When I try to load FSX, I double click on the icon on my desktop as I normally do, then the first screen comes up (the one before the game has loaded). This is where the problem is. The timer appears (as normal) but the game does not load! This started happening yesterday but before then there has been no problems. So my question is...., Has this happened to anyone before and how did you fix it?

Hasn't happened to me, but I would suggest uninstall and reinstall. That seems to cure most problems.... (kind of a pain in the arse when we're talking about a 15gb install though.....)

How long are you waiting? Sometimes it takes a solid 5 minutes to start up on my machine.
