We regret to inform the flight simulation community that on Tuesday, May 12, AVSIM was hacked and effectively destroyed. The method of the hack makes recovery difficult, if not impossible, to recover from. Both servers, that is the library / email and web site / forum servers were attacked. AVSIM is totally offline at this time and we expect to be so for some time to come. We are not able to predict when we will be back online, if we can come back at all. We will post more news as we are able to in the coming days and weeks. END

Best Regards,
Tom Allensworth

What?! Why would someone do this?  Sad So many people put so much time and effort into that site.

For me this is pure terrorism. An important and prominet website of our community gets switched off. There is so much cyber - terrorism around us.

One lesson I learned myself a while ago and now again. Do not rely on mirrors as only backup. AVSIM, as Tom reported elsewhere, was running on two servers, one for the forums, one for the library, each backing up the other. Since both lost their file systems in this attack, they do not know what they can recover as of now.
Mirrors are good for daily backing up, but all data that you haven't on at least two cold backups well stored away are lost data. I hope this experience tells the other operators to check how they have organized their backups.

Avsim also host downloads from other flight sim websites so this will be such a loss to the flight sim community as a whole if they cannot retrieve their files.

If this is a deliberate act I hope they find who the perp was who did it and (if it's possible) bring legal action against them.

Oh no!! that's the reason why I could not access the site this morning.

This would be a HUGE loss to the community and I hope they can get it back up again.

And to the people who did this to AVSIM I hope you get a whole AN225 shoved up your....  gnasher

That's too bad, Sorry to hear about it.

I haven't used FSX in over a year. I just got tired dealing with all of the little issues FSX/Vista had. At some point it started being more work than fun. But when I was still a heavy MSFS user I used AVSIM multiple times a day. In fact AVSIM was the reason I first got broadband.

Sweet lord..if the entire file library is indeed lost, that would be the biggest loss for the Flight Simulator community ever. Unimaginable. I really, really, REALLY hope they can restore the file library.

Tom Allensworth has set up a temporary forum, to be found here:

it does look like the entire file library is gone forever though..this is the saddest event ever for the FS community.

At least the closing of ACES could have been reversed when the economy recovers. The loss of AVSIM would truly be tragic for the hobby, the knowledge base is irreplaceable. At least the scope of employment loss is minimal in comparison.

2009 is shaping up to be a really bad year for flightsim.

Who in their right mind would do something like this? This is extremely sad. I really hope that AVSIM will recover, otherwise this will be a enormous loss for every FS user.

Wow it really is dead. Talk about a hacker with nothing better to do. You'd think they'd be more interested in screwing with companies or governments. Maybe it was just practice for something bigger and worse they have planned. Who knows.

This is one of my saddest days as an FS user. Thoughts certainly go out to Tom and company.

Question, not at all to downplay the event, but it seems with each person that has created the files, all they would have to do is "re-upload" their files. Obviously, with so many files, not all of them could be, but it seems like if they could set up another file library, people would bring their stuff back.

This is a really sad day for all FlightSim enthusiasts.

Cheers,

Thanks for the show of support.

When they do come back and get up and running, I hope that you don't feel obligated what-so-ever to download any files.

Thats very sad. Yes they could have done a backup but we are all human and you know when you are doing an essay or long post and you think *i will be fine* and lose connection once you have done the last paragraoh before hitting save you cant go back in time and save, so its probably like that, on a larger scale though.

Also it can bhe annoying saving and saving after a small sentence and then someone might post saying what the heck are you on about lol.

Hope Avsim will bounce back quickly and efficiently.

I have nearly all the files I downloaded saved, and will gladly upload them to give something back.

This site helped me explore the FS world, and make it better then when it came out of the box.

I used AVSIM multiple times a day.

Same here, both visiting and posting on the forums, and downloading from the library. I also have done some work in the past as a front page news editor for AVSIM. I was, to put it very mildly, shocked when I found out yesterday morning about what had happened.

But didn't they also host support forums? There must be a lot of useful stuff lost there.

As far as FS downloads go, there's still FlightSim. If they haven't done so already, I hope they're taking steps to ensure it doesn't happen to them.

It is a very sad day indeed and only shows that some people in this world, will do anything to get ahead or get revenge....

I, hope for one, AVSIM does come back, bigger and stronger and the files that perhaps are lost can either be recovered or re-uploaded..

Ill be glad to upload files i got from AVSIM for the past 4-5 years back on the websites (as many others have said) to make sure the library is back and people can have these files for their use.

Although I think it was silly of them not to keep a backup of the site, I can't help but feel at such a loss. So many of my free-bees come from Avsim, and I'm sure all the other avid FSers out there will agree that it is the little things we pick up from places like Avsim that makes our FS, our own personal FS.

My laptop died a couple of days ago and with it took all of my Avsim downloads. I'm totally shocked someone would do something like this. Why not destroy something worth destruction like Kiddie Porn sites or something?  Angry

I've downloaded hundreds of files from that site and uploaded a few of my own. I was devastated when I found out what happened because I visited that site almost everyday and got so much helpful advice from the forums. I think the whole reason I enjoy simming so much was because of that site and the files they hosted. I feel bad for Tom and his guys, they put countless hours into what they enjoyed and some lowlife just comes and wipes it all out.
