Is there any web site that independently reviews airliner videos?
I am curious about the new Just Planes DVDs : Air Greenland, Transavia, and Air Labrador.... but my previous experiences of JP videos, 4+ years ago(?), are not great ones...either too much camera shake, or hour after hour of thru the cockpit window looooooong approach shots.

I have the Cougar and the KLM DVDs, there quite good, the Cougar has some very interesting weather in it (rainy approaches, etc...). The KLM has a lot of flights to nice destinations...

Just Plane is improved deeply by the introduction of DVDs
I've got 3 JP VHS and they are really boring. No cockpit shots, no technical explanation, only the landscape was filmed.
Then I bought 5 DVDs, and they are really awesome.
B777 United: The day after you can fly a B777 A320/MD82 Spanair: Fantastic A330 Air France: I like that CF6 sound and the touches and go A320 Goodjet: A must have for Airbus lover Corfù/Rhodi: Interesting european traffic (mainly charter)
I've just ordered: B777/B767 Air Europe A319/A320 Germanwings D328 Air Alps

I recently bought three JP DVDs - "KLM City Hopper", "Corfu & Rhodes" and "Munich, Vienna, Innsbruck & Salzburg".
This was my first venture in purchasing JP DVDs and I have to confess I am really pleased with them all. From my limited knowledge of this type of product they seem to have good content & good production.
I am especially pleased with the "KLM City Hopper" aircraft product which to be honest is where my interest was held slightly more than the airport DVDs. As "Blue Angel" has posted there are quite a few flights to some nice destinations on it. Although the airport DVDs have good content I however, from a personal viewpoint, feel I will be purchasing more aircraft DVDs in the future.
I have also taken note of the "A320 Goodjet" comments by "Mb339" as I quite like the "Airbus". I also have a "soft spot" for older aircraft like the B727 & BAC-111 which are catered for by JP as well.
Finally the "Air Alps" DVD also appeals to me which I think is my next purchase.

I have 16 of the DVDs and maybe about 100? of the VHS versions.
The DVDs are:
United, VG Airlines, Air Europe, Air DO, Air Saychelles, Air Alps, Kenya Airways/Flamingo, Qatar, Britania, Air Alps Merpati, Continental Express, Air Tahiti, Lan Chile, Mai/Air Mandalay, and Icelandair.
I will not try and tell about each one unless someone wants my opinion of them. But my personal favorite would have to be Air Europe because of the B777 and B767. Qatar is one of the best produced in my opinion. Overall I have no regrets about the purchase of any of them except for VG Airlines. Just do not feel VG was produced well.
As far as the VHS ones are concerned I still enjoy watching them on occasions and personally do not feel that the camera work is that shaky. Perhaps Voodoo has some that I do not have myself though I do agree about the long approaches for some.
Overall as has been stated I feel that the DVDs are better produced and and now include cabin service shots and on some at least one flight segment from the passenger seat view that I really enjoy. Also the more modern productions have more interaction with pilots explaining flight and a more condenced cockpit introduction as compared to long drawn out talking on earlier ones.
I tend to be more attracted to 180 minute ones with lots of takeoffs and landings. Better value for the money.
If I can clear the money for some new ones I am thinking of Air Greenland and Flybe.

I have 6 Just Plane DVD's.
Air Seychells, 5 out of 5
A must have. Many rainy weather approaches
United 4.5 out of 5
Very detailed flights
Icelandair 4 out of 5
Good but I wish they had aircraft walkarounds. Also on the approach to LHR it cut out for a few seconds and then resumes, I called JP and said it was the camera. But worth the money.
Sobelair 5 out of 5
Great DVD. Detailed flights. I love the 767 part.
WEA 5 out 5
Also very good, love the 737NG.
London Heathrow 3.5 out of 5
Kinda boring after a while, but still good
Just Ordered
Air Europe
And
FlyBE
On some of the DVDs its hard to understand the pilots because of the thick accent. But I can't do anything about that.
I hope they come out with a 747 dvd. Does anyone know what will the next releases be from JP???

Blue Angels,
Are we talking about the same Cougar here? The 727's with the beautiful images on the fuselarge? I lokve those planes! Its a shame that theyve gone out of business, but its an up side aswell, as both operastional planes are together at my local airport, southend. This means all 3 cougar aircraft are there including the non-operational one.

The old Royal B737-200 video is excellent.
The Air Georgia TU-154 was horrible and enough to put me off buying anything else from JP. The only internal cockpit stuff is some pilots mumbling, with no explanations on camera. It seems to mostly be out the window filming.

I agree with you on that but I still bought more. Out of my collection that was the worst one and Air Lithuania Yak 40 was also bad. I am hoping for a DVD on the TU204. That might be a good one.

Do you have any of the Royal Airlines videos? The 727, L-1011 and A310 videos are all great, I'd recommend them....the A310's cockpit explanation takes up at least 1/4 of the video. I'm going to buy the 737-200 video for my birthday, along with the Fine Air DC-8 videos from the old series.

Sabena B735/A320
Spanair A320/MD80
United B777
WEA B738/734 (even though Cpt talkabout is much too long)
The worst I have was B763 CityBird - waste of money.

One more thing - If you want more detailed and proffesional explanations of aircraft and airline operations - go for ITW videos. However unfortunately they do not make new films anymore.

Certainly go for the DVDs. My favourite is the Air Atlanta featuring the 747-100 and the 767-200.
The United 777 grows on you but it isn't as good as the Air Atlanta one. Focus wobbles all over the place, you can't hear the FO during the walk around and the United preflight briefing shows a very disinterested cabin staff. Still it gets better. The systems overview and the MCP walk through was excellent. If you want to see how to set up an FMC get the Air Atlanta DVD.
I would like to get the Air Europe but it seems to be out of stock.
By the way one other thing - My Air Atlanta DVD will not play the last 15 minutes - it says that the DVD is dirty. I have cleaned it but to no avail - any ideas? Do video stores fix that sort of thing for a fee?

Gerry ..... You could probably just e-mail Michel Moskal @ info@justplanes.com, and I'll betcha he'd send you out a new copy of the Atlanta disc. I've gotten a couple of bad discs in the past, and he's sent out a new one ASAP, no questions asked. Great service at JPV!
Interesting thread here. I love airliner/airport videos/DVDs.
I have every one of Just Planes products, and enjoy all of them. I'd agree with earlier sentiments re. the UAL 777 DVD. That's a real goodie!
Someone above didn't like the VG A330 program. This surprised me. It's one of my faves. Love that beautiful livery on the VG/Delsey Airbuses.
Cougar is top notch too (IMO), with a couple of really hard landings & heavy rain.
I really like it when flights inside the pax cabin are filmed (esp. t/o & landing sequences). Nothing gives you a better sense of actually "being on board" & taking the flight yourself than by filming out the pax window(s). The sense of speed as the takeoff roll commences is great, and is something that you just don't get a large "feel" for when viewing t-offs from the cockpit.
The JPV website is first-rate as well. Always kept very up-to-date with new news. http://www.justplanes.com
Jetsgo, CCM, DBA, and GOL are new ones coming soon.
Anybody watch their Air Greenland program yet? I have it, but haven't watched it as yet. 2 very cool new JPV types introduced there: The Dash 7 and the first helicopter in the series (S-61). Looks nice.
I, like others above me here, would like to see more B747s on DVD. Currently there are 2....The Sabena 743 and the Air Atlanta 741. But more would always be welcome (natch).
A good VHS on the Boeing 747F variants is the Atlas Air video from a few years ago. Some interesting and humorous pilot info on that one.
And there's also an Air Namibia B744 (and 732) VHS, which features multiple go-arounds in severely heavy rains aboard a B737-200. Most unique in that sense. Anybody else have that one?
I also have all the AirUtopia tapes (and now 1 DVD -- HKG/CLK). Those are nice too. As are Peter Crook's Highball Production series of "PlaneTapes". He's a darn good videographer (IMO). No shaky landings on his products. ... http://www.planetapes.com
There's also Harry's (B.L.&P.), IAPV, and ITVV videos. I normally don't like the super technical aspects of these products as much as the "scenery" they provide from way up high....but I really liked the ITVV Virgin Atlantic Platinum video (B744). Good pilot talk. And you can actually understand him (Cpt. Alan Carter).
IAPV (International Airport Videos .... http://www.iapv.com) is supposed to be switching to the DVD format as well. They're showing 11 new "coming soon" airport & "Special" titles, including a 2-Part Chicago ORD.
Just watched an oldie but goodie last night ..... One of the 2 Just Plane's "Flight In The Cockpits" featuring Fine Air and that nearly-extinct dinosaur, the DC-8.
Another pretty good set of 20+ programs (on specific airports only) is the "Airports Of The World" series by Flying Pig Airliner Videos. They're hard to find now however. But their 2-Part Kai Tak is quite nice IMO. The color is a tad on the bleached-out side, but an advantage over other such products is the inclusion of constant ATC talk throughout the programs. Interesting to hear the "Cleared to land -- Runway 13" chatter of a now-bygone era. http://www.airportworld.com/videos.htm
Utopia's got a nice Kai Tak video too, with extra on-screen tidbits of data thrown in.
Might as well throw this one on the table as well .... Anybody got the multi-part series of videos called "Great British Airline Classics"? These are all narrated programs featuring different aspects of BA/BEA/BOAC operations spanning the 1950s to the '70s, including a nice L-1011 ("Autoland") program and a special Concorde video. Can't get these in NTSC anymore though, I don't think.
Another extremely fascinating video is one produced as a promotional piece by The Boeing Company, called "Going Boeing". It features 4 separate short films on Boeing aircraft, including 2 great pieces on the making & first flight of the B747 in February 1969. Highly recommended. You can still find this Boeing video (60 minutes long) for $19.99 at http://www.moviesunlimited.com.
Hopefully, we can keep this thread open with updates on what DVDs/Videos people here are buying/enjoying.

Yeah, Gerry. I've watched the Air Europe. You get two discs with that one. Very nice. The Triple-Seven is one awesome airplane (as no doubt you will concur). Those engines ought to be considered a "Great Wonder Of The World"! Simply amazingly huge and powerful.
Hopefully, some day, JPV will give us an inside gander into the 777-300 and brand-new 777-300ER. (Might take the full 3 hours to do a walkaround of that longggggggggg baby. )
P.S. ...... My elongated spiel above failed to mention yet another company with aviation videos/DVDs: Avion Video of the UK. More nice Digital programs there. ..... http://www.avionvideo.com. I particularly like their Anchorage program.

It seem that The PrivatAir DVD is mainly cabin shots and not in the cockpit. It says the BBJ Newark to Munich clip is 35 minutes long but from the pictures on the above link it seems like it is 35 minutes of cabin and wing views. I don't think this will be a big hit, disappointing. :-(

>> "It seem[s] that the PrivatAir DVD is mainly cabin shots and not in the cockpit."
That's perfect from my perspective. (That is, from the viewpoint of someone who's got a lot of these programs.)
There's far too few views from the pax cabins on the videos/DVDs (IMO). And too few actual t/o & landing chapters filmed from a pax seat. I like the pax cabin shots...esp. when cabin announcements can be heard in the background. Just like taking the flight yourself, IMO.
Once you've seen every dial/screen/knob/switch in the cockpit on previous programs, the need for repetition on future productions is limited in this collector's mind. (Although I still like a good dose of flight-deck views sprinkled in.)
I like very much the looks of the PrivatAir program....esp. considering the unique seating configuration on the Airbus A319LR.
Looking at that little baby Airbus, hard to believe it can make a long-haul, non-stop run of 8 hours-plus. Nice lil' craft it appears.
