For my birthday the other day, I received my first two plane models, made by Herpa in 1:400 scale.
One is a US 747-400, N171UA, and the other is A Delta 777-232, N865DA.
I haven't really seen or held many models in my life, so I have little to compare it to, but I am impressed with their quality.
The 1:400 scale is a perfect size for you to see the plane well, and not take up too much space in your home if your collection grows.
Now I jsut want to get a 757-200, but ATA's 20th anniversary edition (N520AT), which I know my local shop has.
I really don't know what you folks talk about when you discuss models, but I'd love to learn and take any advice from you folks. What other factors in models do you enjoy that I should look into?

Phil! Happy Birthday bro!
Huge fan of Dragon Wings models here, and Jet-X. Have about 20 of them now and really love the quality, down to the fact the landing gear trucks tilt the way they do in real life off the ground.
For me it started with the Southwest 1:500's that Herpa makes, then I discovered all the other ones out there. I'm starting to like the 1:400's for more detail, but still small enough. (I've got over 500 of those darned things all over the house now.)

Hi!
I started when i was younger with some schabak 1/600 planes.. the quality was quite bad. So i switched to the 1/500 Herpas, which were much better, but not really detailed (the wheels were the main problem). Then i got some Dragon WIngs 1/400, which until today are my favourite Aircraft.
Meanwhile there are a lot of manufacturers, in 1/500 beeing Herpa, Schuco (starjets) and 1/400 Herpa, GEminijets (Schuco), Dragon WIngs and others, these are the ones I prefer.
Be cautious, this may get an expensive hobby I have 1200 planes, I don't even want to start calculating how much I already paid, specially for some 'limited' models...
Have Fun, and get yourself a big home, start building an airport

As for building an full size airport keep in mind a 1:500 scale 8,000-10000ft runway is 20-25ft long.
