Ok, I am flying from Melbourne to Adelaide. Cold start with a PMDG 747 and by the time an hour is up I am turning final for Adelaide's runway 23 and then the computer shuts down. Just like that. Completely with no warning. Same thing happened on the same flight with the Level D 767. All Power management tools are set to "never" and no screen saver is enabled. The battery on my ACER Ferrari is anywhere between 97 and 100% running from the mains. No new software installed apart from the new sound package from PMDG.
Anyone else have this problem? I would save the flight and I can with the 767 but it is a real pain with the PMDG 747.
Could heat have anything to do with the problem? If it does then try running the laptop on a different surface. Also closing down all uneeded programs that run in the background may help. That must be very annoying especially after 1 hour of flying!! Good luck with the problem,
Matt

Thanks for that Matt - it could be heat as it is an AMD64 CPU and it does run hot although it has never happened before now. It is frustrating as it seems to die just as the ILS comes alive.

Has happened to me twice. I think my PSU (Power Supply) is a bit weak, only 350 w and I have a AMD64 X2 4200+ and a Geforce 7600. But I will soon buy a new one.
Noone in Africa has still checked my A-net proflie.

It's a typical symptom of overheating, either of the CPU or GPU.
Is it a bit hot over there at the moment? If so the higher outside air temperature will cause the PC to have more trouble shedding excess heat, causing it to heat up more under load.
Cleaning the internal and external fans and moving things so there's more room around the case can help a lot as well.
If the PC is high up on a shelf or desk, you might consider placing it on the floor, if it's in a cabinet place it on the floor next to it.
If things continue to run hot, get a portable fan and blow cool(er) air at the PC.
If that doesn't help get a portable airco unit (we ran several of them at the office to keep our servers from crashing during the last hot summer).

For a laptop, a cooling pad works great...I've got a laptop with the AMD 64 CPU as well and it tends to run in the hot side while flying. Recently I got a Targus Chill Pad that goes underneath the computer. It has two internal fans and several venting grooves that work to pull the heat away from the computer. The cooling fan on the computer used to run on high ALL THE TIME but now it rarely needs to run, even during intense FS sessions...at $10 it was a great investment! I don't know whether it is my mind playing games or not, but with the computer running cooler, I seem to be getting a couple more frames per second as well...

Thanks everyone and nice to hear from you again Jeroen. The Laptop is running hot as it always does. It is an AMD 64 chip and is prone to this so I will go and check out a cooling pad as per the good advice of Cptspeaking. Once again, thanks everyone.

I have had this problem. I uninstalled everything to do with Flight Sim, reinstalled it and now it works fine. When I say everything I mean planes, scenery, flight planners etc etc.

Fixed the problem. I bought a 3 fan thin aluminium heat pad for $30 Australian. Powered by a USB port it is has changed the laptop from one that was too hot to touch to one running as cool as you like and there are no more crashes. Thanks Cptspeaking for your advice.
