Hello all,

On 2 September I will be in Belgrade for the local airshow, and I'm now making plans for the days after that.

Can anyone update me on the photography situation in Budapest (BUD)? I understand that terminal T1 is now closed, and that high fences have been built here recently. However, there still seem to be some decent spots.

Odd as it may seem, I would love to catch on of the Brasilias of BASe, as I don't have an EMB-120 in my collection. Are there any specific tips for photographing them?

Much of the airport seems walkable from metro stops, do you agree or would I better get a car?

Thanks,

Peter

Hey Szabo, wow, thanks a lot! That was a lot of work for you.

I'll digest that and probably come back with some questions later.

You need ladder because of high fence at point: 3, 5, 9, 10 (only for take-off shot with backgroud) and at point 6 - but only for taxi shot in the apron.
Point 6 for landing shot perfect without ladder, like the other points.

You can reach by foot easily points: 6, 7, 8, 9. This working if rwy direction is 13.
But in LHBP the main direction is 31, most of the arrival use rwy 31R.

From point 6 (bus stop) to point 4 is 2,6 km walking. At 31 direction is better a car.

Today EMB-120 in LHBP:
LHBP-LHPP at 6:47
LHPP-LHBP at 18:30
In daytime flying charters to Zakynthos and Bourgas.

Well, I spent a few hours at the prime spot - 4, the hill - this afternoon. It's an awesome spotting point at exactly the right location - a shiny example for any airport. Well, not shiny - just a big heap of earth with a bench on top, but then that's just what we need. There are shady trees too, which is even better because it is rather hot in these parts right now.

Spots 1 and 4 ARE doable with public transport - the Volanbusz company runs a cheap and fast service from Kobanya-Kispest metro station to Vecses, Ullo and Monor. Get off/on at Telepi/Anna Utca for Spot 4 - it's maybe a 1.5 km walk. Walking haters note that the last couple of hundred metres need to be walked anyway. Also note that the path to the hill branches off to the right - straight ahead brings you to a little knoll that gives you barely enough elevation to shoot landing aircraft over the fence, and I mistook this for the hill at first.

Of course, a car gives more flexibility in getting around between spots, but I don't regret not renting one because the bad news is that regular traffic at BUD is of little interest to me - it's almost exclusively low cost and mainline European fare (although I saw a Tatarstan Tu-154 yesterday - and one of the Brasilias undergoing maintenance in a hangar). So I guess I'll spend tomorrow afternoon too in the beautiful city that is Budapest, and in a Turkish bath in particular.

Thanks for the help,

Peter

I spent last night at a small hotel on Telepi! You're right, it is very hot!

Ahh thanks for clearing that up, I saw it parked way over near the hangars and thought it wasn't a permanent fixture.

I flew out at 0840 on the Dniproavia flight to Kiev. Small world eh!

Small world indeed... I considered Kiev for this trip, but am hoppping on the train tomorrow for the small airshow in Hradec Kralove.
