Thinking about going to St Maarten for a few pics - has anyone got a recommended route from Australia (Syd)? And good spots/recommendations to stay (fairly good hotels). Best time of year?

So far a quick search shows, SYD SFO then via various options to SXM
or SYD LAX..... (Philadelphia? ) then SXM

Maybe SYD LAX JFK on QF, then onwards from there

or the long way SYD SIN LHR, AMSTERDAMN - KLM to SXM.

SYD-LAX on QF
LAX-MIA on AA
MIA-SXM on AA

There you go, and just reverse that to get home  Smile

If your staying over at LAX I can recommend the Radisson SAS Big grin

Stayed there twice, and can recommend it as well. Since the windows are double pane, they're kind of dirty, but the Top of the Radisson is a lounge with a nearly panoramic view, so you can see all four runway approaches and departures when they're landing to the west on the 24s and 25s. About the only thing completely out of our view is the TBIT, and everything west of there, but I can see most of T4.

Have fun!

Cheers,
Cameron

Thanks - seems like a good way of doing it - I might try to avoid an overnight in LAX - although it may be painful going straight through, in which case a view of the RWYS there would be good  Smile . Any suggestions re accomm in SXM?

My suggestion would be the Sonesta Maho Beach. Never been there, or to St. Maarten, but it looks like a nice hotel right on Maho, so you should be able to get a room with a great view of the approaches, and its a short walk to Maho Beach.

Cheers,
Cameron

I stayed at La Terrasse (sp?) in November & it was a nice place. One of the better parts about it spotting-wise is that at their pool (which is on the roof of the connected grocery store), there's a set of stairs which leads up to a landing where you get a great view of the end of the runway & are literally maybe 100 ft. from the runway, if that.

The Sonesta Maho Beach is fantastic, stayed there last November also ran into DeltaRules at the end of the runway.

Sonesta is highly recommended, good roof terrace for photography aswell.
