hi,
i got a couple of questions for you flight simers out there
1. how do you know when to start your decent? lets say i'm in a 744 at FL390...how many nm miles out of the apt do i start my decent, and at what speed?
2. is there a way to fly a GPS approach?
3. is there any way to know if your aligned w/ the runway before you come in range of the localizer?

1. To know when to start your descent you just have to do, if you are at FL390, is 39x3=117. You have to start your descent at 117 nm away from the airport.
2. Andrew Herd made a tutorial on how to fly different types of approaches, including the GPS one, just search through the How To's at http://www.flightsim.com/

How do you get the calculation of 39x3? That's assuming 3 miles per thousand feet, but at what speed and descent rate is this?
As for the third question (related to the second), you can figure out if you're basically aligned with the runway using the GPS. Just put yourself inside the cone and you're aligned. This is how I generally fly - I still haven't figured out how to use the radios properly in commercial aircraft so I end up lining myself up using the GPS.

what cone?
when i use GPS navigation, it just flies me to the middle of the apt, not aligning me w/ any airport
so pretty much what i want to know is how you get from the GPS line to aligning yourself w/ the runway
