Hi Justplanes,

One question about the AC 319/321 DVD, which looks fantastic by the way! I watched the preview on youtube, during the A321 flight, the Captain pointed out Cape Canaveral and said that the last shuttle mission was launched just last week, how is that possible? Did you guys record, produce and release the AC DVD within a few days? The last space shuttle was launched on July 8th and your video came out on July 15th. I'm just curious.

Thanks,

KrisYYZ

I noticed this little detail too in the preview. I am sure JustPlanes will be able to fill you in but I suspected that it was a case of the crew knew that the Space Shuttles were launched from there and that the last mission was scheduled doonish. So the Captain just said that the last mission had been flown. I have seen that in TV programmes here in the UK where a programme is recorded before an event but goes out after it and the presenter or whoever just say it has already happened to keep up with the times.

That's a good point. I never thought about that possibility.

Hey guys,
That was a good observation/question!
I believe that what the Captain meant is that it was just after the final flight of Discovery... It looks like we passed the area just over a week after that flight lifted off...

J P, you said on face book that the cost of producing the new Eastern DC7 was 60% higher than normal costs. Just curious about that. Why is this more costly than other DVDs? Also you mentioned about a DC3 in the Caribean. I have been on board Just planes site for a long time now and do not remember seeing that one offered.

Part of the reason of the Eastern being so expensive is that we paid to film... we normally don't do that.... we also paid so that the plane would make a special takeoff and landing in St Maarten for us to capture it from the beach... so it was a big gamble on our part because we didn't know how well it would sell... Things like the Buffalo DC-4 and Everts DC-6 are selling really well but not enough to justify spending what we did on Eastern... In any case judging from the sales of the first 2 days Eastern is an absolute hit so we def made the right call...

DC-3 in the Caribbean was a VHS we released maybe 18 years ago. It was filmed on Four Star and was a fantastic documentary on the aircraft and operation... a 3 man film crew had spent a week capturing great images around the islands... Sales were very disappointing and we lost a ton of money on it...

That's odd,you would think they would allowed you to film them for free in order to garner as much publicity as possible....

The one thing I love about the series are the more exotic operations featured like russian aircraft , vintage freighters or bush plane operations. Its a shame more people aren't into that. I still say this is one of the most unique programs that jp has done...

The MALEV program looks great! I have the original VHS program but I will grab the new DVD because of the new footage. Based on the preview, it look like JP enhanced the 767 footage too. I'm very excited about this, I've been hoping to see the MA program re-release in DVD format for years!

I totally agree with you and thats why we do those knowing that most of these will be a loss but it makes the series more complete and interesting...

This Friday we have no release... instead we'll have a Columbus Day sale..
Next Friday we should have 2 DVDs coming out, a release that was previously on video and a re-release of a sold out DVD..
and the plan for the Friday thereafter is for the release of a new program.
No new type planned at this time...

Regarding the AC772LR I know it's widescreen and I'm assuming it's HD and not Blu-ray. I raced through a few of the comments above, but it's not clear to me.

I've enjoyed hours of watching the many Just Planes DVDs I know, but unfortunately with the widescreen TVs viewing is just not the same. Are all future Just Planes DVDs going to be in Widescreen format (or possibly even blu-ray).

Yes I confirm, all the newly filmed DVDs will be widescreen... anything that was filmed prior 2010 when we switched to HD and that is still going to be released in the future will be full screen. We have a number of programs that were never released and that are being considered for release, those would indeed be full screen... we also have a number of videos that we're considering re-releasing on DVD and that would be the same...

I got the latest AC 77L video (YYZ-HKG) in standard format; I always get mine at the aviation shop at Manchester Airport, on the way to/from home (Dublin). I have to say I enjoyed it immensely.

A four hour aviation video can be quite "dry" (i.e wall to wall technical info), but the AC crew and particularly Capt. Allen made it a pleasure to watch. I am really glad that JP has such a good relationship with AC and as Capt. Allen hinted, hopefully we'll be seeing the 787 featuring in the future. I guess my only wish would be that you could go back in a time warp and feature some old AC types - DC8s, L1011s, 747 Classics, Vanguards etc!

I often feel that one of the great advantages of this videos is often overlooked - the historical value; in years to come when a Canadian youngster asked his retired AC pilot grandfather, "what was it like to fly A330s/787s etc", they'll have these videos/DVDs.

One question I have is about the crews' careers: the Quebecois FO mentioned that he had served as a Embraer jet captain for two years, before going back to being an FO (and a relief FO, at that) on the 777; this seems somewhat unusual. Also, it seems unusual that they have relief FOs only on the 777, if I understood correctly. This suggests that he just flies as a relief FO, not alternating (as most carriers do); anyone know why AC does it this way?

Glad you enjoyed the new Air Canada DVD kaitak!
If you have a minute to email us those comments for our website that would be great!
info@justplanes.com

You are right about the historic value of these DVDs.
Already we have aircraft that are pretty much no longer in service... and airlines that don't exist anymore...

As far as your question.
Sometimes pilots will go for the right seat on a larger aircraft over the left seat in a smaller one.
In the case of this F/O, he does 1 roundtrip YYZ to HKG and logs more than 30 hours...
He might have to do 10-20 flights on the Embraer to get to 30 hours and may prefer the other..
Perhaps someone else has more inside into all this...
