Why do so many people collect Russian and surrounding area safety cards? I don't see why so many poepl concentrate on this area more than say China, Japan, Sri Lanker etc. Can someone please explain your reasons for collecting these specific cards? And don't just say because there rare.

Most people here are from the western hemisphere by far. Many of these CIS airlines do not fly to their countries (certainly not to North America or most of western Europe, and not much of Asia for that matter). They are smaller carriers with local routes. Additionally, many of these carriers have a short life span that some folks are looking for. The aircraft they fly are only found in their sort of airline. Many of these Russian types are uncommon throughout most of the world. Therefore, they are rare. If one lived in Russia and had an abundance of Russian safety cards, they'd probably consider many domestic US cards to be rare. It is all a matter of perspective and this message board is a limited perspective.

You have it partly right. They are in fact rarer amongst certain collectors. To someone who doesn't speak Russian, or have contacts in Russia, or fly within Russia, they probably will be rarer.
The one thing which irks me with collecting these cards, is some people will try to claim that a card they are offering is "especially rare". A prime example, was a An-24 Uzbekistan Airways card. The price this person was asking was equivalent to a month's wages for the average Uzbek citizen. After trying to explain to this person that this card was not all that rare, and him not buying my reasoning (with some extra commentary from him as to why it was so rare [it sounded like it came from Mars]), I contacted my mate in Tashkent, and he got me the whole Uzbekistan Airways fleet (except for the Yak-40 which is coming soon).
As to why I collect them....because that is where my passion in aviation is. Much the same as why the person who started this thread collect British Airways card.
I have only been collecting safetycards for all of 3 months, and already have some beaut cards in my collection; with a lot more coming in the not too distant future.

But sometimes people have a huge collection of russian cards but maybe from 300 cards 230 cards were bought at ebay. I also have some bought cards from ebay but maybe 80 cards of 900 cards now. At a convention thats another part because there the peoples want to sell there cards because they often have there cards since months maybe years so they can sell there cards for los prices! For Example FRANCFORT!!!!
