Since I'm new to all of this, can anyone just give me a quick intro to the "safety cards". iow, what are they? Are they the plastic folders in the seat backs with the escape routes? Thanks!

Pretty close, they care the cards on the back of the seat that say "safety information for the Boeing 767" then on the inside it has diagrams on how to get out in an emergency etc.

Dazed767 is correct. The show you the exits on the aircraft, how to use lifevests, oxygen masks, etc., and what stuff (cell phones, etc.) yopu can't use on the plane.

There are alot of different safetycards out there which can give you a colorful collection

Continental, United, Delta, Aer Lingus ETC.

But they very rarely save your life but at least they give you a brief overview on what to do and where to go in the case of an emergency, they are especially needed on a B747, and any other Jumbo Jet. I like collecting them because each different airline has a different card.

I agree with SouthwestJG737. I collect the cards because they are not only "Colorful", but they are a true collectible. My most "Prized" card is a TWA L1011.

Can you take them out of the aircraft you fly on? Don't the janitors check the seats, I think they replace the safety card it it's missing but I'm not sure.

You CAN take them out of the seats, but you shouldn't do it. These cards cost $5 per card to make. If you do take one, they will replace it but you shouldn't do it, as the cards say "Please do not remove from aircraft."
