Hoping that somebody here can give me a bit of help! I'm looking into doing an FAA PPL in the United States this summer, possibly in California, although I am open to all other suggestions. Of course almost every flying school has a website telling me how great they are and why they deserve my hard-earned cash. Naturally, I can't visit every flying school in CA, let alone the USA, so does anybody here have any recommendations, or tips in general? Anybody kind enough to share their experiences with me?

If your willing to come to Wisconsin for a while, I can suggest a great flight school. Their located at ATW. Make sure you like your instrucor wherever you go, and switch if you think you could do better with another. That'll be the best and most cost efficient way of doing it. Also do your lessons quickly, at LEAST 1 a week, preferably 2-3. You retain your information so much better, plus you join the ranks of Private Pilotage so much quicker. Just my 2 cents worth though.

I wouldn't know about over the pond, but I'd back up what Sam was saying about making sure the INS is right for you.
When I first started with my INS he wasn't really helpful and didn't really explain things. So I changed to another guy which I knew as a friend before joining and it made it a much better experience

There's a zillion places in california, but I'd rather look in Arizona, either in PHX (Pan-AM or Westwind) or TUS (Flightsafety international). Find a place with the newer airplanes (2000 or later) with a nice avionics package. I'd guess $90 an hour in a C172 is average for most flight schools in arizona.
Or if you don't wan't to get too technical, just go to any FBO and they'll hook you up with an instructor.
You'll get better responses in tech-ops, by the way.
