Get a PC that uses a 64 bit CPU, faster is better, and 2 Gb of ram. Make sure your PC has a motherboard that will accept all the new PCI express cards, not just a slot but enough space, power and cooling.

The sky's the limit, without knowing what you're willing to spend noone can give you a sensible answer.
I know that if I could build any system I wanted I'd end up with something costing about €10.000 but I doubt that's the kind of money you're looking to spend

Be careful with the CH rudder pedals, some of the wires inside mine that run to the potentiometers on the toe brakes chafed themselves on the mechanism that connects the 2 pedals, and got severed. So go easy on them. I ended up rewiring mine completely with a heavier gauge wire and they work flawlessly now.
Is it weird I have a RemoveBeforeFlight pitot cover on my car rear view mirror?

Quoting EK156 (Thread starter): am looking to buy a new FS setup within this year to prepare for the FS X launch. I want to get the whole lot:
Dont buy a new PC just yet. At the rate technology advances, wait until after FSX comes out, so you know the system specs, and you would be able to figure out an ideal set up. For example you dont want to go and by say a 64 bit processor,to find out FSX isn't going to support it.

Well not heavier, I used the wires inside a standard RJ11 phone cord. Their plastic insulation is much stronger than the paper thin rubber the original wires in the pedals used, but the wire itself is exactly the same thickness.

RJ11 wire is like 24-gauge, pretty light, but I see where you're coming from. I've rewired my joystick innards many atimes, but thats just because they are so old.

Yeah the wires CH used had insulation so thin, you could strip them with your fingernails with very light pressure, and they were held in place on notch like protrusions which after lots of use caused the insulation to split almost and eventually causing the wire to break entirely. The RJ11 wire insulation is very tough though, fingernail doesnt even make a scratch, which holds up very nicely.
Quoting YooYoo (Reply 4): I always thought a good throttle quadrant would be a great addition to FS
CH has one of those out now which looks pretty cool.

The 64 bit processors are backwards compatible with 32 bit applications. The bigger issue is what will be capable of running Vista when it is released. The prelim specs from Dell are mentioning an nVidia 7800 card and 2GB of RAM. That's a hell of a lot of horsepower to run an OS!

I've heard worse than that. The beta will run on just about anything 900Mhz and up with 512MB of ram and up. The most important factor in this new OS will be the graphics card, without a doubt.

Quoting DeltaGator (Reply 13): I have a nVidia 7800GT slightly overclocked and it seems it will be on the low end of Vista's support. I suppose I'll be buying a new one in 9 months.
Thats supprising, because I have a backup Geforce FX5200 that runs on vista perfectly. I suppose its a driver problem.

I haven't even tried Vista with it yet. Honestly I haven't even looked at it in almost two years when it was still Longhorn. (Geez, what a long ass development cycle for an OS!) I have a friend who is using it at work for development and he says it is a resource hog and that there are few drivers for video cards right now but nVidia does have them. Having not seen the full product yet I can't speak to what is so intensive about this OS but I'm sure I'll find out soon enough.

Certainly don't buy a plasma if you fly long-haul. After a LAX-SYD run, you'll have a nice cockpit burnt into your screen.
