Just bought this bit no matter what i do i can not set the speed and heading and get it to work on autopilot ! Any suggestions please ???

read the manual... It's all in there, what you should push and pull and when.
The buttons behave different when used with the left and right mouse button...

Plus of course, when using the MCDU you don't need to set speeds and headings usually (except when getting direct radar vectors to headings instead of waypoints or navaids).

Yes, my tip would also be to read the manual, Airbus is completely different to Boeing, but this requires further explanations which you'll find in the manual.
