I'm having currently having trouble with my dvd drive and the second disc of FSX won't read. I'm wondering if I can install FSX or FS2004 onto another computer and transfer all the files onto an external hard drive and then put in onto this one. Does anyone know if that's possible or are the discs absolutely needed to run the program?
Also, providing that this grand plan works with no bugs, could I just run either program from the external hard drive or would I need to place one/other onto this computer itself?

I had that issue as well back then when I bought FS2004. The 3rd disc couldn't be read anymore after 3 months after purchase or so.
So I called the costumer service and told them about the issue. They tried to fix the problem with giving me tipps, but it didn't work. So I got a new 3rd disc... Then it worked fine again.

I don't think so. Otherwise you can instally the FS on one computer and then use it on every other computer. That sounds like a copyright violation, so I doubt it. But I am not sure.

Yes, I have done it before, just make sure to create a folder in your main hard drive for the FS config file.
mine is for example
C:UsersYourUserNameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftFS9
If you install FS on another computer make sure to copy this folder and then put it on the computer you want FS to run, you can delete the FS9.cfg and once you fire it up, the system will generate a new one (hopefully with the technical specs of the system)

P.S. also there is a crack for FS2004 called NoCD which allows FS to run without needing the 4th disc.

FS2004 and FSX are very different in this context.
FSX needs activation. So if you install it somewhere, then move the complete folder ( a USB disc seams a good idea) and then add the application Path to the registry, I assume it will open with the activation screen, and once it is activated all is fine. So do not activate on the first PC.
FS2004 needs the first or second DVD in the drive.
In this case it looks like there is a problem between one DVD, DVD#2 and the DVD drive on that computer. I would try to make a DVD copy of that DVD, just one cannot be misued any way and the license is not coupled to the DVD, but the activation code.
