plane spotting is hardly a 'let go and come back' sorta thing, at least when hardcore people like us do it.
when i went to LGA this past summer, i usually went with just my radio scanner [radio shack pro-82]. then, got my digital camera [olypmus c-740] on 8/03, and packed that, now i bring a bookbag with my scanner, camera, and issue of airliner world. mom makes me pack the umbrella, too. i set up camp and move around over the course of a few hours, running around like im trying to catch a flight with my camera in hand, and scanner blaring ATC lol.
what do you bring when you go plane spotting? what scanner and/or camera do you use when you go?

I just bring my old Uniden Bearcat SC150B and my Olympus C720 camera with me. When I had my truck I used to set up a lawnchair in the bed and hang out for a while.

Here up in Denver, people usually bring their cameras, scanners (if you have one) lawn chairs, and lots of Cold ice water in the summer or plenty of coats in the winter.

Usually just my camera (Finepix 2800) and a pen and paper to write down some random notes...along with spare batteries/memory cards and something to drink...

I'm hardly ever without binoculars, since I just leave them in the car. I usually don't have much else on me. I don't have a scanner, and I don't bring my camera with me unless I've gone out specifically to get pictures. Besides (and I may be shouted off this website for saying this), I really think General Aviation airplanes are a bit more photogenic anyway.
