– ANNOUNCEMENT –
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002
Reported by the Editors – AVSIM Online
March 13, 2001
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 is the new edition of Microsoft's highly realistic, graphically advanced flight simulator, the best-selling PC flight simulation game ever. Flight Simulator 2002 is a revolutionary release in the history of the Flight Simulator franchise. It includes real-time, interactive Air Traffic Control (ATC), stunning new scenery and visual effects using Microsoft's new "AutoGen" technology and new airplanes - including the Boeing 747-400 and Cessna's highly successful Caravan in both land and amphibious configurations.
Interactive Air Traffic Control (ATC)
For the first time, Flight Simulator includes realistic, detailed air traffic control. Through pop-up menus and key commands, you ask for permission for taxi, takeoff, en route clearances, approach, and landing, and you hear ATC's instructions.
Auto-Generated Scenery
As you fly above cities, towns, farmland, and landscapes, Flight Simulator 2002 automatically adds buildings and vegetation appropriate to the scenery below. These objects smoothly blend in at the horizon and fill the area with detail that adds unprecedented depth and reality to the scenery in FS.
Crowded Skies
While AutoGen fills in the ground details, the new AI system generates air traffic around and between airports. You're no longer the only plane in the sky.
Stunning Aircraft Models and Effects
The detail and special effects you saw in Combat Flight Simulator 2 now appear in Flight Simulator 2002. High-detailed aircraft models with subtle lighting effects and more animated parts, puffs of smoke from the tires at touchdown, splashes from floats, and improved clouds and weather add to the realism and immersion.
New Aircraft
The most popular and asked for planes in Flight Simulator history are now at your control. Now you can pilot the Cessna Caravan on amphibious floats, the Boeing 747-400, and the Cessna 172S Skyhawk.
Improved Virtual Cockpits
If you have a 3D graphics card, you can enjoy Flight Simulator 2002 from a new perspective - 3D cockpits with working instruments.
Flight Analysis
Pilots working to improve their skills and enthusiasts looking for new challenges and bragging rights can check the precision of their flying against a detailed record of their flights that uses a map and graphs to show how well they maintained course, altitude, and speed.
New Lessons and Challenging Flights
The addition of the floatplane and other aircraft opens new possibilities for engaging activities. You can be a bush pilot in Alaska, fly a 747, or earn an instrument rating in the Skyhawk. We've added many new lessons and adventures that help new users get into Flight Simulator for the first time and challenge experienced Flight Simulator pilots.
Tools for Add-on Developers
We're including gMax, a 3-D modeling tool from Discreet. Add-on developers can create scenery objects using an industry-standard format. We've also included a vastly improved Flight Dynamics Editor that makes modifying and creating Flight Simulator aircraft much easier.
Further information is expected to be available at Gamestock.

Sounds Great!
What would be the system requirments?
>1 Ghz CPU
1Gb hard drive space + 200mb RAM?
About your quote"Some People Are Still On 98!"
I'm with 98 too, 'cause I like it, I enjoy it more than 2000, so what?

Enjoy it more than 2k? Can you ellaborate (sp?) The only reason I still have 98 on my system is that 2k slows down at some areas on my old, slow, 500mhz. I was planning to uprade to something around the 1.8-2.0 ghz this summer but I may wait now till after FS2002 comes out.
Your system predictions are probably right, but remember when 2002 is actually released a 1ghz will be over a year old. You have to keep up with technology if you want to use the latest and greatest sims.

USAFHummer,
As some of the articles said FS2002 will use a lot of technology from CFS2. Hopefully this includes the optimization that gave CFS2 such good framerates .

I hope so cause CFS2 works fine on my CPU...FS2000...nope...I have a 450 Mhz Whistler...up until last year I had a 75 Mhz...so there aint a chance...I asked my dad about it...he is a cheapskate...

Great..right when all the good add-ons come on for FS2000. It'll probably be like another year till its released. I think it was just announced that it was under development.

It is set for release in the Fall of 2001, so after this summer coming up, right about the time I was planning to upgrade so I can run Fs2k perfectly .
USAFhummer,
I used to have a 75mhz too before the 500. In fact Im on it right now while my sister has to use the 500 for school. 28.8 modem . I installed FS98 on this and I get 10fps on the lowest resolution mode vs 100fps at 1024x768 on the other computer . Seems like everytime i get a new computer to run the current FS version microsoft has to go an release a new one .

Cool, it better be more optimized than FS2000...Even though I get about 90fps in FS2K.

Well, just like every other product, I would expect it to come out this fall. The reason is that Christmas sales are an EXTREMELY big time for (esp. toy) sales.
If they don't make the Christmas deadline, they'll probably spend a while more tweaking it and then we would see it in about a year.
My guess: Oct. 31, just like in 1999.
(I spent all of my halloween flying )

I think the majority of people who bought FS2000 went back to FS98 like I did. We were tired of the slow frame rates. The only reason I bought FS2000, was for aircraft that were design for FS2000 not for FS98.
The requirements for FS2000 from Microsoft are:Pentium 166 MHz,32MB of RAM. I have a Pentium II 350MHz and 64MB. FS2000 was the only program I had problems with running on my computer. I saw no reason to replace my computer, the only upgrade I will do is get more memory.
Flying FS98 is a whole lot more enjoyable to me. I hope Microsoft states accurate information on running FS2002.

N907,
People with up to date computers use Fs2000. At times I get fps as low as 5 (FFG DC-10 ) but I still stick with 2k cause it is 2000000000x better. A 350mhz was already a year old when FS2000 was released.

I'm running a PII 233, 64RAM, 6.4Gig HD... and not a chance with FS2K. I went back to FS98 after spending about 10 minutes with the lastest version. $60 down the hole...oh well.
Hopefully by the end of the year, I'll have a super-fast system that can handle FS2K02.

I think I'll stick with my FS2K Pro for a while. I'm just beginning to get add ons and downloads, including FSNavigator.
