There are a couple of threads currently ongoing with discussions about the current technical issues, so will consolidate any questions and updates here.

As has been discussed, there have been some technical issues with the database related to the maintenance done to the site over the weekend. Instances of accepted images disappearing from the database and reappearing in the queue, and images simply disappearing from the queue have been widely reported. As the issues have not yet been fully resolved, screening has been stopped for the past eight hours, and will not likely start again for another eight or ten hours. By that time, we hope all the issues will have been resolved, and images that had been accepted, will again be visible on the db.

There is not much more information to pass along other than that, but if you do have any questions, we will do our best to answer. We will update when screening resumes again. Thanks for your patience everyone.

Thanks for the information Dana, I had 3 photos in the queue for the 23rd, 1 of them has disappeared.

Thanks

As of this time, we do not need updates as to how many images you are missing, or from what dates. We are expecting everything will be reset to normal and images returned to the queue or the db when the final fix is in place.

If I were to submit an image to the upload queue now, do you know if it would be affected by the current issues? I've been holding off on a couple of images because I'd rather not increase whatever problems are going on right now.

As far as we know, newly uploaded images should not be affected, but if you wish to be safe, it would be better to hold off until everything is 100% again.

Brief update: you may see a few images being added, as we will attempt to process priority requests, which shouldn't be affected. Screening has not yet resumed on the regular queue.

Just a question, since I've noticed that also a picture of mine has been involved in this issue... I mean, a previously added picture that has gone back in the queue and the image could not be retrieved since it displays "default image".

Well, apart from this, may I ask you how will this thing be carried out?
Will the former accepted pictures be restored into the DB automatically or will a new add needed?

thanks in advance

Yeah, I read about that in your first post... I am sorry but I think I wrote my question in the wrong way, since I have realized that it is quite ambiguous and easy to be misunderstood.
(I am sorry for this...)

So, just to clarify, I meant which would be the "policy" applied in the worst case that some pictures would be lost?
MAybe a re-add with the "evidence" of the confirmation acceptance mail?

Hi teopilot, should any images be lost we'd treat them as priority for reupload and most likely as you note, confirmation email with the request.

Some testing will be done and images will be seen to be added to the database as troubleshooting occurs. These images will likely not be images we have requested re-uploads on but those that are already in the queue. Some will be priority images sent through to the priority team as noted by Dana. Please try to exercise understanding and patience as the team works through this.

It's likely that the "added today" list may not reflect what's actually going on, since at lest one of the ones in that list is a shot that I remember as previously accepted. I'd say wait until there is an announcement from the crew - I'm sure they'll post about the resolution of the problem when it happens.

Okay, that explains quite a bit, I saw an image in queue of which I was pretty sure it had been accepted a while ago. During the day, I kind of accepted the thought that it was just my mind going numb

Good luck getting stuff in order again, from experience I know that database management is tricky business! Better to take your time and get it right than to rush to a solution and risk making things even worse.

Another short update:

You will soon see new images slowly starting to be added. We will only be screening images submitted after the 20th, as images before then could possible be affected. The situation with images added but then disappearing from the db will hopefully be resolved at the same time as the missing images from the queue, but it looks like it may take a little longer than hoped.

Again, thank you all for your patience with this.

So if we have photos pending in the upload queue from May 20th, will these be discarded or just screened at a later date? Also, when this is all fixed, will the view counter be re-set to the correct values prior to this issue?
Thanks

They will be screened later. We are starting from the 21st just to be safe. The affected images go up until ones submitted on the 19th, but we didn't want the possibility of affected images getting mixed in. Once things are fixed, images from the 19th/20th will be the first to be screened.

Not 100% sure, but I assume this will be the case. To be honest though, view counts are a low priority compared to restoring the lost images.

Like Dana said, they are working on having things back to normal so we will be noticing things like this. The best thing is for all of us to wait and let them work on it and also wait until they come back and tell us everything is ok. So let try to be calm cause all of these questions dosen't help.

Please kindly read the first couple post. The site is currently having problem with the database and it is being work on. My advice is wait until everything is back to normal with the database and try to upload again.

This is quite normal when synchronising databases, if a write operation fails the system will perform a roll back to it's previous state, so images can seem to pop in and out of the queue.

There is nothing else we can do right now but wait patiently until we get an "All clear" from our team of developers.

Not wishing to add to anyone's burden and this is possibly unrelated, but a couple of weeks ago I did have some trouble getting a particular image to upload. After pressing the 'OK Done' button everything seemed normal. No warning messages, but the image simply did not show up in the queue. I had to try three times to get the image in the queue. I thought nothing of it at the time. A similar thing happened a couple of weeks prior to that incident, but I put it down to user error.

I wish the crew and developers all the best in resolving the current crisis. My situation is that images I uploaded on May 23, 24 and 25th have disappeared from the upload queue. About 6 photos are involved. Those I uploaded on the 26th and after are on the upload queue.

It is now 6.15am Eastern time and there is no upload queue for May 31, 2012 (2012-05-31).

I had one that I uploaded on the 15th and was rejected on the 24th added back into the queue. I have since deleted it since deleted it since I thought the upload issues were the result of it being added back into the queue giving me 5 instead of the 4 that I currently have. The one I uploaded on the 25th also has the problem that some other people have been having and it disappears and reappears in the queue.

Dana, just curious - what do you see at the screening end as to how many are in the queue? Has the glitch affected what is presented to you guys? ie I know I have 15 in the queue but what's shown to me fluctuates between 11 and 15. Does it remain at 15 as it should or does it change too?

Hi Nicholas,

As far as I know, the queue should be stable as of right now, discounting of course those images uploaded before the 20th. I currently see 11 images of yours in the queue. When was the last time you saw 15 images, and when were the four that disappeared uploaded?

For screening, things have now settled down, and we simply await a resolution for the missing images uploaded before the 20th.

Earlier today. I looked again just now and see 11 again. All uploaded images of mine (including the 4 which are missing) were uploaded after the 20th. I'll check again later because it has given me both on random occasions - there was one time when i checked my upload queue photos and I had 15 there, went back to the photography homepage and clicked on the upload queue stats, saw 11 there.. Went back to my upload queue photos and it had dropped back to 11.

The four which are reappearing/disappearing were uploaded on the 25th.

Ok I tried again and came with the same result - first time 15, second time 11. Gave me a chance to find out what ones were 'missing' the second time around- Upload ID: 4353857,9,62,65. At least I've now saved a document so I know exactly which ones might not be screened!

Hi Nicholas,

I have periodically been checking your queued images over the past few hours, and keep seeing 11 images each time. If anyone else would like, I can check their queue as well to see if the problem can be replicated on our end.

Funny. I suppose you don't have the ability to search individual upload IDs then.

What I suggest is going away from A.Net for a little while then later reopening it and seeing if it changes. It seems that's what happens in my case - if I recheck after too short a period, I'll get 11 displaying.

But thanks for trying to help us.. Everyone I know who uses this site wants these stupid problems to go away.

My upload limit is 10. It says 9 are in the queue, but I'm certain that I had filled my upload limit. I'm not sure which one is missing. I suspect it is a singular upload on the 24/05/12, as I had noted that I had uploaded at least an image (or two) per day, as of the 22nd of May. The 24th May date is missing, so I'd go with that.

I will follow this up with the developers when they come back online in a few hours, but I think that it is relatively safe to assume that since I was unable to see any of the 'ghost' images, it is quite possible they are gone from the queue. For those of you who I couldn't see any images at all, I will definitely be checking again in a bit to confirm this. In any case, not much can be done until morning California time, when full work will resume.

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 61):

+1 for the entire crew.

It is beginning to look at this point like those images lost from the queue/database from the 14th & 15th will either be a real pain to recover, or even possibly not recoverable at all. This has affected hundreds of people, including screeners - even myself (though I only lost one image). If it turns out the images are not going to be recovered, we totally understand how much of an annoyance it will be but even doubly so from our end. You may have to re-upload the images and wait for them to be screened again, but so will we, and we have the extra kick in the pants that all the hours spent screening those images might have been a total waste of time. We are still hoping they will be recovered, but are bracing ourselves for the chance they might not be. If that turns out to be the case, we will let you know to start uploading them again.

My experience is a little different. After being away with work all week, I've come back to discover only one change with my photos. I had a photo accepted last week (24/5) and featured on facebook and top 5 of the day. It had 10 000+ views.
However it now shows up as being rejected (soft) on the 30/5.

Here is the shot in my rejection bank,

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...1336985095.4076sausten20321280.jpg

Not sure if it went straight there or back to the que and got refected during the second screening. Will this one be restored to the database???

Not expecting an immediate answer... just throwing it out there.

Steven,

What you mentioned is what seems to have happened,It seems the image was previously accepted and disappeared from DB and returned the Que again,Seems a screener accidently rejected the shot when it returned to the screening que,We were trying to avoid screening these shots but a few may have been screened and seems one of yours got screened.

As Dana stated above it is looking like images from those dates effected may not be recoverable but there is still hope.

My "upload queue statistics" page shows I have 13 uploads (should be 15), the error is for 5-25 uploads, on this page it says I have 2 (should be 4), funny thing is if I click on 5-25, then it shows 4 pictures there right now, but sometimes it did show only 2 pics when I checked earlier. so I don't know whether those 2 are really in the queue or not.

Late last night the count of my photos seemed to match...but now its off again. Photo search shows 5,992 but upload page says 5,989 for a difference of 3. One was added yesterday so its like a net loss of two. The one added is there. I would have to take the time to go thru my files and see if there are any logged as uploaded which aren't there anymore.

The thing that strikes me is if the backend of the upload system is so outdated and clunky from the old days with Johan as Dana put it, now for a few years this site is run by a professional web company so why hasn't this been fixed?

I have received an email from Gary Watt asking me to re-upload an already accepted image that has apparently gone astray. I have corresponded briefly with him but am still unsure about what to do as the image appears to still exist as normal in the database.

The image is question: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Sky-A...d=4aece5d74a3d02a6ca854c48f6e5a606

Now if I really do need to re-upload this, am I to use the re-upload function or do I simply upload as normal with a note to priority screening? Furthermore, I have an additional three accepted images that seem to have vanished from the database. They briefly appeared back in my pending queue but have sinced been erased from there. No mention has been made of these other three so I'm just curious as to whether they've been overlooked or indeed if they'll be attended to once this bug is completely sorted?

I don't mind either way but I could just do with knowing the score.

Cheers,

Karl

Karl, to my knowledge you were asked to reupload because the accepted image was lacking in quality. We will often accept priority images that are below standard because they are newsworthy, and ask for the photographer to re-upload an improved version after the fact. I see you were sent an email almost two weeks ago, not from Gary, but from Peter. If we start encouraging photograhers to start re-uploading them again without knowing for sure if they are complety gone than it creates another problem if they re-appear as we will have the que flooded with doubles as some will upload them and may not have time to check or even forget to check their uploads again before they are screened.

Hi all,

Update heading into the weekend.

- upload problems have been resolved, you should no have problems adding images.
- personal upload limit reached with personal queue apparently not full: still looking into this one, but might not have an answer until next week.

and the big one:
- lost images that were uploaded prior to the 20th: the images that were in the queue and disappeared are gone and will not be retrieved. You can feel free to upload these again.
- images that were previously accepted, but disappeared from the db: there is still a strong possibility that these will be retrieved, so please do not re-upload these yet. Again, this will probably take until next week to be resolved, but we are more hopeful now that there will be a positive resolution.

We will update when more information is available, so no need to post or email the screeners directly about images missing from the database.

Thanks again for your patience & understanding, and have a good weekend!

Dana, as I have written before, I had two images in the queue, that kept popping in and out, so the number of pics in the queue was sometimes 15, sometimes 17. However, when I checked the upload page, it always indicated the number of pics in the queue as 17. Than means that if, for example, I had a 17 pictures upload limit, I wouldn't have been able to use the tho slots even when I only apparently had 15 pictures visible.

What I did, I just kept refreshing my Upload Queue page until I had 17 visible again, and then I just deleted those two ghost pics from the 25th, that caused trouble, and uploaded them again. Now I have 17 there again, and they are stable.

Of course, it is not a solution for the whole problem, but could work for those, who want to use their slot. Just keep refreshing the Upload Queue page until the missing shot pops out, and then delete it. May take a while, though.

What about the images uploaded on the 24th and 25th?

I did re-upload a better version of the photo as Peter requested. Gary's email (yesterday or the day before) specifically stated that the image had been lost due to the problems and that I needed to re-upload it; however it didn't say how exactly and I've had no response to a request for further information.

Aside from that, there is a new issue (at least with my queue anyway) that's surfaced only this afternoon. If I go into 'my upload queue' I see 29 images, however if I refer to 'my upload statistics' it claims I have 29 but actually only lists 27 (two uploaded 24th May seemingly gone).

Apologies if I'm covering old ground but I thought the queue issues had been mostly addressed?

Cheers,

Karl

So 5 pics missing !

Hi all,

Update:

- for those of you experiencing maxed out upload limits apparently without having your queue full, the discrepancy should correlate to the number of accepted images that you are missing from the database. Johan, if I can use you as an example, you are missing 5 from the database; those five are what are taking up the extra five spots in your queue. Hopefully the lost five images will be restored to the database soon, and the five upload slots will open again.

- for those of you missing images from the queue, or seeing them pop in and out, Andrei's fix of simply deleting them and re-uploading them should work to rectify the issue; otherwise, the problem is still being looked into and will need another day or two to resolve. If screening has passed the date when they were uploaded, you can probably assume they are lost, and can re-upload them. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Hello,

Just to let you know my problem:

I've uploaded 10 pictures on the 24th May but the screening of that day has passed already and from what I understand if so happens we should upload the pictures again but It's not possible to do so because my upload limit has reached it's maximum.
Will it be necessary to upload the pictures again or you think it's possible to save them?

Best regards!

I have a problem with the queue again!
I have 2 photos which was updated 24/05/2012 and 2 photos which was updated 25/05/2012. They are still in queue...
Also I have 10 pictures in the queue. With them there is no problem.
Could you deal with this situation?

Current upload queue situation is 2012-05-26: 335 photos 303 photos not screened yet 32 photos currently in screening

Dear screeners,

I noticed today that one of my re-uploaded photos (Air Berlin OneWorld A330's taken in Curacao) has been deleted as I can't find it in my rejected overview nor in my accepted overview when going to my photographer's corner. I also see that my posts with the newly edited photo have been deleted in the thread I started about my initial rejection of the photo concerned. Can you check this and let me know what happened?

If everyone could please take the time to read over the key updates in replies 85 and especially 97 before posting, you will likely find your questions addressed there. We do not need to know your personal status if it relates to any of the following known problems:

- We know some images added to the db from the 24th-27th are missing.
- We know images uploaded from the 14th-19th went missing from the queue. As stated above, they are gone, you can re-upload them.
- We know some images uploaded around the 24th-25th are missing from the queue. These are likely lost as well, but will update when that is confirmed.
- We know some are still experiencing issues with their personal upload limit. This will likely be rectified when the lost db images are restored.

Checking my Queue status is like opening a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get.

One time, I have 10 rejects, and 10 uploads (not the same). Come back 2 hrs later and it's 6 and 6. Sometimes, it's 6 rejects, 6 uploads, and can't upload anymore because the queue is maxed at 10 (huh?). For a while (i.e.; several days), it looked like 4 had disappeared altogether, and judging from the posts her, an time-frame, I figured that's what happened. So I went ahead and uploaded them again. Now I don't know if I have 4 duplicates waiting in line or not. I'll just wait before doing anything more.

Not complaining, or asking for a response here. I can see that there are some serious issues still happening, and patience is what needed right now. I feel for you screeners out there, this cannot be easy on you, and the backlog that you guys must have to deal with, I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Best of luck getting this resolved and staying sane.

Hi all,

I see a strange situation that I've not read at the thread. If it is, i'm so sorry, I didn't read all the posts of everyone, but I did with Dana posts.

When I go to the link of all my pictures (the one I received once a picture was accepted and another rejected, the one where I see all my accepted photographies) I see the next text:

Displaying photos 1 to 2 from a total of 2 matching your criteria ordered by

But I am able to see only one, the pic of Spanair's airbuses under the susnset (Photo ID: 2072713).

Should I upload again the US Airways pic? I don't have the Photo ID of this other one.
It should be restore authomatically? Because there is the reg that it should exist, I understand.

What to do?

Thanks.

An interesting anomaly...even after deleting photos that will not be screened from my queue and reuploading them...I still get a message (intermittently) that I'm over my limit, and will have to wait to upload more. When I check the queue, I still have spots available. Just wondering if this will ever get resolved or are we going to have ghost photos in our queue for extended period?

A random other bug I noticed (apologies if someone posted it already):

My total and average views seem to be oscillating a bit. I noticed it a few days ago, but couldn't catch it until tonight. These are two sequential copy/pastes, taken probably an hour apart:

1.) You currently have 305 photos in our database. The large version of all your photos have been viewed a total of 394,698 distinct times. On average, each photo of yours has been viewed 1,294 times.

2.) You currently have 305 photos in our database. The large version of all your photos have been viewed a total of 394,241 distinct times. On average, each photo of yours has been viewed 1,293 times.

Not exactly a high priority thing for me, but if it means the whole hit-counting system is currently out of whack....I know I've had a few accepted photos lately that seemed to get many more hits than I expected, especially when they haven't been added to many (if any) photo albums. Of course, that may just be changing trends.

Hi all,

We still await final resolution for the images previously accepted that disappeared from the db.

Important point:
- If you have images uploaded from the 23rd - 27h still in your queue, they will not be restored nor screened, so please delete and re-upload them. We are now screening images from the 29th, so if you have anything in your queue uploaded prior to that date, it is in effect a ghost image, and is only taking up space in your queue.

Again, any image other than one previously accepted into the database (for which you would have received an email) may be considered lost, and we ask that you please upload again. We have received several requests that images lost from the queue receive priority screening to be fair, but unfortunately as the images lost number in the thousands, this will not be possible. The developers offer their sincere apology for all the inconvenience this has caused.

Dana

Same here. Not a big deal, but I wanted to report it anyhow, just to show that it is not an isolated event.

My "total number of views" seems to jump up and down (not that I continuously check this, but I noticed it this morning, it was a lower number than yesterday when I last uploaded a shot).

Maybe this has been pointed out already, if you view photos via the "Of All Time / Top 3000" link from the front page, the listed photos show a different number of photo views than the actual photos themselves. I presume the "Of All Time / Top 3000" pages have retained the original number of photo views while the rest of the pages show the number of photo views after the reset? Don't know, only guessing from posts in this thread.

Cheers!

Yes. I have been monitoring the totals twice per day since June 6th, and they have varied up and down during that time. I also noticed that the total views shown in the Photographers Corner has been significantly different to the total shown under the list of Airliner.net photographers (although as of yesterday June 12th, the totals have matched).

My problem of the missing images appears to be solved, with the upload page and search page in sync with the same # of photos, but my excel database shows 1 less. Somehow I'm going to have to figure out how to compare 6,033 images with 6,032 rows and see if I did it or one is missing. That's going to be a daunting task.

Yes, happens here as well. I went to bed yesterday and had 2,752,000 views, this morning I checked the queue again and it dropped to 2,750,000 views again. The number in the photographers list matches and the 'live' numbers as well.

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...eady/v1337857327.0492d31_3994a.jpg

I tried to upload 2 new images at the time that 2 were accepted from the queue, but between the time I checked and tried to upload, the queue was again full due to these 2 images. A little later on, they were gone and I was able to upload one image. But as of this writing, they are back in the queue. I am currently limited to uploading 15 images into queue; However, as I write, the number of images in the queue shows 16.

I do not recall if these images were approved, rejected or never screened.

Was wondering if this is part of the issue described in the start of this thread, or a variation.

Would appreciate some feedback.

Thanks

Jehan

For everyone else, there have been no new problems recently. Some still have ghost images taking up space in their queue, but that can be resolved as mentioned in replies #127 and #137 above.

dlowwa, thank you very much for all your efforts towards everybody here in updating us all. I have my Air Berlin OneWorld A332 also appearing an disappearing again from my queue (this should be a ghost image?). It has been in the queue since the end of May. I understand that I should delete it and re-upload it again?

Apologies for bumping this topic, but I noticed that the Photo Views in my Photographer's Corner still seems to be jumping back and forth. Last time I looked at it, it was at 425,XXX. Now it's at 424,XXX.

I also feel like my newer shots have been registering more views than they're really getting. That's just by comparison to what I'm used to seeing with shots from prior to a couple months ago.

Thanks.

To add to that, there's a discrepancy between the view count between the photograher's cornere stats and the A.Net photographers page..

I've been seeing this at least the last two weeks. At first I thought it was caused by maybe getting the stats page from different caches on different PCs or mirror sites, but thinking about it, the site should be getting the stats from the server directly, not a cached page.

It's not a huge deal, but does lead to confusion and a lack of confidence in what the site is telling me.

Exactly. Just makes me wonder how accurate any of the stats are.

Even if they're not exactly accurate, they at least seemed consistent before, which for all intents and purposes is probably just as good.
