FS 2004 747-400

When flying the 747 i find that when in the landing phase of flight at very light weights and full flaps i have to have a very high nose position to keep the descent rate right. If i try and lower the nose to see the runway the descent rate goes to maybe 2000 feet per minute. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I don't think the viewpoint has much to do with a sink rate, what model 747 are you using, I would suggest the POSKY 747 series, they are truly great aircraft and I find landings very easy - I just did a visual into SXM in the -400 and nearly clipped the fence (Not bad for my first time huh????), I was at flaps 40, and was considerably heavy fuel wise and I didn't sink at all.

Could the weather conditions have played a part, also if you have to raise the nose considerably in order to stay afloat try advancing the throttles a tad when you are further out with a lower attitude.

Perhaps your 747 model is not really that good (If it was the POSKY one it would be fine) and has inaccurate speeds, you could just try landing a bit faster and when you are a few miles from the threshold slow her and ease her in gently.

There could be a few different problems. As Craigy said, maybe you're flying the approach right but you just need to adjust your viewpoint, or as FlyingColours said it may be a bad model that you're using.

If it isn't one of these problems, I think it could have to do with your throttle setting. I believe that generally the throttles are used to adjust rate of descent on approach. If you increase power, you'll be able to drop the nose and maintain the glideslope. The only problem may be that your speed will increase...I'm not too sure what to do about that, other than using speedbrakes or something.

In my test I flew in at 170 kts and still to keep the approach right I had to raise the nose and it obscures the runway. I tried to land as I would do and I touched down about 300 feet from the threshold!

Manual Landings are fine.
It's the autopilot landings that are the problem for me. Everytime I lower flaps I start sinking below the glideslope. This is when flaps are at 20 and at about 170KIAS, wierd or what, and fuel is low.

I downloaded the POSKY 744 to try it out.

It was the 744 with RR engines flight dynamics 2002.5.6C.

On approach with no passenger or cargo load, 30,000 lbs of fuel, flaps 30.

Approach 170 kts, -1200 fpm, 2.5 degrees nose-up.

Approach 150 kts, -800 fpm, 5 degrees nose-up.

Could not see the airport from the default viewpoint.

Craig - Try the POSKY house colours 747, I am fairly sure it is RR powered, I had a nice approach into SXM yesterday and all was fine.

I must admit though that there had been times when I removed the panel window and viewed the landing without it, but that was the A330 and I don't do that now either.

My L/S was rather slow into SXM and I was very very heavy fuel and cargo wise and I just glided in nicely.

NB- What panel do you guys use for the B747-400 and A330?

I just checked the Aircraft.CFG file and it is indeed a RR powered bird in fact it is a RB-211-524HT to be precise. I'd give that a whirl and if that is ok, you could try copying it over to your other affected RR aircraft.

If it is a real problem let POSKY know about it, they appreciate it when we find a few bugs with the aircraft - afterall they are human.
