I wonder how these will handle FSX!

Chip-maker Nvidia Corp. unveiled two graphics microprocessors that offer twice the horsepower of previous models and what the company touts as a design milestone: a multitasking brain capable of efficiently handling a variety of non-graphics calculations.

The Santa Clara-based company said the target market for its GeForce 8800 graphics processing units, or GPUs, will initially be hardcore gamers looking for improved graphics and realism. The graphics cards that are powered by the new chips will sell for $599 and $449.

The new chips are based on a revamped architecture that makes it easier for programmers to focus on artwork and textures instead of tackling programming bottlenecks, the company said.

They also boast twice the number of transistors — 681 million per chip.

Couple that with the release of Windows Vista on January 30th, and we could very well be seeing some decent framerates out of FSX!

Who will be the first to upgrade???

Being that these are the first cards to actually support DirectX 10, I would say very well!

...And the speed doesn't hurt.  biggrin

But it sure will be useless on my Windows XP 64-bit system. I would have to go to Vista  Sad I sure wish they released Direct X 10 for Windows XP 64-Bit

I'm waiting for the next line to come out...the price will almost certainly be better, and I've been told that the first iteration of these kinds of things almost always have some bugs that make them a bit of a pain.

Vista will have a 64-bit version. AFAIK, it'll launch along with the regular versions in the first quarter of 2007.

I am happy with my XP 64bit and I dont want to reinstall another windows OS just to use DX10, its kind of silly and waste of money.

I agree with you there, but in Microsoft's defense, the XP 64-bit user base is comparatively minuscule. Is it even distributed by OEMs?

There are very good reasons why DX10 wont make an appearence on older versions of Windows, and none of those reasons are silly or a waste of money.

For the top end, yes. An entry-level quad-core would probably be about $400. That's my best guess anyway,  Smile

I don't think a quad core would have much advantage for video games/home use than a dual core.

Quad core is probably going to be aimed at professional graphics designers.

Dx10 cards should give a better framerate for FSX - remember also that a fast CPU is still essential or it'll just bottleneck, although most CPUs on sale now are pretty fast now.

When coded for, quad core will be a fantastic addition to the gaming scene.

For example, the Source engine (Halflife 2, Counterstrike et al) will distribute various subsystems across cores as load allows, and this includes:

1. main game thread
2. physics engine
3. visual engine
4. sound engine
5. artificial intelligence

If a quad core system is available, it offloads as required, allowing more of each to be done without interference with the other subsystems.

Will my AMD Athlon 4400+ X2 bottleneck a DX10 card?

If it does, I'll shave my head. biggrin  (in other words, no)

You'd need something like a Pentium 4 or Athlon XP to do that, IMO.

What is the best graphics card for FSX right now? I guess there is no point in buying one yet though until I have Vista installed right?

Nvidia have just released their 8800 series cards, which are DX10 compatable. Dont know why you think theres no point in buying one until Vista tho, they do work under DX9 and XP perfectly well, you arent going to have less performance.
