FS Frame Rates Crash When Window Active

I've had no problems with FS until recently--when the FS9 window is active, the frame rate crashes down to 1.0fps--if I deselect the window, ie click on the Windows 7 toolbar at the bottom, the frame rate goes back up to 99fps. Clicking again on FS9, making the window active, and the frame rate again crashes down to 1fps. Any idea what's driving this or how to fix it??
