Hello from sunny Boston  Smile
Sorry for being quiet... The Air Canada 777-300ER really took us by surprise and we have been filling orders for the last 3 weeks... Trying to get the next title released but who knows if it will be this Friday... if not it will have to wait 2 weeks as we won't be able to do a release next week...
Will be back with news soon...

Glad to see that the AC 77W was/is such a big success ... but can you give us any pointers to what the next release will be, when it does come?

Narrowbody, widebody ... western/Russian ... new type?

OK so the release today is an Airport DVD... Had been a long while since we did one of those  Smile
This is a great program... Its 4 and a half hours long... longest single DVD I believe... and if features the 5 busiest airports in Spain... Madrid, Barcelona, Palma, Malaga and Las Palmas... with footage filmed in the last 15 years.

Next WAR release I suspect in 2 weeks...

ok well for the rail fans, sorry... it was a joke...
There will be a new airline joining the series in December and another one in January... I'm very excited about both... The 1st one is a smaller airline but fantastic pilots make this a great program... 4 hours long with short and long haul and some destinations we haven't been to before... The 2nd one is a big airline that I never expected to see in the series... thats the update for now. Have a great December!

Hi. JPV Any clues to the new one.

Final release of 2009 will arrive on Friday...
European Airline...
Will feature a medium haul aircraft and route to 2 destinations...
Will feature a long haul aircraft and route to 3 destinations...
Airline is part of a group we've already featured in the series
Great crews make this a very interesting program
4 Hours long!!

What I find nice in this program is that the medium haul part of the DVD and the long haul part were directed by different people so each of the 2 hours bring different styles...

I believe it's Lufthansa. Star Alliance member, extensive short- and longhaul network, popular airline.
ArkeFly doesn't seem special enough for JP to say he'd never expected to see them featured in the series.
If my guess becomes true, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get this program for Christmas. If not, I'm going to stick to Air Canada  Wink

Since the second isn't part of any group now, that is very well the case.

Any clues before Christmas on the new release? It's a big airline this time isn't it?

A bit early to start talking about the next release... Probably won't be out till Jan 15th but I have a feeling a lot of people will be interested... will return to this in a week or so...
In the meantime I want to wish everyone a nice end to the decade and great start to the new decade. Can't believe this will be the 20th year we're doing this...
All the best!

I just wanted to say that I'm one happy camper. I got the AC 763 & AC 77W for Christmas.

What a fantastic pair. And the Quality of the production gets better by each year.

I had been wanting a good Boeing 77W and/or Boeing 77LR for some time and got it.

I do hope that JustPlanes consider making an MD-11 before the last pax operation shuts down. They are becoming rearer by the day.

Hello all,
Happy 2010!

New program should be arriving next Friday but could be the following Friday... will confirm this weekend with a couple of clues.

As far as filming more about the MD11. We will if we get the opportunity. Not too many around. We have released a few programs already including the one with Varig, VASP, Citybird and the extremely popular one featuring Swiss International.
Hopefully there will be a 5th program at some point although nothing in the works at this time.

Thanks for the comments about the Air Canada DVDs. Email us some comments for our website, those are always extremely welcome.

Thanks again and talk soon!

Clue 1) Aircraft Type featured once before.
I do not want to be a sour puss, but there are not many aircraft (with exception of Russian ) that you have not covered before.

I understand that the airline is either one of the "big ones" or it is one that you thought you may not get i.e. American or British, is this correct?

I'm very curious to see what the next release will be... certainly looking forward to finding out on Friday! Challenging clues so far, well done!!

As mentioned by several above, an IB A340-600 could be a strong candidate. Perhaps with a MAD - LIM - MAD routing, approx right time on the return leg and Peru would be a new country for the series...

Clue 5) Airline is in Europe Top 10 of most carried pax Jan-Jun 2009

Newest clue: Clue 6) DVD features a new language in the series

OK, let's see if we can work backwards. There are not that many aircraft typees that can fly an 11h35 route. Many that can have been featured a number of times. We can safely say it's not an MD11, as that has been discussed above. The A330-200, A340-200, A340-2/300 have all been done before. I think the A346 has as well, with SAA The 777-300ER has also been done once also, so I think it's going to be one of those two.

One language that I don't think (without being 100% sure) has been done is Korean and both AF and LH fly the 77W and 346 to ICN. I think KLM used to bring 77Ws to ICN as well and of course, these three are well in the top ten of airlines in Europe.

One clarification - is 11h35 the scheduled time, or the actual trip time?!

Anyway, I'm going with AF (77W) or LH (346) to ICN - that's my guess!!

The TUIfly German version is 51 minutes longer than the English version according to your website.

Is it just cockpit tours etc that have been covered in English a lot in the past? I could see the logic in that as the cockpit tours can get quite technical on some of your DVDs and some non-native English speakers might miss quite a bit due to the technical words in English.

Well since Iberia is a Spanish airline and the crew might not be very fluent in English, it makes sense to let them explain portions of the flight in their native tounge. Also considering that this dvd program might be a big hit in Spain the concept of having a portion in spanish makes good business sense.

Actually that is exactly what it is... We've done countless cockpit presentations of the 737 in English... had never done one in German so we figured this is a chance to do that... The English version is still 3 hours long so you're not losing anything that would not have been in there had there not been a German presentation...

Hi,

I got my AC 767 DVD this afternoon and have already finished watching it. Verdict: Absolutely recommendable.
I was particularly impressed with the crews, especially the first one, had a good laugh every now and then  laughing  The one to bring the plane back to YYZ was very professional as well though. Other than that, great destination choice, suited the B767 very well - gorgeous plane, period.
I am kind of spoiled by the Pilotseye HD videos, they are quite a bit ahead of you, quality-wise. On the other hand, I prefer your kind of filming (i.e. more focused on the systems and actual flying than on the landscape). Optimum deal would be their quality paired with your filming.
Anyway, hope to see more from Air Canada in the future.

Indeed. The 777 info was not on the Airline page for Air Canada... Has been added now, thanks!

Earliest release for the next program is Friday Feb 12th. So a bit early...
Next Friday we're hoping to put on sale some of the sold out DVDs we located a few copy's of in our warehouse over the last couple of months... Might include Kuwait, Binter Canarias, VG Airlines, Transavia etc... but we're talking 1 to 4 copy's per title...

I'd be very interested in the Binter Canarias one depending on how much postage to the UK would be.

Shipping will be standard shipping for our orders on our website.
I believe there might only be 1 copy of the Binter so once these DVDs are put in our shopping mall, don't wait too long to grab it...

Went online to see what 1lb package costs to Finland and its $10.76
Add to that the cost of a box, of the inside protection and the insurance for loss and you're over $12... so I would say that $9.50 is too low...

Clue 2) Not A380
Clue 3) European Airline
Clue 4) Program features 3 manufacturers
Clue 5) Destinations include AMS, CDG, FRA, MAD and 1 new one

I was thinking AF but now I reckon it's TAROM and the new type will be the A318.

The fact that it has the MD82 is a real bonus as I don't have a DVD with the Maddog in my collection.

I have been in the cockpit of a couple of SK 737s and the crews were all very kind and friendly so I think this DVD should be a winner.

Great news, especially as it will hopefully be the start of a long standing relationship between SK and JPV; hopefully we'll see A330/340s featuring in future.

Interesting to see the photo of the 736 crew ... is this the first time JPV has worked with an all-male crew?!

We know it is an excisting airline as you said it is A NEW PROGRAME

We also know it is not a A380 B787 or a A350 as you would be jumping over the moon and shouting so loud i would be able to hear you in the UK

So in fact you have given us only 1 clue "a new type of aircraft"

There are more clues...
1) You know its an airline that is already in the series...
2) You know its a type of aircraft thats not be done before
3) You know tomorrow is a special anniversary for that aircraft...

I know its not easy but with those 3 clues it has to be possible to find exactly which airline and aircraft will be released tomorrow... but if you can't.. no big deal... it will be on our website in 8 hours...

Good luck though

It's the Everts C--46 and DC-6. I like the look of this. I like the change of pace that these more "rustic" airlines have. Old planes that we would otherwise never see inside let alone flying and the difference in the general operations of the airlines. Not to mention the stunning Alaskan scenery.
From a very famous airline like SAS last release to Everts this week is very good. Makes the JPV series have such a range of airline styles.

If that is all you produced then i would never buy any more of your products and then i would even then consider hanging myself. But you DO feture other aircraft and when you use either Airbus or Beoing you bring us such "Classics" such as the Air Canada 777

When you take the C-46 you get something totally different from the norm of what we film in other programs.
Its not for everybody but you learn to love it.
I remember when the Vancouver Island footage came in and I watched a bit of it I thought it was blah and as the program came together I really started loving it and still think its a great program even though its on a really tiny aircraft...

I asked this question on another thread and they won't be going to bluray for a while....

this was justplanes post:

'Hello kids...
Let me just say that when the market is ready for the next format, we will be there. Right now it is not... When you produce the amount of titles we produce you can't afford to be producing different formats....
We were the first ones to switch from VHS to DVD but only once we knew for sure that DVD was going to be the next thing... it will be the same this time... so I'm afraid that until that time comes we will continue the current format.
Also you're comparing us to a company who's produced 5 or 6 titles and may produce a couple more... If we were producing 1 or 2 titles a year we would have them in Blue Ray as well...
Hope that answers this question... if not let me know...

[Edited 2010-04-13 13:03:26]

PS there already is another company that offers these kind of videos in an HD format:

Its not HD or Blue Ray....
As I explained a while back... HD DVDs are dead...
The DVDs in HD format you mention are none other than the same DVDs we release. They are filmed with an HD camera but they are produced on the same DVD we use so really there is very little gain to make that worthwhile... What we are waiting for is Blue Ray and as soon as we know that that will indeed be the format of the future and that the licenses and fees are brought back to a level where we can sell the Blue Rays at a competitive price we will go that route.... We don't want to have to sell them for 50 bucks and we don't want to have to still produce both DVDs and Blue Rays...
Just like when we switched from VHS to DVD and stopped producing videos, we will go Blue Ray and stop DVDs...

This announcement pertains to old/sold out programs that we are going to make available....

No warehouse clearout... Those programs have been sold out for a while and this is a new way of viewing them... You will see by Friday hopefully if we're ready to launch but its looking good...

Keep in mind that these programs are sold all over the world. My guess is that many people still do not have an HDTV and bluray players yet and to be honest they are pretty darn expensive. Also if they went bluray these programs would be more expensive. Instead of $30 they go for as much as $40.

Over the last 5 years I've bought about 50 of these programs and if they were any more expensive I'd probably have to think twice before buying them.

Very good Alberchico!!

You are dead on as far as renting old/sold out programs online.
We were not going to re-run old and sold out programs anymore so we came up with a solution that makes them available to our viewers at a low price.
Starting with the AIR DO B767 and YES AIR L1011 which sold out around 5 years ago... these programs will be available for less than $6 for a 1 day rental or less than $10 for a month rental.

And as far as HD/Blue Ray you hit the nail too... People don't want to pay $50 for a Blue Ray right now... We will release the Blue Rays when we can release then for around the same price as we sell the DVDs now... Just like when we switched from VHS to DVD, we did not increase the price...

So give the rental a shot and post some comments here so we can see where we take that...

I like the idea of the rental but there are a couple of things I'm not sure about....

For me personally I usually don't watch one of your DVDs right through in one go as they are very long and I don't get that much free time to just sit and watch one. For that reason the 1 day rental is not really long enough. I usually take about a week to fully watch one of your DVDs, sometime longer.
However the 30 day pass seems a bit expensive given that you cannot keep the program at the end to watch again in the future. At $30/£19 that's only about £3 less than one of your DVDs brand new from my local aviation shop.

Not exactly EMA747...
Take the AIR DO B767 DVD... New that DVD would indeed be $30
If you rent if for a day now its only $5.95 (thats 80% less than buying it new)
If you rent if for a month its only $9.95 (thats 66% less than buying it new)
but its actually not even relevant because those DVDs have been sold out for 5 or more years so they're not available to be purchased and will never become available again...

This also means that we can make available again more than 100 programs that were only released on VHS and never on DVD meaning you can see programs such as the Lufthansa, Air Malta or our very first cockpit featuring Carnival Air Lines B727 so the library of what you can see is going to be incredible! Remember we;ve filmed more than 220 airlines.

Now I've had a second look I was totally wrong on the price. On the list view http://www.worldairroutes.com/List.html it just says Rent Now and $30 above it so that's what I thought the price was. D'oh.

Just a suggestion buy maybe you could just not put the price in list view as some other people might make my mistake if they are just browsing and don't click on it to open it.

I've been after Air Do so I migth very well rent it for $9.95.

The next release which is planned for next week Friday will be a Flight in the Cockpit program thats being re-released on DVD. Been about 15 years since it was filmed and it was a good one so looking forward to making that available again after being sold out for more than 10 years...

After that we will be releasing a new program with an airline already in the series. I'm extremely excited about this one... The crew was just fantastic and explained more than ever including lots of things we had never really heard before... This program is now with the airline for approvals and if all goes according to plan that will be released in July after we take a short break.

And currently in production is the 225th airline to join the series! Also looking like a great program with wonderful crews and very interesting destinations...

Things may be a bit quieter than in previous years but we've chosen a new path... and that is to produce the really interesting programs rather than just releasing new DVDs all the time so we are picking and choosing what we film these days and you will see that in whats coming out...

Anyway what I forgot to mention is that tomorrow we will add a 6th title to our Rental section which is going really well and the 2-3 month test period is over and we've decided to continue offering and expanding that service with more sold out titles planned for rental in the future.
So if you hear of another title that's about to sell out on our website (as will be the case tomorrow as well) make sure to buy it if you don't want to miss it because any title that sells out from now on will not be re-released.

Have a nice day and "Fathers Day" but that may only be in the US... not sure

Yes the Challenge 707 is currently on DVD and I would be very surprised if the 757 doesn't make it to DVD one day. That was an awesome crew and if nothing else the approach and landing in La Paz with the crew on oxygen masks would make that program worth it!!

This is a good one for those of you who do not have this in VCR already. I still get a kick when I hear Roy doing his voice over duties. kind of miss that to be honest.

Yes, you get both programs on 1 DVD so cost of DVD is half of what 2 VHS would have cost 15 years ago... not bad!

Yes on the one hand I agree with you... On the other hand I find the same voice on all programs very boring... I enjoy listening to all the different pilots doing the talk in their own way, own words... and if this next program we're working on is approved by the airline we may have one of the funniest crews out there!

JP when will we have more details on the next release? From what you posted above it sounds good.

Just back from a trip to Iceland with Icelandair and rewatching your DVD of that airline. It's great to rewatch your DVDs once you have to a place like that and can place some of the stunning scenery, especially around Keflavik and Reykjavik.

Working on an Airport DVD sale for this weekend and 2 more sold Airport programs that will be available for online rental... Once thats done we can start talking about next weeks release.
I am indeed very excited about the title and the pilots. Hopefully we will be able to convey that with some You Tube clips...

Thats cool indeed... My personal aim now is to have featured 1000 Airports in the series. We're over 800 already so well on our way...

From Facebook.

Clue 1) Airline already featured before.
Clue 2) Aircraft type featured with half dozen airlines.
Clue 3) Shortest flight is 35mins.
Clue 4) Longest flight is 10h44mins.

I have no idea what it is right now.

Is it just one AC type or are the shortest and longest flights on different types?

I just watched the youtube clip and I can't wait to see this one. The Iberia Captain looks like such a cool guy. High fives with the F/O made me laugh out loud. I really like it when crews are professional but also have a funny side as well. This guy seems totally down to earth. Just like an SK Captain I met last year who was the type of guys that made me feel very welcome when I went up to the cockpit pre-flight. He even said it would be cool to go for a beer an talk aviation! He would have let me jumpseat too if we weren't going to LHR.

Crews like the Iberia A340 one are a real asset to the company and also the link up with JP. I have never really been an Iberia fan but after seeing just the clip I would certianly choose to fly then long-haul and if he was the Captain I would feel totally in safe hands. I felt the same after seeing Captain Tommy Frick on the Swiss MD11 DVD.

Totally! I've been extremely excited since the week we filmed this program 10 months ago and it came out exactly as I had hoped... Tons of information by a fantastic trio of pilots, some great flying like the approach in Quito and landing in Madrid, one of the most fun crews we've filmed and some bonus filming in Quito...

Iberia has been fantastic! The pilots for our filmings were handpicked.
We had the airline's Vice President of Flight Operations on the A340-600 program and A340 Fleet Manager for the A340-300. No complaints there, they both did wonderful. This latest crew on the A340-300 was just amazing and funny. You just don't get that in a cockpit.
The response has been phenomenal... just check the comments on You Tube... and we sold 10% of the run overnight after its release... No one will complain about spending 4 hours with this crew... and I agree Tommy Frick on the Swiss MD11 was amazing too but over the years we've had many Captains who really went beyond the call of duty to make sure our viewers were more than well informed... The SAS B737-600 Captain in our recent SAS DVD comes to mind, The Oasis Hong Kong crews, the many Sabena crews, the Air Canada pilots, the Kingfisher Captain, the Westjet guys, all the Austrian pilots, the many pilots all over Brazil etc etc etc... I'm sure I left a bunch of them out...

Air Moldova
Air Lithuania

- I guess there is little chance we will see Lufthansa or Turkish in the series again.
Lufthansa
Turkish Airlines

Channel Express - I see them at EMA sometimes.

Crossair - Good variety of types on shorthaul routes.

If I had to pick just one it would have to be the Air Georgia Tu154. These old Russian types are just so exotic and kind of mysterious to those of us used to Western cockpits and operating procedures.

The Tu-154 had 5 pilots in the cockpit leaving pretty much no room to do any decent filming unfortunately...

Hi!

I never knew that there was a thread for Just Planes here. I just got the AUA B772, AUA A332 and the Westjet B737 dvds, I think I have close to 25 Just Planes programs now.

I would love to see programs that concentrate on specific elements of flights and airlines. For example, a program that highlights the entire flight prep phase including the usual flight dispatch briefing, baggage loading, catering, cabin prep by the groomers and F/A's and the boarding of passengers. I really enjoyed the Oasis B747 and the SAA A346 programs because they really gave the viewer a great view of what happens behind the scenes.

Having said that, I would love to see a BA 747 or a KL B747/777 program!

I have a VHS copy of the Malev B767/737 WAR pogram, I would love to see that remastered.

Thanks,

Kristof

I believe the new Iberia A343 one has lots of this type of footage too but I have not watched this DVD yet.

The Swiss MD-11 is one of, if not my favorite DVDs. I really enjoyed the flight dispatch/weather briefing and the planning around the possible fuel stop. My favorite part had to be when the Captain was reviewing the ATIS information from the flight deck.

The Iberia A343 DVD will be my next purchase!

I guess the UK has much stricter regulations? I remember that the Qatari A330 video featured LHR,

Welcome aboard as well. I do not know what the regulations are with reguard to filming in a "foragn cockpit" but filming in a British registard plane i guess is very tough

JP, any information on future cooperation with Air Canada? The B767 program is my all-time favorite so far. I just love programs featuring big carriers! I think an AC A320, Embraer or 77L program would be an excellent addition to the series – as would be the 787 once it joins their fleet, as the FO on the flight to SCL mentioned.

PS: Will you upgrade your camera equipment some time? I have seen a couple of pilot's eye videos and the quality of those was just so stunning...

While I would love to discuss future projects I really can't for a variety of reasons however I can say that Air Canada is delighted with out work and I would not be surprised if there was more to come...

And as far as the equipment upgrade... Yes it has been upgraded a few months ago and you should be seeing the 1st program filmed with the HD cameras in a few months... On average it takes us a solid 6 months between filming and release.

Would love to produce Blue Ray and we have the technology at this time however there is no sufficient demand....
We've been checking this about every 4 months and its not there yet... which is a bit surprising but I can promise you as soon as the demand is there we will be going there...

One little comment about High Definition... Today we film in High Definition to be ready if the market goes to Blue Ray... DVDs are not released in High Definition, that format was discontinued a while back...
The only advantage you get is that the DVDs will be Widescreen.. but they are still released in Standard Definition...

I'm going to guess Oman Air A333. Their flights from Oman to KUL/BKK and Oman to CDG/LHR must both be about 8 hours.

My second guess would be KLM 772ER

From the various sources that produce DVDs/Blue Rays in general...
The only Blue Rays being produced are movies but no other kinds of programs like ours or any other subject than airplanes.. It is very concerning that that hasn't started yet and could be an indication it just will never happen...

When DVDs started things were a lot quicker to happen and we switched to DVDs quickly....
We would love to make Blue Rays right now and we could however the cost that we would have to pay in various licensing fees would make them a lot more expensive than the $30 DVDs we sell so that wouldn't work...
The fact that this pricing hasn't come down too much is an indication that this may just be for the movie houses to release movies on Blue Ray...

Its also based on the sale on Blue Ray players... which is nowhere near what the sale of DVD players was when that format was introduced or had been introduced for a while...

I agree with JP about the market not really being there at the moment for Blur Ray. I don't own a BR player and I don't intend to buy one anytime soon either. The main issue would be price increase. I think JP DVDs are an acceptable price at the moment, especially from a relatively low production rate company compared to big name film producers who can get the price down to around £10-15 per film. If JP were to increase the price from the current £22ish in the UK to more like £40 then I would have to think twice about buying them even thought I love the series.

Widescreen would be very nice though.

JP - I asked you before about equipment and I understand you not wanting to give away your secrets but have you ever considered filming the cockpit shots on current DSLRs?

Traintapes releases BD-Rs... same as DVD-Rs.
The R stands for Rewritable and they just run them on their computers at home...
Turn your DVDs around, if they look Gold they're real... if they look purple they're DVD-Rs
Too many problems with that sort of stuff when you distribute them all over the world..
We just go for the professionally printed DVDs...
And we sell a 2 hour program for $25, Traintapes wants $35 for the BD-R...
Thats not a solution for us I'm afraid

Pilotseye releases 2 programs a year...
If we released 2 programs a year we would offer them on DVD and Blue Ray as well but we release 20 programs a year.
Not a solution either unfortunately

Here is where I don't understand. They are smaller and even more niche than you yet they are able to offer bluerays and surely as they continue to do so they must find buyers for it. At EUR 30, I think I'm going to get one.

As SQ dont allow filming, but AC is happy to.

Same here--I'd love to see the 772 to HKG! Would also like to see AC's shorter-haul aspect in the 319/320/321 fleet and as you know Just Planes, I already even suggested a perfect host captain for the job who's more than willing to do it!

Enjoyed the A346 presentation of Iberia and am going to watch the A343 presentation next week while I am traveling (unfortunately not by plane). Will send comments for both at the same time.

Will look forward to the SAS A330 program as well as a few others in the next few months...

Anyone who has the AC programs and wants more should take a few minutes to send in comments about these programs. The airline does notice such things and that helps us negotiate further programs... so if you haven't send in your comments, they would be much appreciated...

I'll try to send in a comment about the 767 flights as soon as I got time... I'm still very impressed with this production. The crews were perfect, and the destinations, SCL/EZE, couldn't have been chosen better.

PS: Now that you fly to the US again (SAS A330 to EWR), I wonder if a production with US carriers is still a distant prospect?
