FS2002 Damage Effects?

I have heard people talking about damage effects in FS2002 how do you get these to work on the planes.

Be careful with the visual damage effects, only a few of the default aircraft have them, for example of the 737s, only the American Pacific one has a visual damage texture.

Several people who have done repaints blindly say to copy the damage texture from the "texture" folder. Can't remember the exact file name but it ends in "_d"! Don't do this, otherwise if you have a mishap, your aircraft will go from whatever livery it was to partly American Pacific!
