And next Friday will have a very excitement announcement!!

As much as I'd like this to be a program featuring a US carrier, it sounds interesting anyway. Maybe you can share some clues what it could be?

Absolutely... Clues coming after the weekend...
While I am excited about the DVD being released I am more excited for the other announcement that will be made. It is basically a new price line that will be introduced for certain titles making them more accessible to more people...

My guess is the Ecuadorian TAMÉ. They have a couple of short flights from UIO and possibly GYE as well.

Furthermore, I'm a tad disappointed it's not a North American carrier.   But I realize it wasn't likely to be one either.
Just wondering, is there any chance you'll have a production featuring ATL in the future? Having flown into that airport so often, I have become really curious what operations look like from the cockpit – irregardless if it's he one of a passenger or cargo aircraft.

We currently have 2 DVDs with flights into Atlanta...

1) ATLAS AIR Boeing 747
The flight is from Dallas Ft Worth to Atlanta

2) POLAR AIR Boeing 747
The flight is from New York JFK to Atlanta and from Atlanta to Prestwick

LAN Cargo would be amazing. Their 77Fs and 767Fs look great. I'm not sure if LAN Cargo would really be classed as a new airline as JP have already done LAN.

I am wondering about MTA Cargo with their DC-10Fs. I have no idea of their routes and if they have a 32 minute flight.

JP I just read the announcement about the new prices on your facebook page. Hope you don't mind me putting it up here.

"New $20 price in the Cockpit series!
Tomorrow's new DVD will be released at $20 and we will be lowering the price of more than 25 other DVDs to $20.
With this we're trying to make some of the less popular titles available to more viewers. Many of these titles are as or more interesting than most would think."

One question I have about this is will the discounted rates be reflected in UK shops or is it just for DVDs purchased directly from your website?

The new DVD sound interesting. Old plane + cargo so it must be interesting.

A far cry from the LAN Cargo 77F that I hoped it would be. Not my kind of plane, but it looks interesting nonethless. I'm sure there are plenty of enthusiasts who appreciate this production.

When we looked at which European Airport to feature we looked at the LON, FRA, AMS... and then someone said CDG and I said... hm don't think its the best choice... well I was very wrong... During the week we filmed there was so much traffic we ran out of tapes.. no kidding! More than 125 Airlines and many of them bring in more than 1 type of Aircraft.
A ton of widebodies from all over the world... Some good A380 action... a TON of 777s and a good amount of A330/A340s... so going there was a very wise decision for sure!

Just had a bit of bad luck

Popped in my United 777 DVD into my DVD player and it would not play. Then put it in my computer and it said "cannot read disc"
Same on 2 other computers and another dvd player.

Used to watch it over and over, then put it away for a year or so.
By chance I luckily had 2 copies and opened the sealed one and it plays fine.

Really hope no others in the collection dont play anymore.

All my DVD's are stored in a proper manner and I can see no defects on the disc surface.
The United one is quite a few years old

Anyone else have similar problems?

About Blu Rays.

Before you rush into buying them make sure they are professionally produced and not something that was burned at home... BD-Rs are the kind you buy in a store just like DVD-Rs and you burn at home... We've never released anything on anything other than real DVDs, no DVD-Rs and we're not about to release BD-Rs that will lead to problems on some players...

When VHS started becoming DVD the market was ready and we quickly switched to DVD.. Right now the market is nowhere near being ready for Blu Ray and its looking more and more like Blu Ray, just like the HD DVD, will not become the format of the future... but time will tell...

Well it is possible that Europe is different than North America... Here there isn't a single producer of any sort of documentary.. not just aviation... that releases their titles on Blu Rays...
I know of 1 that does trains but they're also on rewritable Blu Rays...
As far as I've seen in Europe (aviationwise) there is only 1 company in Germany that releases their titles on Blu Rays... others may be offering BD-Rs... which means they buy a Blu Ray at the store and write them at home on their computer... not exactly the way we want to go if we ever release Blu Rays... Just like with our DVDs we would want them professionally authored (so as to have them playing without problems on all players all over the world) and we would have them printed in a company that does just that.
This will happen if and when the market is ready for it and the cost is right... Right now we would have to release a Blu Ray 25-30% more expensive than a DVD and other than maybe 4 or 5 people I don't think anyone would want to pay more...

The good news though is that a few months ago we upgraded our equipment to HD so anything that's been filmed since then is in the format that makes it possible to release Blu Rays if that becomes possible in the future...

We have had the Blue Ray debate in the other thread and I still agree with what JP is saying. In Europe BR is quite popular but with big film titles rather than small time productions.
JP's DVDs are about £23 in the UK and that is a LOT more than even a current hollywood blockbuster film. I don't mind one bit paying the £23 as I know JP is a small company and I don't mind giving my support. Plus the DVDs are much more interesting that most films! However if JP's DVDs went up by 25-30% I don't think I would be able to afford them even if I wanted to.

I think the next logical step is 16:9 widescreen DVDs. I really hope JP you can produce some of these in the future. A lot of the other aviation DVD producers seem to say they are filmed in HD (and I'm sure they are) but they can't be rendered in HD as they are still on standard DVDs but their programs are similar length to JPs. As far as I am aware you can't get much more than about 5-10 minutes of full 16:9 1080 quality footage on a standard DVD disc.

From my point of view I think for JP to go Blue Ray would price most of the market out and lose them a lot of customers, but to widescreen might well gain them a few customers. At the end of the day though JP know what they are doing and know the markets better than any of us!

Thanks Andy, you are VERY accurate in everything you say in your post!
Widescreen is just a few weeks away by the way... We upgraded our equipment a few months ago and are filming HD.
The 1st release is HOT too! Its not an A380 but its a fantastic airline, a great aircraft and a very interesting route!

The Blu Rays are just not becoming reality because of the mastering, replication and licensing fees.
It would be doable if everyone had Blu Rays but with only 5-10% owning them now its not practical or we would have to sell then for $40 or more...
There is the rewritable Blu Ray.... but
DVD-Rs experienced big compatibility issues in the first few years and BD-Rs will likely go through the same...
Maybe today DVD-Rs are more stable thanks to many improvements... I'm told that BD-Rs will likely go through the same issues... and I mean if you're going to spend 30 bucks on a program, do you really want something that is made in someone's living room?

So as far as the real Blu Rays go I see only 1 company in the world releasing Aviation titles... and they can do so because they release 2 titles a year... If we did 2 titles a year we would offer Blu Ray now but our audience has grown accustomed to about 20 titles a year and we would like to stick to that...

Everything we've done over the past 20 years has been calculated and for a reason..
We've always looked out for our customers in every aspect... be it quality, price and variety of programming...

You know over the past 20 years I can give you a long list of companies and people who have come out with BIGGER and BETTER than Just Planes.... Where are they all today? I guess people don't want Bigger and Better than Just Planes... they just want Just Planes   and I want to thank all those who continue to support us throughout the world. October 2010 was a record month for us and that is going to help us release more great programs for another 20 years.

Exactly Simon, that is why we don't want to offer Blu Ray unless they will be sold at the same price our DVDs were and are being sold (and I don't mean the re-writeable ones)...
The industry (in this country at least) is keeping the pricing at a high enough level so as to only be available to motion picture and TV... which is weird because you would think Sony would want everyone owning a Blu Ray player and buying Blu Rays but today that is not the case at all...
Unlike DVDs which quickly took over for VHS in stores, Blu Rays are still limited to 1 aisle and the rest is all DVDs..

I also think that part of this may be caused by the fact that more and more is downloadable online and it may well be that that is where the future is... I'm personally not a fan of it but unfortunately I'm not the one deciding where the world of video is going... in time we shall see... and Just Planes will follow but for now I'd say enjoy the DVDs and wait for Friday's announcement which will further raise the quality...

No its not 777guy...
As a matter of fact as we just completed our 1st HD/Widescreen program we designed a new flight graphic that looks really cool and will be used for those new programs and has all the details. I believe it includes the aircraft, registration, flt nbr and route.

The main reason I like the graphics is my lack of memory and usually watch at night so it is inconvenient to turn on light and see what is next. I also miss seeing various key points along the flight's route like airports and special scenery not being included on the graphics. That would be nice to see again.

I second that. It's not a big deal either way but it was quite nice when it was included. It helps with keeping up with where that flight has got to as you are watching it. More interesting on long-haul routes imo.

You are totally right about that, so do I...
More and more we try to get the pilots to talk about the places we overfly but if they don't and are over a place we actually recognize we will make sure to include a title. Our new editing suite makes these things a lot easier now...
With our 1st widescreen release we have a new graphic for each flight which I think you will like, we also have a new opening, when I saw it a week or so ago I cracked up and couldn't stop laughing...
Whats really funny is that the opening animation was created by our authoring guy (a non aviation person) and the sound he used for the plane is actually of the same plane on the DVD... that cracked me up even more

Anyway we've taken an extra week to really bring out the best quality in the authoring process and transfer of High Definition footage so that you all will be very happy. We're getting one final viewing on Friday and then its off to the presses...

Wishing those in the US a Happy Thanksgiving... and make sure to visit us for 3 really incredible sales!

Hello Andy,
We were supposed to have a re-release from VHS to DVD tomorrow but we have to delay it by a week because our warehouse is completely backlogged from the orders received for last weekends sale... and our new sale starts tomorrow so we'll be busy with that for another week...
So that DVD is now due Friday, Dec 10th.
We may have something after that but we have to see how things develop...
Don't want to release something if we can't ship in a timely manner, specially before Christmas...
Stay tuned to the website and facebook for updates... and clues off course
Have a lovely weekend!

Thanks for the update JP. I am interesting in the VHS to DVD releases and there are a few I really hope make it to DVD.

Hope you have a great weekend too. We have quite a bit of snow in the UK at the moment so I'l' go out and enjoy that this weekend.

We will bring back a number of VHS programs released from 1991 to 2002... a lot of those have a historic value that we want to maintain and so far the ones we've brought back are selling very well so the demand is def there...

JP - Just had a look at the sale DVDs are there are some great deals on some DVDs I have not seen. I have a few questions though about shipping to the UK.

1) It says on the website "New customers may be limited to 3 dvds" It also says minimum order $20 for the sale. This could be an issue as I already have my eye on at least 4 sale DVDs.

2) Any idea how much (if any) import duty to the UK would be? I've checked the UK import pages and the info there is complicated to say the very least!

3) Would I need to go through some sort of verification process as I have not made an order directly from your website before? I doubt if I'd get the DVDs before Christmas now though.

1) Don't worry about that, you will be fine
2) I think most people don't pay duties... its only on occasion that they charge from what I hear from customers but I really don't have much information about that one... but judging from the number of orders we ship to the UK every day I'm sure it can't be bad...
3) No you're all set, just place the order on our website... If you order soon you have a good shot at getting them before Christmas but nothing is for sure off course...

Hi,

I have a few JPV DVD's and initially thought they were great.

Now I have bought a few other brands which I thouroughly enjoy.
So, maybe there are others out there which I don't know about.

So far I have bought
Just Planes - World air routes
Viking aviation photo - Flight deck action
AeroPresentation
pilotseye

Only JPV is filming in the old standard, and the quality is so much better on the other 3 brands.

Have I missed something ? Are there any other cockpit DVD's available ?

Steve

Hey Steve,

You are right, we have been filming in the old standard.. but only 1 of the companies you mention up there is filming in the new standard and releasing it in the new standard and thats Pilotseye.. so if you want the absolute best in quality than thats what you need to buy...

Filming in High Definition but releasing in Standard Definition really does not improve anything.

In fact a customer reported to me that he thought our old standard DVDs had a better quality than their new standard filming and that that was actually noticeable on their and our You Tube clips... I checked it out and kinda have to agree.

In any case 6 months ago we started filming in the new standard and will be releasing our 1st program soon... a nice improvement with that is that its widescreen now... but the new High Definition filming really does not improve the old Standard Definition... its just a sales pitch to try to sell some DVDs...

I think there is a bit of confusion over what HD is in reality. When something is filmed in HD it doesn't mean the end product is HD. HD's big drawback is that it takes up massive amounts of disc space on the finished DVD. The only format where you can get over about 30 minutes of HD footage on is Blue Ray. Standard 4.7 GB DVDs will only hold maybe 15 minutes of full 1080 HD footage. Most DVDs that are filmed in HD are downconverted to SD for use on a standard DVD. Things filmed in this way on modern cameras can look amazing in quality on SD DVDs. All I say is don't get too hung up on the whole HD tag.

Thank you Andy. That is 100% correct!
Filmed in HD, which we are now doing, means absolutely nothing if it is released on a DVD because DVDs are not HD unless as you point out they are limited to 15 minutes which they are not.
Its like saying I'm buying a Porsche that can go 200 miles an hour.. but I'm limited to 65 on the roads.
HD DVDs did exist for a short while but the format failed and is gone. Kinda too bad if you ask me because Blu Ray has not come down to the price where it can be sold at a good price in a niche market like ours...

Quoting EMA747 (Reply 55):

Again thank you Andy...
I have never in any other area than aviation seen anyone say filmed in HD... Its a ridiculous statement meant to convince people to buy something... Sadly we will now have to say that too so people don't get lost in this... Best example. : Tyku. With all due respect he does highlight one of Andy's quotes but he forgets to include the other part which correctly states that HD would be limited to 15 minutes on a DVD... so anything longer than that is simply not HD..

One thing I have noticed is that just planes DVDs look great when viewed on an old tube TV but more grainy on an HDTV.

I hope that newer hd cameras will fix that.

Just out of curiosity jp what hd cameras will you use ? Will they be common camcorders like the Canon Vixia series or something more high end ?

The bottom line as far as I am concerned is enjoying the best quality at the most reasonable price. I for one would not expect J P to risk the viability of his company by trying technology that he is personally not comfortable with.

It is really neat to be able to dig into 20 years of programs and re-release old stuff, specially defunct airlines and/or types of aircraft that these airlines are no longer using... and judging from sales on the 1st weekend its something we will be continuing with more of those releases in 2011...

And yes, believe it or not, we do listen to our customers and their suggestions. While we obviously can't incorporate everything over the years we've added and done things that many have requested and will continue to do so.

Right.. normally that order would have been out Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest... it went on Friday... from there on it is in the hands of the post office so totally impossible to guess.. some in the UK get them in days some in weeks... and I would think that this time of the year they also have some extra mail.. so there is no science at all with this. Thank you for keeping on producing these Air Canada programs. Ever since I saw the preview of the B777-300/ER I knew I was going to buy this one sooner or later, since the crew members on this flight seem to be real class acts and the route choice (Germany included   ) is very wise. In the long run, I am going to possess all AC programs, last but not least because I learn a lot about flying from them. I appreciate that essentially all important crossings, that is the Andes, the Atlantic, the Pacific to Asia and Australia from the North American continent will be covered. Some day I will have to book a flight on Air Canada myself – perhaps from FRA to YYZ?

PS: Of course I will try to solve the trivia question.

Indeed, Air Canada has been nothing but a class act with us since the 1st day we started filming with them on the Boeing 767. The good thing is they have a nice fleet and great route network so with a bit of chance there is some more work there for us... and off course Germany is often included in the series, our main Director is from Germany so anytime he can feature the series in his country he does... and that is also why we've already filmed something like 10 airlines in Germany along with more in Austria and Switzerland... and a number of them with a German version.
Enjoy the 777-300ER!

I got the AC B777-300/ER program for Christmas. Once more, as expected, I think it is an excellent addition to the series. The crew members are superb and focus very much on the technical aspects of the aircraft, which is exactly what I wanted. The newly-released -200/LR program is certainly on the top of my wish list now, much more so as the quality in the preview video is amazing.

I want to give full credit to the Air Canada crews! Pilots make a program as is clear in this one.. You have 6 pilots, all eager to give information about what is going on and how that machine works.
The cabin crew was equally nice and fun as you can see on the trailer.

Hopefully it will stand you in good stead when the 787 comes along! I think it will also cut both ways, because obviously it's good to get a "blue chip" airline like AC, but also, it works for them too; the productions you have done for the 767, 77W and 77L are now part of AC's own history, so if people in 20 or 30 years' time want to know what it was like to fly AC's 767s, you've provided that. Also, when they are introducing a new type (particularly one they've been awaiting for more than a little time!), they will know that there is a company willing and able to do a good job in presenting their newest type; hopefully, they will come to you! And hopefully others will too.

Maybe Austral or AF might be willing to work with you on the 380!

I see the B787 is scheduled to enter service with Air Canada in 2013 (might be later). Now that almost the entire longhaul fleet except for the A330 is covered (regrettably, the airline no longer uses the A340), I wouldn't be surprised to see a shift towards the shorthaul fleet (E-Jets, A32S). Lots of interesting destinations on these as well.

I agree... its good for both to document this for history...
We recently released the Citybird B767 & MD11 and obviously Citybird can't be compared to Air Canada yet its selling incredibly well because there is nothing out there to remember this Belgian airline. If we had started AC a lot earlier we would have the 747 to remember.
Keep in mind Air Canada also uses our DVDs for pilot training so its more than just document aircraft and flights for history...

Now on the 787... It would be lovely to see this airplane in service. I'm a bit concerned though and wonder how things are moving along but hopefully Boeing will figure everything out and the airline will start taking delivery soon.
I believe Air Canada has 37 B787s on order... From the numbers it looks like they're replacing the B767s at first and maybe A330 in the end.. but with that number on order I expect they will be placed into service on routes all around the world.

You are right, it would have been nice to have an Air Canada A340 program...
We do have 2 programs filmed on ex-Air Canada A340s though
We filmed C-FTNP with BWIA as 9Y-TJN.
We filmed C-FYLC with LAN as CC-CQG.

not sure if your willing to give this information up. But I order the AC 77W and 77L videos yesterday and curious if you reached the 100 order cap yet? Would love to get my order possibly by this weekend rather than next week.

Depends on your order number... but the 100 orders came in the day the DVD was released..
Right now orders 22587 through 22686 will ship on Dec 29th.
Order 22687 through 22900 will ship next week.
Hope this helps.
Thank you!!

Updating you... because of the number of orders received we opened the warehouse today as well... and looks like we'll be able to get 170 orders out tomorrow... so if all goes well 22587 through 22756 will ship on Wednesday 29th.

Well, you were photographed departing from Toronto.

So I'm happy to confirm that the 170 planned orders did make it out yesterday (22587 through 22756)... some in the US could be lucky enough to receive their order as early as tomorrow!
In addition, those that used Fedex for orders 22756 through 22900 were also lucky to get their orders shipped out.
Everything else will start moving again after the weekend.
Have a safe New Years Eve and a fabulous 2011!

Just finished watching this DVD earlier today, I must say its absolutly fantastic.... The only thing I would say that dissapointed me was in the 3 flights (YYZ-JAA, JAA-YYZ, YYZ-FRA) was that there was no walkaround shown. This is my 1st WAR DVD and dont get me wrong the lack of a walk around will not deter me from purchasing again but I would like to have seen one. 10 out of 10.

Glad you enjoyed the Air Canada 777-300ER. Its really been an honor to work with Air Canada and their Flight Operations people! The 1st review for the new 777-200LR was just posted on our website.
You're right, we normally try to get a walkaround and end up having them on probably 75% of the programs but in this case YYZ or NRT did not allow for that. Some airports are easier than others for doing a walkaround.

If anyone has comments about the Air Canada programs please email them to info@justplanes.com
It helps that the airline sees those.
Thanks very much!

Thanks for the wishes Andy, same to you and everyone on here for a great 2011!

Our UK distributor released the new Air Canada DVD on the same day we did (Dec 24th) so by now I would say its safe to assume its reached the usual retail locations.

I believe the Caravelles have been grouded for a while but not sure... yes the smoke coming out of just 1 of the 2 engines is pretty cool... and the rest of the program is too. Even though this program was 1st released 10 years ago today is the first time we added it on You Tube so you can see how exciting it really is... Check it out

Even though I posted a comment for the AC B772LR program, I wanted to express my thanks for producing such an interesting and high-quality program. My favorite parts were the SAT phone communication between the captain in SYD and the dispatcher in YYZ about the new flight plan, I found that to be particularly interesting. I also really enjoyed the cabin presentation, I was very impressed with the galley and service presentation in the SAS A330 program so I was very happy that Just Planes is continuing to cover the cabin and galley service in your new programs. I will have to watch the B777LR program a few times before everything sinks in as there is so much great information and details in the program.

However, I must say that I greatly missed the external inspection of the mighty 777. I noticed that none of the AC (763,773 and 772) programs included any external shots or pre-flight inspection. Does AC have a policy against filming outside?

Thanks,

Thanks very mich Kristof... The trio of Air Canada programs have been extremely well received, to say the least, and this new one on the 200LR is doing exceptionally well and comments from our viewers are more than positive...

About the walkarounds... They depend more on the airport than the airline. Toronto is not possible at this time and a place like Sydney wasn't either. Same problem at Narita. Smaller airports are easier to get clearance... but I'd say that 80% of our programs have walkarounds so we've been very lucky...

Unfortunately I do not have a list of programs we released. Over the years as we switched systems the list went away... Have a list of DVDs... I do have a list of all the flights we filmed but its so long and has so much information that its like a telephone book
I too make some discoveries I did not remember... such as recently the Air Contractors 727-200 program which is actually really good and should maybe make its way back to DVD one day... those birds are becoming very rare.

The Crossair is actually leaving our warehouse for London tonight so it should be there on Thursday... The 77L has been shipping over just about every week so there should be some there...

I went to the Ian Allan shop near Waterloo station http://www.ianallanpublishing.com/our-shops/ yesterday and just a heads up to anyone on here who might visit in the future they have a VERY limited selection of aviation DVDs and NO JP DVDs at all. I was a bit disappointed because their sister shop at BXH has loads and I've picked up a few rarer JP titles from there. The London shop is very interesting might you, just be aware of the above.

It could be a variety of reasons... but the most likely reason which was the case with ONE TWO GO as an example is we go film something and feel there is more needed to make a program.
As you know by now I'm not one to release a program with just a couple of flights just for the heck of releasing a DVD.. I want to make it worth your investment and give you guys as much as possible... so we'll say that we will go back and shoot some more... but with some airlines that hasn't happened.
Now that we've introduced $20 DVDs I don't feel as bad...
I would not have wanted to charge $30 for the 2hr One Two Go program but for $20 I think it was worth releasing it because it does include some neat footage, 2 flights on the 747-100, some destinations not previously covered in the series, etc... There are some more programs with in the same sort of situation so as soon as the studio here is free for me to spend time on those I will..

I see that Iran Air finally is re-released,

how on earth did you guys get permission to film there in the first place ?

It took a bit of time but wasn't that hard... Easier to film in Iran than it is in the UK...

it's probably worth mentioning that at least the following three DVDs are about to sell out!

PLUNA only 31 left in stock
SUN-AIR only 81 left in stock
Blue1 only 51 left in stock

as JP would say..get them fast before they're gone!

You are very observant
I have to tell you that we also have a stock that is used for shops and that is not included in the number you see in our online shop... so there could possibly be more available than are listed in our store... and on the other hand if the store numbers run out we may dip into whats in the online store so I wouldn't trust these numbers 100%...
We will however always do our best to give some notice when a title is about to sell out so those who really want it still have a chance to get it... but as with the Freedom Air yesterday, sometimes the number is small and they go really quickly...

Review was just added to our website Andy.
Thanks so much for taking the time to send it in...
I agree with you that Eznis Airways and Mongolia are a fantastic addition to the series. Most will never get to go fly there and this shows them what this country looks like.

Anyone else have a few minutes, please send in reviews for the programs you've seen..
Thank you!!

Hello Simon,
I am currently going through a bunch of the programs we've filmed since the early 90s.
So far the ones we have released are doing amazingly well so I am def planning many more...
Crossair is the latest one and I'm working on the next 3-4 as we speak... all the while working on some not previously released programs and the new ones filmed in High Def... so there is enough to keep me busy 36 hours a day
I will put the AOM A340 and MD83 programs in line for viewing to see if we can release one or both of these. I have to say that the program has been requested many times from people in France. AOM was a great airline... with a bit of luck the program will be back.
Cheers

Being able to see all the stuff we filmed during the past 20 years is very sweet! Like the Heavylift.. thats one cool airplane and nicely captured in this program too... I wonder if any are still in service... I doubt it and if they are its either 1 or 2 at the most...
We have more than enough things to bring back for at least a year if not longer and while we are filming a lot of new things, the past will play a big role in our future
Have a great weekend!

Heavylift is also very interesting. You have quite a few smaller props on DVD but it was interesting to see the massive Shorts Belfast. I highly recommend this DVD.

Thanks very much Andy.. I agree... while its amazing to be able to feature airlines like Air Canada, United and Iberia what makes our series is adventures like Silkway and HeavyLift. You embark on something and you sometimes don't know exactly where you end up... this is real aviation!

Hi Just Planes,

I know that you must be inundated with ideas for new programs. But I just want to say that I would love to see another Air Canada B772LR video on AC's YYZ-HKG polar flight. I remember that the Capt. on the YYZ-NRT (AC B773) flight briefly spoke about the special planning involved around polar flights and it seemed to be very interesting and extraordinary. Your Canadian North DVD did an awesome job of covering the true vs. magnetic compass ops so I bet seeing the equivalent of re-slaving the compasses on a brand new B777 would be very unique. Perhaps combining that with a short AC E195 hop to some Canadian or US city would be a hot seller.

I know that filming at airports can get very tricky and some major airports simply don't allow it. But do you think it would be possible to film the pre-flight preparations such as re-fueling, catering and the cabin crews work prior to passengers boarding? I don't know how others here feel about it, but I personally would love to see how refueling is done and how the ground crews turnaround a large jet.

Thanks,

KrisYYZ

Hello Simon,
Would be happy filming many airlines in the UK... but I guess its better not to even think about it... but I will give you a very early hint... and that is that our next High Def release will feature one fantastic flight into the UK! and not just any airport off course   so we take what we can get...

Excellent suggestion KrisYYZ!!
As a matter of fact we have been in talks with Air Canada about that particular Polar flight for a couple of months... Together we've been studying the possibility, the weather, the amount of light during the hours we would pass over the pole etc... While this is still a far shot from being done, if its ever done... I'm sure that if possible Air Canada will go for this so time will tell...
About the Airport preflight preparations... Some of our DVDs have shown re-fueling operations, it really all depends on which airport we are filming at... In general those things are very hard because on the one hand the cameraman is with the pilots filming the pre-flight and on the other hand he has many things to install in the cockpit and little time to do so... When we started the series in the 90s we would send a crew of 3 guys to do a shoot... one would be the main cameraman, the other would be an additional camera and the 3rd would take care of sound and other issues... Today we're limited to 1 and on a rare occasion we've been allowed 2 but its really only 1... and that 1 guy has to do the work of 2-3 people which makes anything on ground difficult to film...
I will however make a note that if this appears to be possible somewhere we will try to get that turnaround operation...
Thanks again for the great suggestion!

That sounds great as long as the Government as not imposed restrictions like the BWIA A-340 flight which for me ruined a very nice film.

Hello 777guy...
Had to check it out because there is so much going on here that I don't remember... but yes I confirm there are a dozen chapters on the ASTRA program and the graphics with flight info (Reg, Flt Nbr, Flt Time, Route) are on there except for the 1st flight. I couldnt find that one... Must be the guy who's doing the editing who screwed up...

This is something others will have to comment on... When I look at the Challenge 757 and compare it to the clips from today... the ones from today don't just look better... they look 100x better... but lets see what others think...

Forgot to answer this...
the CAC 757 and just about all Cockpits that were release in the Flight in the Cockpit series were filmed with Betacam SP cameras... Those 30-40lbs cameras... Back then they were considered good stuff but what we get in the cockpit today with the digital cameras is so far superior... and only weighs 5 or 10bs which makes them a lot steadier too...

I agree 100% with Justplanes! The picture quality by far is way better than the older releases. The current SD is much clearer and now with the introduction of HD there is no comparison. By the way I can't wait for the next HD release

Just wondering.. does anyone else find that when they navigate around the JPV website, a new browser tab/window is opened with every page change? Not sure if it's supposed to be this way but in all my years of web browsing I've never seen any other website do this, and for very good reason - it's quite irritating and unnecessary!

Hi Simon,
I can't answer exactly when... but I can say that its likely that all 4 Royal programs will make their way back at some point considering we've gotten more than 100 requests this year alone... so probably just a matter of time...

I see that the JP site no longer gives a schedule of upcoming programs; any idea when the next new program will be (particularly one featuring new aircraft types)?

Indeed.. when we had a release once or twice a month it was easier to predict what would be coming out.. now that we have something every week its harder to know what will come in from the plant and when so we prefer to just wait it out and make sure whats planned is actually in and ready to go before its announced... but we follow a trend for our 20th anniversary that includes something new, something re-released, something from Video every month etc...

I've not checked in with all you folks here for a while so just thought I'd say hi again.

JP - Some very nice DVDs being produces by yourselves at the moment. I can't wait to see the new IB widescreen one, especially the flight to Moscow!

I have been enjoying the TUI Fly 737 DVD this week. If anyone hasn't seen it I urge you to get a copy if only for the approach sequences to Venice alone. Man that was exciting! JP expect a review from me when I have watched the second half.

Yes indeed Andy... we lucked out with the TUIfly shoot by getting a missed approach, a very low vis landing and a lot more... U can never plan for these things but when they happen its a big bonus!

Our 4th widescreen will be here in 12 hours! and make sure to tune in next weekend as we celebrate our 20th birthday!

Thanks for the review Andy, looking forward to it!

Michel, I am curious why so many of the programs now are multi language. Is this a mandate of the various airlines or a selling point for WAR? I do not have a problem if they are translated in both languages but to be honest I wonder what is being said that I cannot understand. Personally I feel they should only be in the universal language of aviation which is English.

I actually agree with you and it would be a lot less work for us here if it was all in English...
I don't think there are any new programs that have other languages coming up but one never knows, maybe there will be a few more...

The German language programs were made for our importer in Germany who distributes them to shops all around the country. It more than doubled the sales of our programs in Germany, an important market for us.
The Spanish language programs were an agreement with Iberia... it meant us getting this airline...
The French language program was a thank you to Corsair for 10 years of wonderful cooperation..

Not sure if you noticed but on Corsairfly... the program is more than 3 hours long... so normally priced $30
however because the English version is only 2h15mins we're only charging you the 2hr price of $25.. so you're not paying anything extra or losing out anything as the entire english version is on there...

That's exactly the type of pilots I love to watch. From the youtube clip they seem very nice and good from the DVD.

JP On the issue of different languages - When there is a part not in English is it usually a cockpit presentation or some other announcement usually during the cruise? By that I mean is it not a part with scenery or an interesting phase of the flight? I understand a tiny bit of German and French so I would not really understand anything but would I see new things if I watch both the English and other languages on a given DVD? I fully understand why you do dual language and personally have no problem with it whatsoever.

On another topic, have you ever though about doing a blog to keep fans up to date and to promote your DVDs? I know you have the Facebook page but I'm really not a fan of the FB site myself. It would be really interesting to have some kind of "reports from filming" type pieces, maybe including some photos like the ones you have been putting up for the guessing game on FB. Just a thought anyway.

I've not finished the TUI DVD yet but I promise a review is on it's way as soon as I do!

To answer your question... no you're not missing anything in the English version.. The entire flight and all the key parts of it are shown with English as the language such as the Corsairfly 747-400 that was just released... If you look at the French version you will see that nothing happens during that time... Its just idle time when the crew is sitting talking about the flight, the route, the aircraft in French.
And on that note... this is our 20th Anniversary weekend celebration with $20 coupons on our facebook page as a way to thank you for 20 years of support! Enjoy them!

Thanks you very much! Indeed as you will see with this and the next few Widescreen/High Def programs that we've already completed, we've taken things to the next level including the use of up to 4-5 cameras in the cockpit when allowed by the airline amongst other improvements. Off course Air Canada is a fantastic airline to work with and their pilots really do a fantastic job presenting everything that can be said and done in the cockpit...

No doubt about that!   It's just that I have become a big fan of the E-Jets ever since I flew on one myself. Also, I recreate the flights in flight simulator, and shorter flights are more feasible than ultra long haul segments. Eventually I am planning to get all programs from the AC series, though.

I noticed that too. Personally I like a mix of DVDs with only a few flights in more detail and others with shorter flights but more of them. That way if I don't have much time to watch a DVD I can flight on one with more shorter flights.

There is no change in format planned however with Air Canada's fantastic pilots its hard to do more than 4 flights. They do so much that a 4 segment DVD like the new Embraer 190 turns out over 4 hours long and thats after some serious cutting... so if we did 6 flights we wouldn't know where to put the rest.. so expect a mix of some DVDs with less flights but lots of pilot interaction instead and others with more flights... and as far as cabin, they're not going away, I know there is 1 in HD nbr 8 I believe but as you can imagine those are not easy to coordinate because of full flights, because desired window seating isn't available and/or because some airlines simply don't want anyone filming in the cabin... but when possible and if we're done with all we wanted in the cockpit we will certainly try to include a cabin flight.

Very glad you got the order this quickly... its really out of our hands most of the time and in those of the post office (unless its UPS or Fedex)... Hope you enjoy the DVD... make sure to send some comments if you have a moment, Air Canada reads them and its important to them to see what people think of their and our work. Thanks!!

I received my copy of the AC Embraer 190 program on Friday, hardly 6 days after I had placed my order for it. Fast shipment - satisfied customer.

I think you could not have chosen a better Captain for a production of this kind. I was amazed by Jeff Lewis' enthusiasm and professionalism in bringing the Embraer closer to the audience. Also, I found that he has a great sense of humour, and I chuckled at quite a few of his comments along the flights. Of course, the two F/Os acted highly professional as well.

As for the destination choice, it could not have been better as well in my opinion. I was excited when I saw that GGT would be one of them, as I had flown in there in the flight simulator about two years ago. It was interesting to see how arrivals and departures are handled there in real world, though - like the pilot of a presumably small aircraft coming on the radio and asking the AC pilots what direction their aircraft was coming in from. The flight into Havana -an aviation museum, according to the Captain- was worth seeing as well.

Well done justplanes. I really like this production and will be watching it a few more times -- as my aim was also to learn more about flying the E-Jets, which I definitely have. After following all these AC programs, booking a flight on the carrier seems inevitable now. I just hope I get to sample a few types shown in the videos.

Thank you so much for your kind words and very glad you liked the program. Things have indeed changed around a bit this year with the additional cameras in the cockpit but most importantly with the fantastic cooperation we're getting from Air Canada not only in picking the routes I want to cover in the series but by helping me pick the right pilots for each program.
I chose the Caribbean for the EMB-190 because I wanted us to have a flight with plenty of time to cover the aircraft and Captain Lewis certainly did that very well to say the least. I specifically picked Exuma because its an uncontrolled airport and it would offer an interesting approach and it did...

On Friday we will be releasing the next HD filmed program and you are going to find an equally great Captain this time covering Africa so stay tuned because there's a lot more where that came from

PS. And I hope you won't mind me including those comments on our website. Air Canada will be delighted with them. Thanks again and please continue sending in comments and reviews, they are critical to us bringing you more fantastic programs!

Yes and they wanted money... but they did promise us free bathroom access for our crew
Anyway, kidding aside.. over the past 20 years we've approached pretty much every airline, those that are interested and interesting and those where we know we can get the kind of filming we want to get end up in the series... the airlines you don't see such as Emirates, Singapore, Virgin, British etc... will likely never be in the series but its really their loss...
The best example of what can be accomplished when an airline wants to cooperate is our Air Canada series. Its getting them some wonderful attention, great publicity and a lot more!

I have the AC 77-300ER DVD and I'll be honest and say it makes me want to fly with AC... Your right in saying if an airline wants to work with it they will reap some rewards in the long term and get some very good (and free) publicity

Keep up the good work

Hi JustPlanes,

Have you guys ever thought about doing a "best of" DVD? Like best, or most interesting approaches, best take offs and landings in bad weather or even a best cabin presentations program (SAS A330 comes to mind for that one). JP has so many amazing programs under its belt that I would bet it would be quite easy to find some "best of" moments.

Also your webpage looks very professional and is easy to navigate, but every-time you click on a new link, it opens up a new tab. So if you spend a lot of time on your webpage, looking for your next purchase, one could have 20+ tabs open by the end. No biggy, just thought I'd mention it.

Thanks and keep up the amazing job!

Hello Kris,
Before the start of our 20th Anniversary year we considered something very similar to what you're suggesting, which by the way is an excellent idea! We looked at it for both our Cockpit and Airport series.
Because it involves thousands of hours of footage and because we have so much already going on with new releases and re-releases etc... there just is not enough time to do it. It would have been a nice and different kind of release for our anniversary.... so for now the idea is in the freezer but that doesn't mean that one day we might not attempt something like that.
We probably would need a person dedicated to that project working for a few months... and I don't know if that's viable financially...

You are right about opening pages up on our website... Its basically how its designed, I guess that was a choice when we launched it... If that's an issue I'll gladly look into this...
Thanks again Kris. Happy Canada Day!

I'll do it!   What editing program do you use if you don't mind me asking? I'm currently evaluating both FCP 7 and Premiere Pro CS5.5 for future purchase and wanted some first hand feedback. They are so expensive I need to be sure I get the right one for me.

Brussels A330 looks very interesting. The last SN Brussels DVD was very enjoyable so I'm sure this one is too.

Indeed... you can't really compare the 2 though... our new Brussels program was filmed Hi Def, widescreen and using 5 cameras in the cockpit so the views on takeoff and landing are awesome... and you're getting the Airbus Fleet Manager who does a fantastic job presenting the aircraft, the flight etc...

Hi Justplanes,

One question about the AC 319/321 DVD, which looks fantastic by the way! I watched the preview on youtube, during the A321 flight, the Captain pointed out Cape Canaveral and said that the last shuttle mission was launched just last week, how is that possible? Did you guys record, produce and release the AC DVD within a few days? The last space shuttle was launched on July 8th and your video came out on July 15th. I'm just curious.

Thanks,

I noticed this little detail too in the preview. I am sure JustPlanes will be able to fill you in but I suspected that it was a case of the crew knew that the Space Shuttles were launched from there and that the last mission was scheduled doonish. So the Captain just said that the last mission had been flown. I have seen that in TV programmes here in the UK where a programme is recorded before an event but goes out after it and the presenter or whoever just say it has already happened to keep up with the times.

Hey guys,
That was a good observation/question!
I believe that what the Captain meant is that it was just after the final flight of Discovery... It looks like we passed the area just over a week after that flight lifted off...

J P, you said on face book that the cost of producing the new Eastern DC7 was 60% higher than normal costs. Just curious about that. Why is this more costly than other DVDs? Also you mentioned about a DC3 in the Caribean. I have been on board Just planes site for a long time now and do not remember seeing that one offered.

Part of the reason of the Eastern being so expensive is that we paid to film... we normally don't do that.... we also paid so that the plane would make a special takeoff and landing in St Maarten for us to capture it from the beach... so it was a big gamble on our part because we didn't know how well it would sell... Things like the Buffalo DC-4 and Everts DC-6 are selling really well but not enough to justify spending what we did on Eastern... In any case judging from the sales of the first 2 days Eastern is an absolute hit so we def made the right call...

DC-3 in the Caribbean was a VHS we released maybe 18 years ago. It was filmed on Four Star and was a fantastic documentary on the aircraft and operation... a 3 man film crew had spent a week capturing great images around the islands... Sales were very disappointing and we lost a ton of money on it...

That's odd,you would think they would allowed you to film them for free in order to garner as much publicity as possible....

The one thing I love about the series are the more exotic operations featured like russian aircraft , vintage freighters or bush plane operations. Its a shame more people aren't into that. I still say this is one of the most unique programs that jp has done...

The MALEV program looks great! I have the original VHS program but I will grab the new DVD because of the new footage. Based on the preview, it look like JP enhanced the 767 footage too. I'm very excited about this, I've been hoping to see the MA program re-release in DVD format for years!

I totally agree with you and thats why we do those knowing that most of these will be a loss but it makes the series more complete and interesting...

Any clues as to when the next DVD is coming out ... and will it include a new aircraft type?

This Friday we have no release... instead we'll have a Columbus Day sale..
Next Friday we should have 2 DVDs coming out, a release that was previously on video and a re-release of a sold out DVD..
and the plan for the Friday thereafter is for the release of a new program.
No new type planned at this time...

Regarding the AC772LR I know it's widescreen and I'm assuming it's HD and not Blu-ray. I raced through a few of the comments above, but it's not clear to me.

I've enjoyed hours of watching the many Just Planes DVDs I know, but unfortunately with the widescreen TVs viewing is just not the same. Are all future Just Planes DVDs going to be in Widescreen format (or possibly even blu-ray).

Yes I confirm, all the newly filmed DVDs will be widescreen... anything that was filmed prior 2010 when we switched to HD and that is still going to be released in the future will be full screen. We have a number of programs that were never released and that are being considered for release, those would indeed be full screen... we also have a number of videos that we're considering re-releasing on DVD and that would be the same...

We're selling this new program in both BLU RAY and DVD so you can just buy the DVD, no worries...

I got the latest AC 77L video (YYZ-HKG) in standard format; I always get mine at the aviation shop at Manchester Airport, on the way to/from home (Dublin). I have to say I enjoyed it immensely.

A four hour aviation video can be quite "dry" (i.e wall to wall technical info), but the AC crew and particularly Capt. Allen made it a pleasure to watch. I am really glad that JP has such a good relationship with AC and as Capt. Allen hinted, hopefully we'll be seeing the 787 featuring in the future. I guess my only wish would be that you could go back in a time warp and feature some old AC types - DC8s, L1011s, 747 Classics, Vanguards etc!

I often feel that one of the great advantages of this videos is often overlooked - the historical value; in years to come when a Canadian youngster asked his retired AC pilot grandfather, "what was it like to fly A330s/787s etc", they'll have these videos/DVDs.

One question I have is about the crews' careers: the Quebecois FO mentioned that he had served as a Embraer jet captain for two years, before going back to being an FO (and a relief FO, at that) on the 777; this seems somewhat unusual. Also, it seems unusual that they have relief FOs only on the 777, if I understood correctly. This suggests that he just flies as a relief FO, not alternating (as most carriers do); anyone know why AC does it this way?

Glad you enjoyed the new Air Canada DVD kaitak!
If you have a minute to email us those comments for our website that would be great!
info@justplanes.com

You are right about the historic value of these DVDs.
Already we have aircraft that are pretty much no longer in service... and airlines that don't exist anymore...

As far as your question.
Sometimes pilots will go for the right seat on a larger aircraft over the left seat in a smaller one.
In the case of this F/O, he does 1 roundtrip YYZ to HKG and logs more than 30 hours...
He might have to do 10-20 flights on the Embraer to get to 30 hours and may prefer the other..
Perhaps someone else has more inside into all this...
