Hi all- I'm thinking about buying a scanner (eyeing Sporty's SP-125), and am wondering what is the typical range for any scanner? From how far away could I pick up a strong signal?

I am using a Black Jaguar (BJ200-MKTV) for many years with very good results. Also I am using an special airband antenna on the top of our house. According to my experience, range is average like that:

Usuing scanner just with scanner antenna:

listen to tower about 5 to 10 km (about 5 miles)
listen to flying aircraft (until a maximum distance of 300 km (about 200 miles) - depending on FL of airplane

Using the special antenna on top of my house:

listen to tower: MST (20 miles away) - no problem at all ; DUS (40 miles away) - airplanes flying lower than 1000 feet - impossible
listen to flying aircraft - range up to 450 km (about 280 miles)

But you have to consider also the area where are you in (within city, on the landscape, wooden area, mountain area, and so on)

Hope this helped a little bit
