FS9/FSX: Where Are You Flying At The Moment?

Couldn't see any topic like this, so I'll ask, where are you flying at the moment in Flight Sim?

Today I've done TSV-SYD in the MD-11, and I'm currently trying to ferry the plane from SYD-LAX. That's not going very well. I'll make it on the fuel load, however - I'm near Nadi, and just had a severe inflight upset due to some very nasty weather. Went down about 4000 feet.  Wow!

The worst seems to be at FL360, so I'm staying around FL340.

I'm still going...  Really long flight. Argh... I don't dare accelerate the time, for fear that FSX will crash, or the MD-11 will do something strange. Not much to see, it's night time.

Haven't had any "traffic, traffic" messages for a long while. Did have a few between Australia and Fiji though.

I flew for the first time today in over a month. Been busy with harvest and field work. Had some rainy days now though so I went from VHHH to YSSY in the PMDG 747.

I discovered I could save the flight and resume it later with the MD-11.  Now about 475Nm from Top of Descent point, cruising at M0.818 at FL430. There have been no further in-flight upsets. That's the first time I've ever had one in Flight Simulator - quite alarming to see the plane suddenly descending very, very quickly.

I will land on RWY07R at KLAX. It seems quite cumbersome to set the STAR on this FMS system, especially with the alternate plan nearby on the same page.

Though maybe it's a lack of practice.   (more likely)

I do not do long flights, maybe an hour or two at a time. I haven't flown in over a week, I have been working on adding in additional ai to my sim,

Well, earlier today I experimented with FSPassengers in SDA, doing some "war zone training". It was exciting, to say the least, though I wouldn't want to be a pilot of an aircraft shot in a warzone in real life... who would, really? I ended up landing on the grass but everyone got out safely.  bigthumbsup

Tonight I'll be running the SQ SIN-CHC service, and will make a return flight tomorrow. Aircraft: Boeing 777-200ER. The last flight I made was a fictional one, SIN-HKG-SFO and return with a SQ 77W.

I haven't flown in several months and recently re-installed EVERYTHING on a different computer.

So my flights for tomorrow are going to be KPAE-KSFO-KPAE in the PMDG 737, PMDG 747, and PSS 777. That way I get two take-offs, one ILS, and one visual in each aircraft. Plus I have a scenery for SFO, and, PAE makes sense for Boeing aircraft. Than I will test my Wilco Airbus aircraft on CDG-LHR-CDG for both the A320 and A340. For WIlco Embraer, I do YYZ-YOW-YYZ. Than I can begin real flying again.

And people say you can't burn off a week after exams...pshhh. :-P

Not to hijack this thread, but when I try starting FS9 I get a warning that says it can't copy Esselerate and shuts down. Any help?

Last night I landed at FNJ, flying the freeware Samdim An-148. I downloaded a freeware scenery for FNJ and it looks very nice with the terminal buildings and decorations with flags for North Korea and a big picture of the dear leader on the terminal. All I saw was some general aviation and a few Il-76, Tu-204, Il-18 and some Tu-154s for Air Koryo. I know Air China also operates here, maybe I might see them later on. The first thing that I did was to modify my GA traffic to remove all GA flights from FNJ (they fly elsewhere now), as I do not think there is much in GA there. Now I am working on adding in some military traffic to some of the surrounding airbases (another freeware addon for North Korea). And I also downloaded a freeware Tu-204 and a repaint for Air Koryo and will spend a few days in this region doing flights to Beijing.

Not too sure how hot it is when it's negative 50 celcius.

I flew patterns around PASI today in an empty PMDG 747-400F. Some of my best landings have been at that airport in that plane. Only had one approach stall today, luckily I recovered - but overheated the brakes in the process when I landed long.

That is actually ISA +06 - which is very warm indeed, and it kills the climb performance too. Later on in the flight, nearer to Barbados, the forecast was for -83C at high altitude! It's an interesting phenomenon that causes those temperatures to be much colder as you get near the equator.

At -50C, the airframe temperature was hovering between 126C and 128C most of the time, hence the idiot warble tone driving me nuts! The TMO is 127C. That's a temperature differential of nearly 180C.

So although -50C for us would be bitterly cold indeed, out on the wings of the plane, if you could stand there in flight, the temperature of those would probably be in the mid 90C range, or low 100C range. You could almost certainly fry an egg.

Tried to fly Yak-40 TAT-BTS today, FS crashed on me, so I took me a Tu-154 KSC-BTS finished with beautiful PAR controlled approach, then tried taking Il-18 to TAT from BTS, but, technology prevailed once again. All in all, it was a nice return to history (we had an event on IVAO) I am thinking about flying some nice SAS routes i MD-80 tomorrow.

Concorde to Barbados, again from London. Maybe about almost 45min to 1hr of flight, then something bad happened. The plane went crazy, and I flew it back to Cork under manual control, with only the standby artificial horizon operational, and only 2 engines working.

Damn that was hard work - and I'm done for now.

Well, I'm trying the same flight again - but this time without any issues. I've also turned off engine damage this time around.   I also don't have wind shear and turbulence this time (no flashing 88888 displayed on the INS left-side display in a certain mode).

I spotted an S7 TU-154 at Heathrow too when lining up for takeoff (and then troubleshooting an errant "PFC" master warning light). It's working fine so far though.   Nice weather too, -58C at 49,000ft.

Currently doing 1280mph at 49,000ft (M1.96). 3690 miles still to go according to the "Marilake" plasma display in the cabin.

I'm again doing EGLL-TBPB (Barbados). Currently about 231nm away from Barbados at FL577, the outside air temperature is a reasonably cold -75C!   Just encountered a bit of a temperature shear as I hit a bit of a temperature layer, so it was a little bit bumpy. It has smoothed out now.

Edit: Now up to 60,000ft! Levelled off. Will start descent now.

Edit 2: Woah, engine surge on one of the engines.  Wow! That made a huge bang.

Edit 3: Now landed. 3h:45m. Over 7000km.

Not much of a reliable plane, is it?

Did not fly yesterday myself, but me and a friend met up on a 36hrs event on IVAO and instructed another buddy on Tu-154. He flew pretty good, for a first timer.

More likely I'm not operating it with as much care and precision as I should use. I should have adjusted the engine power in a much more gentle fashion.

That's actually what I was supposed to do - but I was a little bit heavy handed. It demands careful throttle movements at high altitudes. It's very realistic.

I'll do a return flight from Barbados soon, or maybe I'll go via New York.

Approach was via SL1 and KATHY. I also descended a little bit too quickly, costing precious time. Screenshots will come later.

Oh hell yes! Even without add-ons if my graphics are set too low. He's probably hitting un-seen trees. Case in point, flying a helicopter down the Las Vegas strip or landing anywhere in the "Magic Kingdom". As soon as you're below rooftop level....CRASH! Strange though, I can land a heli on the playing field at some MLB stadiums but not all. When you touch down on some fields the skids go below the terrain but doesn't crash you!

They are coming soon Kevin! I was out creating some real screenshots of real planes today.   Perhaps I'll get a bit of time and process 7 more and get over 100 images on airliners.net.

Next flight I think could go down to Bahrain, although I might just do a trans-atlantic crossing. I'm struggling with the fuel use on Concorde, it's a bit different to the old FS2004 version and I've had a few flights where I ended up with a bit less fuel than I expected.

That Barbados to London flight I took off with 95.4T of fuel, and still arrived with not much left over. If I had to do any extra long diversions or multiple holds over Ockham, it would have been really marginal.

Not bad, just over 8000ft and already doing 500mph!   That's real speed.

Though I've seen some real-life Qantas B747-400/ER planes doing some seriously speedy travelling at 7000ft on departure out of Sydney sometimes. Not quite Concorde fast, but really fast for a B747.

The Barbados flights starting just before dusk (when it is still dark) are always some of the best ones for amazing sunrise views - because you fly towards the rising sun, so the sunrise happens very fast.  Smile

But as you can see in the cabin view above at 8100ft, there was still 4240 miles to go (normal miles, the display converts from nautical miles). When you enter the value in nautical miles into the controller for that display, and lock the number in, it converts it over for you. When you are on the ground, it shows the welcome message, and once you are in the air, it rotates between the DTG (distance to go) and outside air temperature numbers. Mach number and miles per hour are always displayed.

The Barbados flights are among the longest Concorde flights you can do. And with this one at 3h 40 minutes, I actually arrived about 10 minutes sooner than I expected. The usual time is around 3h 50min. The prevailing jet-stream activity over the Atlantic brings slightly higher speeds sometimes. If you get really good conditions, you can go very fast indeed. I had one flight already with over 1420mph cruise speed.

I don't know about other FS planes, but with Concorde, high temperatures very clearly affect the climb performance. Although the speed is still okay, since the ground speed is still quite good - so the virtual passengers are still getting value for money.

If you have colder conditions, you'll climb much higher and faster. With Active Sky Enhanced, if you program in a flight plan from say London to Barbados, or London to Bahrain, set the cruise altitude to 58000 feet, or 60,000 feet and look at the difference between the air temperatures. Down near the equator, the upper air temperatures are much colder indeed.

And on the Concorde (even in FSX), when you swap the engine rating from climb to cruise at just on M2.00 (there are a number of checklist items to do at that point), in those very cold conditions, the engine speed will be slightly reduced. Across the North Atlantic, when doing the same thing, the engine speed usually doesn't change at all.

It's plenty long enough, and it was a regular visiting place for Concorde (BA). They would carry only 80 passengers, but typically with extra luggage. It gets off the runway easily enough with room to spare - but the 4250 mile journey is sometimes pushing the limits of Concorde range.

Quoting kevinl1011 (Reply 117):

About the lowest altitude would be 29,000ft, anything less would be treated to the infernal warble tone from the overspeed indicator. It's very insistent and irritating.   Really encourages you to deal with the overspeed very quickly. But I stick to the procedures.

Barbados is more fun on departure, it is flat out right away, no noise abatement. Certainly not like Kennedy and the Canarsie Climb which is very elaborate.

One I haven't tried yet is Cardiff to London via Bay of Biscay. In real life, that was where Concorde went from take-off to Mach 2.0 in less than 9 minutes. (60,000ft also in less than 9 minutes). If I remember right, it was G-BOAG or G-BOAE that did that. I've tried other times with training fuel loads, and the rate of climb was simply crazy with full power. The take-off distance was also very short, and the plane was very difficult to control on the ground, extremely easy to go too fast on the taxiways.

Bahrain was another place they used to visit, and it's a very unusual flight with a long subsonic sector over Europe before going supersonic over the Adriatic and Mediterranean.

Thanks...I've spent quite a bit on payware for airports since the launch of FS9 as I hate arriving at generic looking airports. especially if they are airports I'm familiar with in the real world. I like the little touches you get with POSKY's 738's like the push-back truck and ramp engineer walking back.

Personally, I did DL 110 ATL-LAX last night, and probably going to do DL 017, LAX-SYD, 772LR sometime this weekend or maybe sometime next week.

Yeah, I was with Singapore Air Virtual a while ago and they used to allow manually logged PIREPs with no online flying which was great, but then they switched to an ACARS based system where you had to be logged onto VATSIM and I just found that more trouble than it was worth.

Quoting aerdingus (Reply 153):

With Air NZ virtual you do not have to fly with online ATC, but PIREPs are filed automatically via an online ACARS program (XACARS/SimMILES). As I'm new to that system I haven't quite got used to the little quirks of the system yet. I'm sure it will all come good...eventually.

Yes! it used to be a great airline, the DC10s flew everywhere, LHR, MAD, FCO, CDG, FRA even to Billund in Norway!

I flew on their A300s back in 1990 or 1991 from CCS to PMV, I was not entirely aware of airplanes and such back then, but my mom just told me "we are flying on the Airbus 300 to PMV" and I still remember that day.. I even remember what they gave me for lunch, it was a box with 2 half sandwiches in there (white and brown bread).

Nothing at the moment, but today I flew a 737-800 in modified Pacifica colors (really good looking ones I might add) around the islands of Hawaii starting at Honolulu.

I particularly like flights around Hawaii because you get a fair number of somewhat challenging landings with shorter runways.

Exactly!

Been flying around Chile lately, somewhere I'd love to go in real life, fascinating part of the world. An AV 762 BOG-SCL & LA 763 PUQ - SCL. The LA flight was the best but unfortunately I landed with the a/t still engaged. No bother, I just shut the engines down on the runway

"An FS Accident Investigation discovered that the PF was distracted during the final landing phase due to painting & decorating her room at the same time, and did not notice the a/t still selected. The flaps were also found to be in the wrong position. The PNF also failed to pay attention, and was scraping wallpaper off during the crucial phase of landing. Engines were shut down on the runway, and no-one was injured."

Yeah...the problem is on the Microsoft end, as apparently the weather server doesn't work anymore, and based on comments in other forums, fixing the problem does not seem to be a priority for Microsoft.

I was (for the first time in about a year in and a bit) doing a proper flight, CDG JNB in a Airbus 380 of Air France.
Flight was fine, 447 people on board, perfect flight. Was watching the IFE (A movie on telly lol) and keeping an eye on the screen, fuel flow etc when I looked over at my 15 min mark and it had crashed.

Replayed from 120 seconds before the crash and all was fine. 2:30 out of JNB, cruising at a steady speed at 36000 feet, when all of a sudden it shook a little and crashed. not deviating altitude. Like it hit a brick wall mid-air.

I was on final approach for Rwy 20R at SIN during a thunderstorm a few days ago. It was just about the scariest landing I have ever made. About 3 miles out a sudden head wind pitched me up about 200 feet above the glide-slope and then (thankfully with the wheels only 10 feet or so from touchdown) I lost about 40 kias. Must have been a microburst.

Landed safely in SIN, though had a major comms problem so had to circle the airport to check runways and such for landing (Was stuck on a MAA frequency, and even with manual adjustment it kept going back to MAA)

Time to tackle Australia tomorrow

Good flight from SIN-DRW. No problems on the DRW-SYD until I got to SYD and the weather was, well, crap. Had to go around late due to a slow moving plane on the runway, and then it took me ages to land again. Did it in the end.

Now en route to NOU.

Took off safe and sound from NOU heading to Pago Pago. About 100 miles out the clouds started to build and I started hearing thunder. Very bumpy approach, not helped by my flaps seizing up the damn things and my throttle lever sticking to idle. Got on the ground all well and good and got the thing sorted. Now en route for the LONG leg to HNL.

I have Christmas Island in mind if the winds are not good meaning I will get to HNL low on fuel.

Woke at 4am (Before my alarm as well lol) and made a safe landing into LAX.

After a bit of a rest, took of en route to JFK. Nearly coming up to the least legs of this RTW trip.

Landed safe and sound in JFK, and took off en route to Ponta Delgada in the Azores. Nice flight, but HORRID weather and a nasty cross wind made it hard to land when I finally got there.
Now am en route back home (Well home of the plane) TXL, the final leg of the journey..

Safely landing in TXL to complete my first RTW trip in a good few years

I've rather 'specialised' in RW trips over the last few years. I find working out the best routes, and then flying them as best I can in 'real weather,' provides constant stimulation - in that things can and often do go wrong!

I've done it in all sorts of aeroplanes - including the default Cessna and even a nicely-modelled Hawker Hurricane - and especially enjoy using Robert Christopher's excellent Lancair Legacy. The ideal for me is really an aeroplane that has a range of the order of 1,500nms.; that means that you have to be pretty inventive about routes because, as examples, Honolulu-San Francisco is over 2,000nms., so you have to go round the Pacific rather than across it; and even a key part of the traditional Great Circle route Australia/Australia (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada to Lisbon, Portugal) can't be flown direct, a stop in the Azores is 'mandatory.'

Just at the moment I've 'made a change' from my usual Melbourne-Melbourne trips, deciding to re-enact Scott and Black's legendary 1934 Mildenhall (UK)-Melbourne trip in the (still beautiful) FS2004 DH88 Comet. I stopped everywhere they were required to stop (Baghdad, Allahabad, Singapore, Darwin, and Charleville in Queensland) and also allowed for a half-hour stop at each point (as they did).

Pleased to report that I made it to Melbourne in 58 hours. That is better than the 71 hours they took; but no credit to me as I had built and installed an autopilot, usually got a night's sleep in between legs, and avoided the problem they had late on (one of the engines pretty well 'signing off' due to duff petrol being supplied before the leg to Darwin). How they EVER did it - with only the most basic instruments, zero visibility and/or storms a lot of the time, several 700-mile flights over the open sea, and no sleep barring what they could grab in their seats while the other guy was hand-flying, beats me; I'm lost in admiration for them, it was literally 'death-defying'!

I was also astonished by the performance of the (faithfully-modelled) Comet. After a couple of cautious trips, husbanding the fuel, I found out that Geoffrey De Havilland seems somehow (probably through the perfect streamlining) to have managed to build in a sort of 'reverse fuel economy' - the aeroplane tends to produce better 'miles per gallon' (yes, the ASI on the model reads in mph!  ) than it does at lower throttle settings. I already knew that Scott and Black flew at full throttle most of the time, after my FS 'flight' I now know why .

If anyone wants to know more about the real-life flight, this shows a (remarkably laconic) account of the trip by Scott (and Black, though he only says one word!) on their return:-

http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=5431

And this gives a good account both of the race and of the rest of Scott's ('chequered') life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._W._A._Scott

I've decided that, having reached Melbourne in such a short time, I'd better 'convert' the trip to a round-world attempt. I usually aim to complete them within five days. 'Touch and go' whether I make it though, the first stage of the 'second leg' is inevitably to plug north over the Pacific, enduring the (normally 'prevailing from the east') winds close to the Equator. But I hope to make up the lost time once I reach Honolulu and head for San Francisco, after that I can hope for some help from the (westerly) 'Roaring Forties' above about 30 degrees North.

Sorry for such a long post, but I hope it's of interest.

I have not flown for a long time. Actually my FS became corrupt and I was very lazy on reinstalling it. However after a recent trip out to PHX and also taking a helicopter ride out in Sedona, Arizona, I have the flying bug again, and have been busy on reinstalling my FS. I soon hope to be flying around Arizona soon, as I was just amazed at the landscape out there.
