I have seen various threads on this topic, but I could not find one that asks my questions, but I apologize if I missed it. Is the World Airline Historical Society worth joining if I do not built models or have a large collection of models? In addition, are there any organizations that are for enthusiasts or that are for present day aviation in general and not specifically for models?

The Wings Club is the foremost fraternity....www.wingsclub.org. The WAHS is also good, and its not just about collecting models, it's about airline history in general. Both are probably the best associations for airline/aerospace history.
