In my opinion, you definitely need more CPU power. I've been tweaking FSX for months now, and I've come to the conclusion that FSX is heavily CPU dependant. I recently installed a top end video card (Radeon X1950 XTX) and found very little improvement from a framerate point of view - my processor seems to be holding things up (Athalon 64 3800 - 2.4 gHz). I've played around a little with overclocking my system, and found some improved framerates that way. Unfortunately, my motherboard is quite unstable when it has been overclocked, so I cannot leave things at the higher settings. Rumor has it that MS is issuing a patch soon (SP1) and it's supposed to address some of the performance issues - let's cross our fingers and hope for the best.....

cheers

Does upgrading a processor mean new motherboard and does that mean re-installing windows?

Sorry Noob with processers!  Smile

Most likely, it will require a new motherboard. Normally, it wouldn't mean a reinstall of Windows, as you aren't messing with the hard drives.
Some more memory might be in order, as well.

Is your memory a single 1GB stick or 2 512MB? Memory isn't THAT expensive (and I know that's a relative term).

The processor sounds good. It will definitely mean a new motherboard for you.

Then a matching 1GB stick would be in order.  Smile
