I just installed FS9 the other day after reinstalling WindowsXP on my computer. I opened up the program, and hit fly now, and it seems fine for a second, then the screen flickers then scrambles then goes back to normal, then locks up my entire PC. Called MS, spent hours going thru everything with no luck. Ive tried to reinstall it also. It works fine in safe mode, but the quality sucks. I have tried the latest DirectX9.0c, and the newest Nvidia drivers to no avail along with a slew of other things MS support told me to try like reinstalling drivers and turning off acceleration etc, no luck. Here are my PC specs:

AMD Athlon 1000Mhz T-bird
Biostar Mobo
WD 20GB HD
WinXP Pro
512MB PC133 Ram
Nvidia GForce FX5200 Pro with 128MB

Oh, and before I reinstalled XP the game worked fine!

Thanks,
Dan

Well judging that it was your XP that caused it, then the only thing I could think of is going out and buying another copy of XP. Maybe buying Home edition will work, if Pro is doing something wrong. I can't be certain, but its the only thing I can think of until I have another sugar filled doughnut.

What is the BEST windows program for FS9? I have XP and still get plenty of problems such as getting kicked out of my flight in the middle of it or on approach. Is it only WIndows XP? Does FSP run best on a certain windows?

The best Windows is no Windows! But cant change that much. I would say Win2000 was the best for me, but if you already have XP, stay there, if you have 98 go to 2000, if you have Win MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME , LOL!, then reformat your harddrive and install 2000!. Still sitting on a fence with this problem tho, now I can start to fly, like take off from SXM and turn around and land, but then freezes. So about 5-6 min into the game it freezes, so safe mode I am stuck in for now.

Hmm... I've got the same problem, and using the "Safe mode" gets me nowhere, FS2004 crashes nonetheless. I've updated the driver of my video card, but that also didn't improve anything...

Is there anything else that I can try? Besides getting a new video card or computer?

Frank

Try reinstalling FS9 or reinstalling DirectX9.0b, I wouldnt use DX90c, that was what I think started my problem. reinstalling your video card, etc. Still fucked on my problem tho, so I am upping the stakes if you will, and am offering a GMail account to the first person to solve my problem!!!

Well, reinstalling FS9 doesn't solve it, because I've done that three or four times already... I might try the DX9 de- and re-install test...

I've also already tried installing a different driver for my video card, and I've actually completely reinstalled WinXP - but neither worked...

Just went over and had a look - the computer I've got FS9 on actually has DX9b on it - seems MS hasn't released 9c here yet, because I just ran through the MS Update process yesterday, and nothing new was transferred or installed (at least nothing regarding DX9)...

So I guess I'll have to try that buying a new video card after all... I just really hope that that will bring a solution...

Frank

Currently, my computer looks like this (according to MS Info):

Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600
ECS Mainboard K7S5A
AMD Athlon XP 1600+
512MB RAM, two 40GB Harddisks
Audio: SiS 7012
Video: Sapphire RAGE128 PRO II, (AGP 4X/PCI), 32MB

That's the short overview of what I've got here... the CPU will soon be replaced by an Athlon XP 2400, but I doubt that that will change anything...

Put the processor upgrade on the afterburner if you will, and just get a video card upgrade, I suggest a GeForceFX series card, but if you have the cash go for both a processor and video card upgrade.

I ordered the processor last weekend, even before the problems started popping up - and I ordered a new video card today.

Actually, I thought the problem had solved itself, because I was only minutes away from landing in Vienna (coming from Toulouse) before FS9, yet again, decided to quit...  Sad

I sure hope that the video card (and cpu) will do the trick, otherwise I'm heading back to FS2002... and I'd really rather stay with FS2004...

Frank

I bought a " Gainward NVidia GeForce FX 5200 PowerPack! Ultra/680, 256MB" - might not be the most high tech card, but it'll absolutely beat the one I have now...

I really hope this is going to help...

Good choice, a good card for a low budget (i.e me!), I dunno, but it always seems people dont like the 5200 for some reason, ive had mine for almost 5 months and I love it! I dont get any jaggies or any of that, and with full 3D clouds it works fine!

I just installed DirectX 9.0c and all looks OK - FS is great at this time of night, taking off into the setting sun.

Before I upgraded, I created a system restore point in XP.

Immediately after installation, I updated the NVidia drivers to version 61.77 (27 July 04) - the DirectX 9.0c compatible version.

Craig.

Ok, so I've got the new card in now... same problem - but at least everything looks much nicer now...  Sad

I'll be trying one or two other things (I'm using the driver off the CD right now, I'll be looking at Gainward's website to see if there's something new available), but if all that fails, I guess I'll really be reinstalling FS2002...

I guess I'll be reinstalling the operating system tomorrow - thank goodness that I don't have any important files on that computer...

I just hope that that'll do some good.............

Ah, Gainward they use the same driver as Nvidia, I suggest downloading the newest driver off www.nvidia.com , that might fix up your problem. And see if MS released DX9.0c there yet, if not I can send you a copy. But my problem was finally fixed when I installed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition. I just boot to Win2003 when I want to play FS9 and boot to XPpro when I want to do everything else.

Have any of you guys monitored the temp of you cpu, mobo etc?

Also do you have any "conflicting" software running in the background on ur pc? Or some kind of virus checker that could cause problems?

I never have any probs with XP and FS2k4. Runs for hours and hours and doesnt slow down, crash or exit.

I have a similar problem as well, never used to have. I'm on WinXP Pro. But I've been installing quite a bit of Project AI. I cannot change to exterior views reason being there is a high chance (twice out of 3 times) the computer will just hang there with sound stutters. Even Ctr Alt Del couldn't help.. I've got to reboot the whole computer manually.

Any ideas?

Ok, so here's what I did yesterday...

  • Re-Installed WinXP, downloaded/installed all updates for it, installed my soundcard, installed my video card (drivers from the CD), installed FS2004, ran FS2004 -> system hangs after a few minutes

  • Installed newer drivers from Gainward's website, downloaded and installed new drivers for my soundcard, ran FS2004 -> no change, system still freezes after a few minutes

  • Decided to try something else, so I dug out one of my WinXP Home CDs - installed that, downloaded/installed all updates for it, installed my soundcard (with the newer, downloaded drivers), installed my video card (drivers from Gainward's website), installed FS2004, ran FS2004 -> system hangs after a few minutes

  • Now I thought, why not try drivers directly from NVidia (incidentally, I saw that you, Dan2002, suggested the same thing a few moments back) - downloaded them, installed them, no improvement - system freezes again.

  • Now I thought, why not try out if the problem isn't software related, but hardware related - after all, everytime the system froze up, I heard a small beep from the loudspeakers, so I thought, why not try the whole thing without the (on-board-)soundcard activated... no change, problem remains.

  • So I reactivated the soundcard and took out the AVM FritzCardPCI (ISDN-Adapter, which I use to send faxes - since I use DSL for internet access)... started FS2004, flew FRA-HAJ and HAJ-CPH without any problems...

  • So this morning I once again installed WinXP Pro, still without the ISDN-card in my PC, downloaded/installed all updates (am I glad that I've got a 3mbit DSL line and that I don't have to pay per Mega- or Gigabyte but pay a flat fee per month...  Big grin), installed the video- and sound-drivers that I had downloaded yesterday, installed FS2004, ran it, flew CPH-PMI without any problems whatsoever.

I'm not celebrating yet, but it seems the ISDN card was the problem - I certainly hope it was, because not being able to use it really isn't that much of a problem for me (I can always use the USB-ISDN-adapter that I've got here, or I can simply send my faxes from another computer).

I'm now slowly adding the other programs that I use on that PC (Anti Virus, MS Office, ...) but since that PC is really mainly for playing, I'd be able to simply throw out any programs causing problems.

Thanks for all the ideas and help guys - thank goodness, the problem now seems solved!

Regards,
Frank

P.S.: Dan2002, I've had a look at MS's website - they've got DX9c released over here, but for some reason you only get DX9b if you use the Windows-Update feature... maybe I'll try DX9c nonetheless... although - everything seems to be working now, so I'll probably wait before installing that...

Maybe I'll also try using Win2003 for FS9 as well - maybe that'll help...

Jamotcx, sorry for not responding earlier - but yes, I had been watching the temperatures, because that was one of the things I had been thinking of at first, but the values were in normal regions...

Well, if you have a copy of Win2003 go for it, its not exactly made for a PC, but its a stable o/s. But it can be expensive as hell, I know someone that runs a small buisness and switched to Linux and he gave me his copy. But you need to be moderately advanced in the windows category to figure it all out. And I would try another computer to see if it could be your copy of FS04. I am still trying to figure out why it wont start on XP, Win2003 Server isnt exactly a gaming OS, but I can change that.
