My problem:

I tried to land a few dozen times onto the carrier near HNL in an f-14, couldn't do it. Finally, I got digusted and slewed onto the deck. I then tried to takeoff and about halfway down the runway it says I crashed. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi There

Im not sure with this carrier, it all depends if its been designed to land on. Try your luck with the one just off the coast from San Francisco. If you dont already have it I suggest that you download f14a2k30.zip from Flightsim.com. Its the best F-14 model I've seen so far.

Ok, now for carrier landings. I find landing with the spot plane view alot easier because at the speed you approach the nose of the plane is fairly high and you cant see the carrier from inside the cockpit. if you set it up on a slightly higher than normal approach ange at a speed around 140-150 kts it should be pretty easy to land. Unlike a real carrier landing you will need to flare just before the deck, ie, raise the nose a bit to avoid hitting too hard. Real carrier landings are more of a controlled crash than a landing  . just before you touch down close the throttle and activate the spoilers/speed brake. As soon as your on the ground hit the brakes and you should pull up well short of the end of the deck.

Hope this helps

Regards

Greg

Thanks for the reply Night Hawk. I was using that f-14 for all of this. I have a problem of slamming into the front of the deck though   For the spot plane view, do u position the camera behind the plane or from the side?

behind is the best view, The settings I use are distance 150, altitude 20 and zoom 1. Try those, You could probably make the altitude slightly higher for a better view of the deck. I've found the biggest cause for hitting the front of the carrier is letting the speed get too low, if it gets below 130kts I suggest you go around and try again cause you need a shit load of power to accelerate again and you end up picking up too much speed and overshooting the landing point on the deck. Try that and keep practising

If you need any more help, let me know
