Howdy Folks,
After a couple of recent threads i decided to write a little tutorial on how to add aircraft, scenery and panels to your flightsim. Most of you will be aware of how to do this, but i know there are people who don't have a clue so this is more directed at them.
Firstly you will need to download a aircraft which normally comes in a .zip file from one of the major flightsim websites. A post containing virtually all of them can be found here:
Ive decided to use 'posky_boeing_757-200f_pw_ups_nc.zip' as the aircraft that I'm going to install, if you wish to use the exact same file as a tutorial to yourself it can be found at the following link:
Ok, once you have downloaded 'posky_boeing_757-200f_pw_ups_nc.zip' you will be presented with a compacted 'zip' file and when you open it up, you will see the following:
This is the first step you will see when you open the zip file, continue to open the folder and you will be presented with the following folders:
The Minimum you need to get the aircraft to show, or work in FS is the following folders, so check they are present;
• Model
• Panel
• Sound
• Texture
• Aircraft.cfg
• *.air (file name will depend on the aircraft downloaded)
Once you have checked all these are present, click back, and goto the folder view, where you will see the aircraft folder and the avsim readme file. Now drag and drop the folder from the zip file onto your desktop.
You can now close the zip file as this is no longer needed. The next step is to place this aircraft you just copied to your desktop, the entire folder into your main FS Aircraft Directory, usually:
Once you have dragged the aircraft folder into the FS Aircraft folder, you can now close all the windows. Now load your FS and goto your aircraft menu, the aircraft will be visable in the selection menu if you have followed the above steps.
A side note: Some aircraft from with a extra folder called "Effects" to install these, simply open the following (usually) directory:

Thanks so much Lew, I have tried for ages to try and understand how to manually download planes where it came to the point that I would sigh a great big sigh whenever I saw a file that I wanted that didn't have an installer. thank you so much.

I have another question, not regarding aircraft downloads but sceneries. I noticed through screenshts on other threads that you have added airliners on the ground. For example there is a thread right now where there is a screenshot of AMS with plenty of KLM's around. How can you add real airline traffic to FS?
thanx!
regards

There are many different ways to do it:
A free one is called Project AI which is very good and can be found here: Project AI You will have to download the free installer. On the left side of the main page you will see a link that says "Official Files," then go to "PAI Installer Packages" and then "Installer and Special Packages." Click this. The installer is the top link, that says "Download the PAI Installer." Once you've done this, it will download an executable file which you use to install all the packages. Then to find the airlines you go to, "Official Files," "PAI Installer Packages," And "Airlines." Find the airline you want, and click the logo to download. Next comes a screen that has the EULA, scroll to the bottom and click Accept. This will start your download. Once this has downloaded, unzip it, and leave the folder on your desktop for easy access; open your installer that you downloaded first. It will open a browse automatically so if your using windows XP at the top there is a dropdown menu that says Look In, you should see the folder with your airline package in it. Set it to your airline package, the folder should be called "pai_install_xxxxxx." Then hit open, select your language, and the rest should be self explanatory. I'd do an automatic installation, and check the box that says "Make aircraft invisible," so they won't show up in your Aircraft Menu in FS9, since they aren't flyable. The installation should proceed as normal, and then once its done, open up FS9 and enjoy!
There are also payware:My Traffic , Ultimate Traffic , and FS Live Traffic . Air Nav is real, live (well, 15 minutes delayed for safety reasons) traffic, so if a flight is delayed in real life, its delayed in Flight Sim. Pretty cool, whereas all the others run off of set schedules.

Just wanted to add one more thing for clarification, EWS, since it was a problem for me at the beginning.
Before you drag or copy/paste an aicraft file into the Flight Simulator 9/Aircraft folder, make sure that the only folder you drag is the one that contains
Quoting EWS (Thread starter): • Model
• Panel
• Sound
• Texture
• Aircraft.cfg
• *.air (file name will depend on the aircraft downloaded)
because say the downloaded file had a subfolder, you would have to drag the subfolder (or whichever folder contained the above necessities) directly into the Flight Simulator 9/Aircraft folder, rather than the main folder in order for FS9 to acknowledge it.
If you want an easy way to find you're new aircraft in the Select Aircraft menu in FS9 (which I wouldn't do until you've got the hang of this), you can edit which Make it appears under, as well as the Model. I like to group mine by airline.
Here is the part we're concerned with inside the aircraft.cfg file, I've used an American Airlines 767-300 from Project Opensky as an example:
This part is also important when dealing with repaints, which are other paint files that use the same model, downloaded separately.
Now...the bolded part is the part of the file that FS9 uses to place your aircraft in the menu. For example, the default aircraft come under Cessna, Boeing, Mooney etc... If you opened up any of their aircraft.cfg files you would see that under "ui_manufacturer." If you want to change where they appear in the Select Aircraft menu, just change the ui_manufacturer, ui_type, and ui_variation. You'll notice that in the Select aircraft menu there are 3 dropdown menus, and each one of these corresponds to it. So, you see here that I have "American Airlines" for ui_manufacturer, which means that when I open up flight sim, and Select Aircraft, that is what I see in the first dropdown menu (Aircraft Manufacturer), instead of Boeing (I believe that most Project Opensky files have "Project Opensky" for ui_manufacturer.") Then, after I've selected American Airlines, I go to the 2nd dropdown menu (Aircraft Model), and because I have Boeing 767-300 in ui_type, that is what I see in the 2nd one. The 3rd menu (Variation) is really only for planes that have different variations, or repaints. If, for example, I had 2 767-300s, one from...Project Opensky, and one from LevelD Simulations, but I wanted both of them to show up under 767-300 (which just prevents cluttering for the most part) this is where I would put Project Opensky or LevelD, so I knew which one I was going to use. But here, because I only have 1, I've just basically reminded myself what airline I'm using and given the registration number.
Here's what I see:
Just remember to save your aircraft.cfg if you do make any changes, but I really wouldn't mess with the rest!
Cameron, thank you very much! I followed your instructions for Project Al installaton and apparently it worked fine. I onle had time to do a quick check at EZE and there were a few AR's around. Only problem (?) was that there were only two or three aircraft with AR colours. Id this normal? Does this depend on what airline I chose to download?
Thanx!

I suppose it depends on what time of day you were there. Did you also go to Spot Plane view and look around the different terminals. Another hotkey, that you may not know about is Control + W which if you repetedly hit 'W,' while holding control, it opens up a new window, and cycles through all the planes that are in a (?) mile radius.
If you see planes, no matter how many, than it worked. Its probably more just a matter of time of day/location (although if you were at EZE then I'd say probably time of day!)

It's a sin to have flight sim and not have AI traffic. The default aircraft are horrible and the possiblilites of adding AI is endless, just try not to get addicted.

Ok, thanks.
The message you were about to post is too short and probably not of any higher value to the topic at hand. You should think long and hard before posting a message in this forum and make it detailed and a valuable addition to the topic discussed.

Just one more for the time being
Can you have Al traffic with just one airline at a time? Is there a possiblity to add, say, LAN to the traffic so I could then see AR's and LAN's at the terminals?
Thanx again Cameron and sorry for being such a pain!

Oh God Yes! You can add as many airlines at a time as you want. And the wonderful thing about these low-detail aircraft is they don't really eat up you're frame rate, either. Yes, go for 'em all, AR, LAN, AA, CO, DL etc!!!! I always started with the US airlines since that's where I flew from, but if you fly mainly in Argentina, get all the South American airlines!
