Are the Opteka Telephoto lenses worth looking at? I'm wanting a lens where I can get decent pictures of planes flying at 30,000 feet or so. I'm not looking at getting the pictures on Airliners.net per se,but want a picture that I can tell what the aircraft is.

They don't get particularly good reviews and you get what you pay for, so don't expect much.

If you want to photograph planes at 30kft then a 400mm is probably the minimum focal length to get the aircraft a reasonable size to identify it, and then you're looking at A330/A340/B767/B777 sized planes.

To give you an idea of possibilities, these are with a Tokina 400mm lens

This with 70-300mm lens with 2x converter (had to use manual focus since AF can be affected by converters) Lateish in the afternoon so the shutter speed was a bit low as well.

Identifying what? The reg? Airline?
Sometimes I can see the reg with my 200mm+1.4 converter. To identify an airline all you need is 200mm and zoom in on the image afterwards. Stabilizer helps a lot though

Looks like I need to just get a converter for my 70-300mm lense. I only want to be able to tell whether the plane is a 757,A320,etc. Is there a converter that is better than others? I have a Canon Rebel XS camera, and Canon lenses.

For that lens the only option is a 3rd party extender like Kenko or Soligor, where Kenko is the prefered one. Also choose MC7 before MC4 as that one has more optic elements.
