Topic: Canon Announces 800mm/f5.6 And 200mm/f2 Username: BuyantUkhaa Posted 2007-10-16 03:28:06 and read 8505 times.Quote: Canon announced the development of two all-new telephoto lenses for use with its EOS SLR cameras: the EF200mm f/2L IS USM*/** and the EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM*/**. The Company will exhibit prototypes of the new lenses at PhotoPlus Expo (booth #318), taking place at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, October 18 to 20.
The new Canon EF200mm f/2L IS USM and EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM, both of which are L (luxury)-series lenses incorporating a high-performance Image Stabilizer, feature optical systems utilizing special optical materials such as fluorite to correct chromatic aberrations, making possible high-resolution, high-contrast shooting performance.
|

Quote: The Canon EF200mm f/2L IS USM, targeting users who seek a brighter lens for portraiture and indoor sports photography, realizes a large aperture of f/2. The EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM, expected to deliver telephoto performance surpassing the current top-of-the-line EF600mm f/4L IS USM super telephoto lens, is being developed in response to requests from users working in the fields of sports and news photography who are looking for a high-performance lens that offers a longer focal length. |

Strange though that they discontinued the 200m/f1.8 only to then come with a 200mm/f2. The old one may not have has IS, but still...
800mm will be cool for the moon-shooting guys

Hey - 1/3 of a stop to add IS elements. Is that bad or what? f/1.8 with IS would be much more difficult to manufacture.
And of course, Canon made those lenses 'cause Nikon makes 200mm f/2 and 800mm f/5.6 and Canon did not - before.

It's the same size as the 600mm f/4 IS so I guess it'll be similarly weighed. It means you only need Suresh.

Well then why doesn't Canon make the 18-200 IS? It would be guaranteed massive seller! And then I can at least get rid of my Sigma...

Topic: RE: Canon Announces 800mm/f5.6 And 200mm/f2 Username: Dvincent Posted 2007-10-16 08:46:21 and read 8353 times.Ultra-long lenses have their drawbacks, as anyone who owns them knows. Atmospheric effects start taking their toll the farther away from a subject you are, and your handling of the lens itself becomes critical. Buying an 800mm monster is no guarantee of getting a sharp image if you're still fairly far away...
As far as the discontinuation of the 200mm f/1.8, it's possible that the old lens design had now-banned materials used in its construction (See Europe's new regulations against certain substances) and the 200mm f/2 has a new optical design that doesn't need these elements. |

Nope Dan, the 200 1.8L was discontinued simply because it did not sell enough to justify further production. This was 5 or 6 years ago already I believe. They claim that the main problem was that simply the market was not as big, and now with the DSLR's selling better than ever before I'm sure they'll sell very well.

I was just speculating, as this was the fate of some old lenses (hence the it's possible).

LOL. Replace the 600mm with the 800mm? That doesn't make much sense to me.

A statement I can't find in the press report either.
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0710/07101601canonteles.asp
But I guess the Canon rep knows what he is talking about.
What is the point of the image stabilizer on the 800 anyway ?
The 600 is close to 5.5kg already and I expect the 800 to be 1 kilo or so heavier which will restrict hand held use quite a lot and the stabilizer doesn't work on a tripod so............. or did they find a way to solve the problem ?

And if you do find an answer better have a look at this first......... 300-800/5.6

And the 600 is still pictured here. Just a quick note...SURPASSING does not mean REPLACING.
I guess we will have to wait and see.

I am not waiting for a 600 let alone a 800

€5000+ for the Nikon, so I expect around €5000 for the canon if they ever make it still is a shitload of money where I come from .

Topic: RE: Canon Announces 800mm/f5.6 And 200mm/f2 Username: Eksath Posted 2007-10-17 17:48:28 and read 7982 times.I would rather own a 400mm and a 800mm than a 400mm and a 600mm.
That combo would be more useful for me than the latter because when i use my 600mm, I could also use the 800mm for the same job as well and be even closer. The 600mm is to big for hte 400mm stuff. So i could have more seperation in the ranges and more overall range in my lens lineup. |

That is exactly the point and the explanation that guy gave me.....lot's of photographers do want the extra focal length.
If they discontinue the 600mm f4....we"ll see.
This is just speculation, but since the 1200mm f5.6 is no longer available / being produced....they were looking for a product which closes the gap.
Vasco
p.s. I'd be interested in the specs (pricing and weight) and what Nikon has to say.........(it took them years to finally equip their telephoto lenses with VR........!
