I know a couple of people who have the Maycom AR108. Javiation and Flightstore sell it for £70. It only covers VHF but it seems to be good value if you don't need it for anything else.

I think that scanners are more expensive in the UK than elsewhere, maybe due to regulations? The Maycom AR-108 can be found in Sweden for £45 ($77), in store brand new. A Uniden Bearcat UBC 92 XLT costs £95 ($166). Maybe they are cheaper in the Tax-Free at the airport if they have any.

Fair enough! I wasn't suggesting that Karan buys it in the UK necessarily, just giving a ball-park figure. Not sure it's anything to do with regulations but you might be right. It might be the same reason that certain items like cars and CDs, etc., are more expensive here!

David L, yeah maybe, and cars are not cheap in Sweden, but Denmark and Norway are ridiculously expensive.
I usually check on Ebay UK and those scanners go for more than what I pay in Sweden, maybe I should start selling them
But a more thorough search from international sellers shows that they are cheapest in Germany at 52 euro. But then there is the little thing called postage too...

But they're cheaper in Germany and France. Although when I used to sell hi-fi, quite a few Norwegians came over to the UK to buy Norwegian hi-fi (Tandberg) because it was cheaper than it was in Norway!

True. Javiation will sell cheaper for export but there'll be postage and/or import duty to pay.
It doesn't change my view that the AR108 should be considered, though, wherever it's bought.

Quoting Karan69 (Reply 6): What are other features or services that a scaner could provide barring VHF
The more expensive ones can cover UHF, HF (Short Wave), MW, etc. Mine goes from 150kHz to 2 GHz, though I've hardly ever heard anything interesting outside the Marine and Air bands (I used to be able to hear analogue phone conversations but digital's stopped that - quite rightly!). Some can hook up to a PC so you can transfer the memory contents and even perform some control from the PC.
You can also get scanners that break the memory channels into blocks so you could have a block for your local airport, another for a nearby airport, another for your next holiday destination, etc. It means that you can have all the frequencies stored that you'll need but you don't have to waste time scanning through all of them when you only want to listen to one airport.
It all depends on how many extras you want/need and how much you're prepared to pay. I think the AR108 stores 99 or 100 frequencies. Check out the Javiation and Flightstore sites for some technical details - but shop around for prices.
I'm surprised more people haven't chipped in. I don't usually get the chance to give my opinion because so many suggestions have already been made!
