OK, so I got a computer last year

Dell 2.4Ghz P4
1 Gb Ram
120 Hard drive
120 Radeon ATI card.

I felt pretty good about myself. But I got Cocky

So my awesome sibling surprised me with FS9 this holiday

SO what did I do? I am not a computer whiz, but why let that stop me right?

I downloaded a LOT fo scenery: Israel, NY airports, LAX, ORD, HNL, SYD, LGB....I can go on.

I dnlded a bit of a/c but now too many. But I downloaded a load of PAI plannes too,

Now... my frame rate it shot! I am such a tool.

Should I started taking stuff out in order to get a nice rate?

for example, it I fly around NY, it jostles from 2.2 to 19.0 kind of getting stuck.

will check computer for spyware now, defraged 2 weeks ago.

I know that flightsim and avsim are good sites to find help, but I wanted to start asking for help here as well. tips? ideas? am I a schmuck( concerning this Smile)

I would recommend updating your video card drivers. If you are using the ones that came with Windows XP, chances are they are not very good and will degrade your system performance in FS9.

The main FPS killer in FS9 is often the 3D clouds. Especially if there are lots of them and when it's overcast the sim can become a slideshow.

AI traffic can also drop your FPS, but your system should be able to handle it for the most part.

First of all, make sure all your AI aircraft are specially designed for AI and are the latest versions available with multiple levels of detail.
Make sure you get rid of the MS default AI planes using a traffic remover tool, as they have way too much detail. My old PC was struggling on frames and I held off with Ultimate Traffic until buying a new PC. I got UT a few days early and tested it on the old PC. With UT and 100% traffic instead of a few default AI, my framerates were BETTER.

The video driver advice is good too.

Also, if your video drivers support anti-aliasing, turn it off in the sim and set the video drivers to do it. Massive improvement for me.

Now to start with the sliders. Water effects and clouds are the biggest monsters. I also turn off aircraft reflections and shadows because I don't like them. They are way over-done, mirror-like aircraft casting black shadows.
Turn sliders down to see what difference they make. I have most maxed out except for the ones above and the sim looks and works great. I have two monitors, so everything has to be drawn twice on my PC.

I have not used add-on scenery in 04, but in 02 you could deselect just by unticking the box next to it. You could try disabling some airports, as one or two may have way too many polygons than they are worth. Try flying around Europe a bit.  Smile

I also run FS on a separate physical hard drive to Windows so that they can both read/write at the same time.

Regards,
Craig.

What is anti-aliasing? And where can I update my drivers?

As best I can explain, anti-aliasing is the smoothing of textures.

Go to the FS display settings and choose the hardware tab. Make sure anti-aliasing is not ticked.

Then go to the video driver setttings within Windows. I use the FX5600 and the anti aliasing is in the Performance and Quality settings on the display setup.

For your ATI card, you will have to visit their website for the latest driver for your particular card. For other tips, I would search the AVSIM forums, just put in the model number of your video card in the search criteria and you will probably find loads of threads.

regards,
Craig.
