How Do You Land In FS?

I been able to wangle a "landing" a few times, but majority of them are failures.
So, I'll ask the pros. How do I land properly???

I would recommend watching youtube videos of landings. If you want to get technical, think about what makes an airplane fly and all the forces that are acting in favor and against it. (Physics!)

What I did was memorize what speeds work best for landing specific airplanes through trial and error.

It took me quite a while to learn how to land. I started off way back with FS4 and my landings were far from picture perfect! For me it is all about speed, you need to find out what the best approach speed for your aircraft is when you are flaps and gears down. The kneeboards should have the checklists that you can review for landing procedures. When you take off, pay attention to your speed when you rotated and keep that speed in mind for when you are landing. You do not want to be coming in at 250kts, unless you are trying to simulate being a Navy pilot making an approach to a carrier.

Try the flying lessons in FS. They are pretty good to get the basics. Do the student pilot and private pilot lessons.

The basics:

While approaching the airport, hold the aircraft's nose two degrees below the horizon and reduce the throttle. Make sure you are looking at the far end of the runway. As you cross the airport fence, raise the nose so it is level with the horizon. Once you reach the runway threshold, raise the nose to two degrees above the horizon and gently touch the aircraft down on the main landing gear and reduce the throttle to idle.

I would say at the most basic level reduce power and add flaps, it will slow you down and help you descend. Play around with power settings for best results and airplane specific

How are you getting on?

What are you trying to Landing? Heavy jets or small?

Flight sim has built in tutorials that will help you.

I spent many hour practicing visual circuits and landing at TNCM in flight sim, No ILS, your either on the beach or on the runway ha ha

Once you master it, there is a big wide world of virtual flying, I have many hours off line, but on-line real world flying is what I like the most. Cold and dark starts starts, route planning, metars, sids/stars, real world procedures.

Here's all of my online flying stats with Vatsim - part of which is nearly 500 hours with the Level D 767

hey everybody,

thanks for the tips!
I have practiced, and am now able to land with a dash-8.
For some reason though with a jet aircraft/heavy , I can never line up with the runway on final approach.
Any help on this?

For starters, when flying jets, make sure you have no wind. At least do this the first few times. It is easier.

I usually land visually. If it helps you to line up for landing; Check the radio frequency for an ILS approach (Green Triangle) on the map or gps for any airport. Place that in NAV1 in the radios. Make sure the avionics is set for NAV and not for GPS.

When inside the ILS at a proper altitude, turn on the autopilot and click APP (approach) in some third party airplanes this only works to line the plane with the runway, in others it also lines the plane with the glide scope (vertical descent).

Hope this helps, either way you'll learn something new!

Depends a lot on your aircraft and getting the aircraft set up the way you want it at the correct point. As mentioned above, indicated airspeed is very important...too fast at certain points and you wont have enough time to slow the aircraft to satisfy a stable approach before you reach the runway.

A basic guide for speed in a jet would be to reduce 10kts per mile, eg at 9 miles be a maximum of 190, 8 miles 180 etc all the way down. As a previous poster said, the first few times use the autopilot whilst you extend the flaps on the approach and reduce the speed, wait until it's all set and then that will give you the attitude you want to continue on that constant 3 degree path to the runway.

Standard principles apply here too, Pitch + Power = Performance... Pitch + Power + Trim = Trimmed Performance. However the MSFS default aircraft are rubbish, you need something like the PMDG 737NGX in FSX and set that aircraft like the real one and you'll get nearly the same performance.

In terms of actual landing technique, the bigger the aircraft the earlier you'll need to flare. In a 737, use a principle of check (the pitch attitude by 1-2 degrees), close the thrust levers slowly (the quicker you do it the quicker the nose will drop and make a harder landing), and then hold that attitude until you touch down smoothly. Practice makes perfect!

rahulrahul, occurs to me that I did some 'tutorials' with screenshots a few years ago, which might be useful to you.

The first one shows how to land an aeroplane manually in a crosswind. Sorry that it shows a very old-fashioned aeroplane, but I have a soft spot for the Hawker Hurricane, it was the very first aeroplane that I ever saw 'in the flesh':-

Finesse. And developing a bit of a memory from practice. I prefer using the keyboard numpad controls for landing as they allow me to make more fine control inputs versus a joystick.

One tip hasn't been mentioned yet, and it's the same trick as used on the big, real metal.

It's counter-intuitive, but as soon as you've grasped it, you won't go back to your previous technique.


Regulate airspeed by pitch. Too fast - nose up, too slow - nose down.

Regulate altitude by power. Too low - more thrust, too high - less thrust.
