Help!
I think I'm totally screwed up! Please don't tell me I'm the only one doing this...
Whenever I'm driving (alone), I pretend I'm flying a plane! Off course I still obey all the traffic rules. But I do all the radio calls, run imaginary checklists (left indicator - SET) and refer to other cars out there as other airliners, quickly making up fitting types according to their color and size...
I have a white Volkswagen EuroVan, so I'm a Lufthansa Cargo B747.
Am I completely nuts, or does anybody else do the same thing?
When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead! True story.

I pretend my bike is a plane, and the fact that I am doing some aviation stuff, most of the guys here pretend their bikes are planes too. We have 'ATC' guys and have to request pushback, taxi .... from the bike stands.

Well I guess it is okay to pretend as long as you do not have to explain to the police officer that he has no jurisdiction because he is not the FAA. I did as a kid use to jump my bycycle over humps and pretend I was flying.

You could always do ATC with license plate numbers.

Nope, can't say I do that. A car is a car, and a plane is a plane. You need to take different precautions.
Anyway I did hear a story about this pilot who had just finished a long haul flight and was on his way home in his car. As he was getting tired, he nearly dosed off. Then as he came to, he saw he was heading straight for a parked car. His instincts from the cockpit kicked in, so what do you think he did?
- He floored the pedal and pulled on his steering wheel, thinking he would go over the car...
...which he didn't.

I have something similar that I do.
Occasionally, I'll be watching birds and I'll call out landing and departure clearances (i.e. A cardinal would be Northwest, a bluebird would be JetBlue, a snowy egret would be United Heavy, etc.)for all the avian traffic. The mornings and evenings are quite busy, just like a full-size airport. And I have all kinds of fun when I visit my parents, who have two bird feeders on the back porch. Just haven't figured out how to issue clearance to a squirrel yet.
Anyone else do this?

There's this guy in my residence hall that does a checklist for real when he drives, and he pretty much has a checklist for everything in life (even for crapping we think).
I did notice though that before I'd had flying lessons, I'd just jump into the car and drive. Now after 30 hrs worth of flying lessons, I get in the car, look around at the switches, the knobs, maybe turn one here and there, make sure everything should be where it is, and then start it up. I don't folllow any particular order, I just do it by habbit, without even really thinking about it or noticing it, sort of like I'm used to doing it in the plane.

"BTW if you want to pretend you're flying while driving, get a Saab. Their dashboards are as close as you'll come to an a/c."
thats because Saab make aircraft
the other day I was parked on a hill, I wanted to know what angle I was sitting at so I turned to the dash expecting to see an attitude indicator. dang... I'm not in a plane. This all happened in within a second. LOL, it was quite strange because I knew I was in a car but for some reason I thought I'd find an A/I in the dash

I do. Even when i am sitting in the passenger seat I will act like an FO. Sometimes I will do walk arounds and stuff. But while driving I dont really do it. Just before and after. But it is fun.
Aerlingus330: I do all the ancoucements the Captain would make when I fly FS too. But not the FA ancoucements. But well flying into a hub I will say the connections. Or when flying a plane with out an FA I will say some safety stuff.

Interesting, If you do all the radio calls who answeres your calls? My dad always asks me when I drive "Is this the way you fly airplanes"? Even though I have about 40 hours in a cessna I haven't convinced my dad to come and fly with me. Even after I get my private license I don't think I'll ever convince him to fly with me.

Btw, funny how so many Scandiavians are surprised to learn that Saab make aircrafts. They mostly assosiate the name with cars. Ironic as the name of the company suggests they are an aircraft manufacturer...

Well, i do do this... but it's because of my vehicle. Everyone does way to many power backs, so next time but the car in neutral and coast back, just like being pushed back by a tug. I have to do that because when i'm parked on a hill nose up my truck won't go into drive, so we roll back, onto the road and turn the engine. But, yeah, i've been convinced of calling out callouts while driving...

Ahh yes I do that too! My friend drives a new Acura TL, the dashboard looks a lot like an a/c panel! Have a look-

I often liken the rumble-strips at the end of a slip-road etc on the approach to a roundabout as being like the way a plane judders over the runway lighting on landing roll, or is that just me? You could try slamming the gears into reverse at 100mph on the motorway to experience the sensation of reverse thrust, though I suspect it may do harm to your car! Also, isn't changing down gears to slow your car down a bit like using flaps on an a/c?

I have a '99 Camaro Z28 and here's what I do everytime:
In the morning commuting to college for certification classes:
I get in my car, start it up, let it warm up 30 seconds, engage TCS (Traction Control System) since it's salty and cold out (I have it set to OFF by default)
I take it easy down to the parkway entry ramp in 3rd gear, while I'm turning onto the ramp, off the gas pedal, coasting down, I open the electric exhaust cutout (it bypasses the muffler and exhaust goes stright out unmuffled) and it makes a whinning/whistling noise so similar to a Turbofan engine nearing lite-off point. Wait for traffic to clear so I can safety accelerate under "Reduced Thrust Takeoff" which I stay under 2k RPM's until the engine is up to operating tempature.
Whenever I do this same way except in the afternoon or after the engine is at operating temp, I line up, wait for traffic to clear and do a MAX THRUST takeoff (we're talking about near the red zone RPM's )
Speaking of slamming the gears into reverse...
I was rearended on the way home from college last May the day before memorial day weekend all because of a old woman not paying attention while changing lanes in the rain.
I got a rental pickup truck since that's all the rental company had for the day and they gave it to me and charged the old lady's insurance co, it was a 2005 Chevy Colorando extended crew cab pickup truck with a I-5 engine (Yes a Inline 5 cylinders), it only had 2000 miles when I got it.
So during the first week of it, I went to my Gas Turbine class. When I got to the parking lot, I sped up to like 20mph and jammed the gear into reverse (automatic transmission) and it didn't stall out...so I gassed it up and I'm excepting to see a trail of transmission parts in my rearview mirror...it didn't make any grinding noises, it was fluid like (due to the torque converter) and it came to a stop then into backwards motion.
It didn't have the power to spin the tire into reverse while going foward, barely has power to do a burnout in 2WD mode.
Done that for the 2 months I had the pickup truck at the expense of the old's lady insurance co and brought it back with 4500 miles on it.

Sometimes, while getting on the highway, I will pretend I am on a takeoff roll and rev the engine up and just go. Then I realize I am going 95 and hit the brakes.

The first traffic light that comes after I leave home usually serves as the holding point for rwy 8 ('cause it's direction really is around 080 degrees ), and I like to do full power takeoffs when the road is clear. When coming back home on rwy 26 and nobody's behind me I usually do a full reverse thrust deceleration (by applying the brakes so they're close to blocking) and sometimes when I see the street is clear, a high-speed turnoff.
Navigating the side streets to my house I usually consider as taxiing and thus I do it slowly to avoid extensive brake wear on taxiway intersections and also to prevent running over cats.
A request for startup and pushback is a must, of course.
