Morning all,

I am currently waiting on my new machine, Dell Dimension with lots of extras, and I am changing my editing software. I have a very old copy of Photoshop version 5.5 on my current machine and want to get a new copy of elements to replace it. But I cant seem to see the difference between elements V3 and V4. Can anyone enlighten me as to wait to differences are and if there is any significance improvements in V4? Thanks very much

Regards
Colin

Colin,

There is a review on V4 in the Dec 05 issue of Digital Photo Magazine. From what I can see there are no major advantages to V4 over V3. V4 does include a RAW converter but I'm not sure if V3 had this. I still use V2 and am quite happy with it. From the DP article I would quote the following

"... in V4 image files must be opened in the Organiser's library before they can be properly browsed. This means you can't browse a CD or a hard drive hull of pics until you've imported the files into the system."

"Also new to V4 is a creation Setup to output your work as greetings cards, web galleries or photo albums"

Main features added to the editing side :

"The Magic Selection Brush and Magic Extractor are billed as quick ways of making selections and cut outs. If you're not worried about being too precise and you have a contrasty background then they work fine"

"Elements 4 features a Defringe tool" (Used to reduce harsh edges on cut outs)

"The skin tone adjustment tool makes a universal colour change to the image"

"The red-eye removal tool can now be activated when images are downloaded direct from the camera"

"the straighten tool levels horizons quickly by rotating the image automatically "

It seems to me that the latter feature is the only thing of much use in terms of editing aircraft photographs. The final verdict of the article states :

"Elements 4 is more of an evolution than a revolution when compared to version 3 and it's not really worth upgrading if you already have Elements 3 unless you need RAW support for the latest cameras"

Hope this is of some help. I'll keep plodding along with V2 - with my level of editing skill it is as much complication as I can handle !

All the best,

John

John's comment is correct, "... in V4 image files must be opened in the Organiser's library before they can be properly browsed. This means you can't browse a CD or a hard drive hull of pics until you've imported the files into the system."
An inconvenience to say the least.

On the plus side the RAW file converter for Canon is the best that I have ever used. Generally the automatic process is spot on first time.

I made the decision not to uninstall PSE2 so I can browse my photo CDs.

I miss the Windows folder Explorer style of the browser.

Adobe have tried to make PSE4 with all manner of bells and whistles but seem to have lost touch with what it is all about.

I tried PS Elements 4, but quickly reverted back to 3 when I discovered File Browser had been deleted. I saw no new features which provided a compelling reason to learn a new way of doing things.

Hi there,

did you purchase an upsell version of PSE4.0 or a full version?
If you have an upsell version of PSE4.0, you need to have 2.0 installed.

If you got a full version of PSE4.0, you can uninstall 2.0 first if you like.

Thanks for the help

If you have a full version of 4.0, and to save space, you can uninstall 2.0 first if you wish to.
