Stupid? They are defending their intellectual property rights, which they are well within their rights to do. Unauthorised use of an airline's logo can lead to the website being "passed off" as being endorsed by the airline. They are perfectly entitled to be doing what they are doing.

Whenever you use an airline's logo or other trademarks of an airline without permission from that airline, it is technically a breach of their intellectual property rights. It's just that some airlines choose to actively enforce it, others don't.
Those that don't probably see it as a bit of "free marketing". That's the other side of the argument - using an airline's trademarks on the internet increases its brand exposure. But it's not "stupid" or "dumb" to choose to enforce their rights any more than it is "stupid" or "dumb" to choose not to. Being strict in the enforcement of intellectual property rights allows the airline to control its brand exposure, in order to prevent it from being devalued. It allows the airline to control which website it wants to be associated with, and which websites they want to stay away from.

Remember when AA would not allow anyone to use their logo for FS repaints? For many years you could not download a repaint of an American Airlines/American Eagle aircraft. It took a lot of negotiation at quite a senior level within AA management to finally allow it.
