Crashing A B727 On Discovery Channel U.K.

Just saw a promo on Discovery Channel re the crashing of a B727 by remote control chase plane into Laguna Salada dry lakebed to gather data to make flying even safer.

The program will air in the United Kingdom on the 18th of Oct 2012, still not certain of start time, but will post when I'm across it, not sure about USA, I imagine you will air it sooner.

The project was years in the making, with the Broken Wing Team considering a Tristar L1011 for the job originally before settling on a B727 212 reg N293AS and nick named Big Flo. She was crashed landed in April 2012 after the two pilots parachuted out the back ala D.B. Cooper style, having removed the rear stairs to enable the crew to make a clean unobstructed exit.

I just want to provide an update to the Broadcast times and dates and channel for the B727 Crash documentary.

It turns out that the documentary is a Co-Production between the U.K. based Channel 4 and the U.S. based Discovery Channel.

Channel 4 will air the program titled "The Plane Crash" this Thursday on the 11th of October 2012 at 9pm. Discovery Channel will then air the same program on the Discovery Channel U.K. on the 18th of Oct 2012.

I still haven't learnt what time it will air on Discovery Channel yet.

I watched it and if that whole team thought it was a joke they wouldn't have put those pilots in danger like that. Not to mention the program states that many millions of dollars was spent on the program. That's alot of money for being a joke. While I think they didn't do enough to explain the post-crash data I believe they made some conclussions, the biggest being the multitude of wire bundles and other items that interfere with cabin evacuation. Oh and the other being that the brace position appears to be better for a crash.

having watched the documentary, it was far from a joke, and there were plenty of lessons that were learned from the crash. Apparently it's only the second time that a plane has ever been crashed and studied - NASA tried it with a 707 but they lost control of it and it ended up in a fireball that couldn't be studied.

There were quite a few conclusions drawn from it, AviRaider mentioned most of them, but it was also discovered that the main landing gear will collapse as intended, but the nosewheel is designed not to collapse, and this caused the front part of the plane to sheer off. It raised the question of whether the nosewheel needs to be redesigned to sheer off as well on high impact.
