The 70-200 VR is an outstanding lens with very good optics. I don't own one but have used one a couple of times. I've never seen a bad review of it.

I use the 80-200 f2.8 Nikkor http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/80200.htm which has been reviewed by many all over the net. The 80-200mm obviously doesn't have VR, which can be helpful in a long lens but to be honest I just can't justify the extra money for a slightly wider VR lens. The 80-200 is probably one of Nikons best lenses ever and is a bargain next to the 70-200.

If your budget is $1500 you will have money left over to get another decent lens.

The 70-200 reviewed, http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70200vr.htm

It is an incredable lens, although for my situation I had to go with the Nikon 80-400 VR.

Any of the high-range Nikon lens are amazing.

I've got a 70-200, and it died last night. The focus won't pick up at all. When it works, it's a beautiful lens, the optics are outstanding. When it focuses, it's lightning fast, although slower than the 300 f/2.8, 400 f/2.8, 600 f/4 and such. It's a great lens though. I love it, but at the same time, its caused me a lot of missed shots because of some sort of defect in mine.

That being said, does anyone have any ideas on how to fix the problem? I'm already out my D1X, so my camera situation has gone from bad to worse.
