Kai Tak Model Airport

For those of you who have created a model airport in 1:500 scale before. Ay tips? I hope to have a model of Kai Tak airport next summer built in my new model room. The Runway will be 8.6 feet in length and the arpon area will be 6.5 feet wide at its widest length. I also plan utilizing a VAST array of legos thati have to help create the buildings and terminal surrounding the airport.

My favorites are the Ansett and American models.

Nice thing, I have never done anything with die cast part. How does that work?

It is around 50 cm long (20 inches) and 55 cm wide (22 inches). It was challenging to put it together, also the first one that I used the airbrush on. The wheels took forever, same with the engines. I also plan to build in in SQ and QF livery, maybe also EK, and if I find the decals for that, in KE livery.

I actually found the 1/144 to be cheaper than the 1/200. The latter I've only seen from Hasegawa, and Japanese kits are very expensive over here.

If you want to build 1/144, the best and cheapest are from Revell Germany. However, they might be more expensive in the US, due to transport and exchange rate. Their models include:

A319, A320, A321
A310
A330-300 (with GE engines, however they are not made anymore. The LTU had also P&W engines, but has been stopped even earlier.)
A340-300 (Has been stopped some time ago, might be re-launched in Austrian special livery.)
A380, livery of the first flight and EK livery

Antonov 124

Boeing:

737-800
767-300
747-400

Also Fokker 100 and Concorde

Another manufacturer is minicraft. They are more expensive (at least over here) and not so good, but still OK.

They have:

737-3/400
757-200
777-200
MD-80

For 777s, there is also Doyusha from Japan, hellish expensive but good quality.

There are also other manufacturers and many different decal producers. However, a lot of things do not exist, like 777NG, or A340NG. Sometimes you need to do a lot of work and apply extra parts, for example when you want to make an A332 out of the A333 kit.

I think I know the market good, so maybe you tell me what you want and I tell whether it exists and where it is available.

It's not that good, I made it before I had the airbrush. I was hoping for LTU to get some A343s, then I would make that one with the airbrush, using an A343 kit and the A333 decals. But it looks like they are moving away from their plan to get those.

I think that it is actually a fully assembled model. My mom is buying it for me as a late present, so we'll have to see.

Thanks for that info. They are cheaper, as I said above, so I might look into them. It'll be nicer to have bigger models, too. Plus, I don't have a Concorde and have not seen many kits for 1:200 ones.

My very first ones were made like that...and they looked so terrible...that's why I have so many ANAs and JALs...easier to paint back then!

There is a manufacturer called "Airfix", they have a TriStar (TWA and old Cathay liveries) and a 732 with Air France decals. 733 and 734 you could get from Minicraft.

Hmm, that might be something to look into...I wonder about weight issues though...once, on a 727, I put it all together and it was tail heavy...kept flipping onto the rear wheels...had to go take it apart and put a weight in the back.

Weight is an issue there, yes. I sprayed my Kuwait A340 with clear paint after I was done, and it is now a lot heavier than my AC A340. (I'll measure that someday.)

Models often have the problem with falling on their tail. Can be balanced by putting something in the front before assembling the halves. My A380 still barely touches the ground with the front wheels, despite me putting in the 50 grams that the manual says. (However, the one in the photo in the manual seems to have the same problem.) I used to put chewing gum in the halves, but now I use plasticine.

Looks nice, the MD-11 is a good-looking plane. Someday I plan to build one of either AA or LT. However, they are hard to do in 1/144, because there is no real kit. Except Welsh models, but theirs are hard to assemble and very expensive. Or a conversion of a DC-10.

Thorben told you. Airfix makes them both, but L1011 is not accurate. If you buy 732, use BA decals, because AF colours are too light.

I think that is really so much, cutting an A333 to an A332 is already enough work.

The TriStar comes with decals of TWA and Cathay, not BA. The 732 is the thing that comes with BA decals. I dont know if there are actually TriStar BA decals somewhere. Ive never seen any.
