The song is Aria, the work of Malcolm McLaren and Yanni, based on Delibes "The Flower Duet". It's surely the most famous music to ever appear on any commercial, and even today - long after it has been retired, you hear it and you think of one airline. Advertising genius.

Quoting cpd (Reply 2): Arguably the most famous theme music associated with any airline, over the world.
I would argue that UAL and Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" would be the most famous. I can't hear that song without thinking of UAL. Here's a "classic" commercial from 1988:

Now I remember that one, vaguely, but it was a long time ago since United Airlines even bothered to advertise on TV here in this country. Come on UAL, Qantas and Virgin Australia can't be that big and scary can they? Do some adverts The only airline commercials we regularly see here now are QF and CX (the one where the lady has a birthday, and the CX flight-attendant finds a subtle way to say happy-birthday to the passenger).
One of my reference books here (one on marketing) tells the story of Landor & Associates and BA, along with that "Aria" theme music - that is was so successful and so well loved people reportedly complained so vigorously when it was taken off the adverts it then had to be brought back again!
One of the related videos to the BA adverts above has the actual full sound-track in its entirety. Even today, it's still a beautiful, timeless piece of music.
And speaking of Qantas, how could I forget their iconic theme music:
I put that last one there with reservations, as those of you who've flown QF domestic flights have probably seen the "making of" that commercial on the inflight entertainment.

My favorite is actually the theme music for US Airways:
Does anybody have any information about this (i.e. the name, composer, who performed it, etc.)? I've always wondered.
The new one is okay, but the old theme music (the one that played during the beginning and end of the safety video during the 1997-branding era) is, in my opinion, the hands down best of all time. Of course, I was in the midst of my love affair with US at that time, so perhaps my sentimentality blurs my objectivity in the matter.
Tolling the bells of the Swamp to delight the Common Spirit
No actual commercial for the current theme song, but it is used on board and is played on their phone system when calling their customer service centers. AirFrance always picks something interesting. Especially the previous commercial is very classy.

Philippine Airlines has two theme songs: one is "Love at Thirty Thousand Feet" by Jose Mari Chan, which has been the airline's "unofficial" (or official; we'll never know ) theme song since the 1970s. It has appeared in ads over the years in one way or another.
There's a jazz version of this made recently, but I can't seem to find the video.
The other one is "Shining Through", which was first adopted with PAL's rebranding in 1986, and subsequently reintroduced this year for its 70th anniversary.
I never knew AirFrance had a theme song. Very interesting. I wonder if they have ever done any research into how much revenue such a theme song generates.
